I dont find the combat to be very interesting. One thing may be that the ships doesnt have any obvius role to play. In Sword of the Stars, each ship (depending on which weapon you put on) had a very obvius role in the fleet. A giant dreadnaught with a lot of hull-mounted beams is better for taking out slow targets than fast small ones due to the long recharge time, sins almost only has the flak ship.
in Sins, all ships has about the same weapons, just a little more or less of them. and for me, I dont think the abilitys is very cool to use either since all of them can be on auto. I would rather have that some can and some cant be on auto (like in Warcraft 3, where only some of the spells could set on auto-cast) and since each combat ability has a pretty low cooldown time, its not mega important when you use them.
And in almost all 4X games you can outfit your ships as you like (new weapons, shield etc.) why not make a similar in sins, instead of the locked models you have now. I think it would grant more diversity among all the ships.
and also; the construction time for the ships is way to fast, a lost fleet should be a bigger loss than it is now.
