??? Sorry Great Emperor, but I am pretty sure that Schem is talking about getting rid of heat waste on a real space ship. It might seem minor, but it really is a serious problem.

Schem, how is it exactly that heat can be transformed directly into electromagnetic radition? I am curious here and do not intend to come off as sarcastic. I do not have an engineering degree, but I understand enough of the basics to grasp new information quickly. I do, however, have a degree in military history (BA in history with my study focus being 20th century modern warfare).

Hmmm, maybe we could run beam weapon/engine heat sinks into a steam turbine system to make good use of that heat. This would be easy if the ship's power plant system is based on a nuclear reactor design. Still, that steam will have to have a good system for losing heat or the reactor will be pretty lame.

Hmmm, maybe we can use solar sails as both a supplemental means of propulsion as well as providing the huge surface area needed to give off heat.

solar sails have to be huge to get any sort of distinguishable acceleration, also they have to face some sort of photon emission source, third how do you get acceleration (or decceleration!) in inter-stellar gaps?

I dont think they are very useful. they also tear really easily.

Alright, I am going to nail a few things here because its obvious people do not understand what I am talking about.

First

.1 C which is a C fractional velocity is 1/10 the speed of Light.

Second

I never stated they would use energy shields, I stated they would have to use some type of sheild and what that shield would have to withstand in a standard solar system. That would include Particles traveling at or near the speed of Light (Radiation), cosmic dust, micrometorites, etc. You would almost have to have two or three types of shielding to do it, otherwise just moving at the velocities that they are talking about would either destroy the ship, or if it maanged to never strike a micrometorite or a non trival piece of dust the radiation from the particles slicing through the ship would kill the crew and destroy the electronics systems. But I never stated what type of shielding because that gets into a branch of physics I have not nor do I ever intent to study. The only reason I mentioned it was someone brought shields up in passing and I decided to chime in.
The only other way to deal with this is to put some large heavy and decidely unwieldy sort of physical shielding over the entirety of the ship. This material would have to be extremely dense, and in doing so you incraease the mass of the ship, which will reduce the acceleration and manueverability of the ship.

Third
I never mentioned heat disipation for the reason that that is one of the true bitches of dealing with space travel after protecting the crew and the ship itself. There are various ideas floating around out there but none of them are what you would call efficient. So for this reason I left it alone. Unless you consider dealing with waste heat management fun, and there have been a few space games that forced you to do it over the years, as well as games like the mech warrior series I assume there is some technology or field of science that we have not yet discovered that will allow energy disipation without massive radiators, coating the ship in ice and running pipes through it, or some other wild scheme.

As for the firing of the of a projectile from a space vessel moving at a .1C velocity I will go and speak with my physics professor about this, I may be making an assumption thats going to bite me on the ass, but thats why I am an engineering major and not a physics major. So until I can get a clarification I am going to leave this sleeping dog lie entirely.
