Played my first couple games after pre-ordering, so far I'm liking this a lot but I have one concern area.
The very short version: Am I going to have to micro or are my ships not using all their abilities a known AI issue?
The long version:
Many people playing RTS' love "micro" aka micromanagement. While I understand that and think it should matter in head-to-head games, I don't enjoy it and prefer to have my units fight unattended. I find myself sitting zoomed out to where the planets are icons and monitor the status of my fleets by hovering over the status icons. In this regard I see myself as the General, allocating resources to different campaigns and expecting my officers to see to the details.
I had a fairly large, balanced fleet consisting of mostly light frigates, a few anti-fighter flack frigates, a few missile frigates, and one each of the cruisers along with my starting battle cruiser.
When I engaged a similar sized but unbalanced fleet (no missile ships, no cruisers, just lots of light frigates and the battle cruiser) I noticed the health on my missile ships dropped as they concentrated fire. This caused concern because I had at least 2 ships in my fleet with repair abilities (command cruiser and the other cruiser had repair) and they apparently never bothered to use them. In a short amount of time they trashed all 3 of my missile frigates, then scratched up my anti-fighter ships before they were wiped out.
Am I going to be forced to baby-sit my battles, telling my ships to use shield restore, repair, etc. abilities to protect specialist crafts? I really don't like doing that, at least not against computer opponents. I understand that if I was playing against a human they might concentrate fire on my siege frigates, sacrificing the most effective combat tactic to eliminate my planet pounders to give them time to reinforce the planet.
It seems that the various repair type abilities should have a priority of using them on specialist crafts first. If I have 15 light frigates and 1 each anti-fighter, missile and siege, I would prefer any losses to come out of the light frigates first, protecting the specialist ships.
