Fleet supply capacity suddenly drops by approx 500 for no apparent reason

I don't think there are any other posts about this. Anyone else been getting some really big supply totals?

I was playing a game with three star systems. I got my fleet supply up to around 1200 I think just before starting into conquering the second star system.

All of a sudden I looked and saw my capacity was back down at around 700. My fleet continued to operate but I had to conquer half of that second star system to get my supply back up to match the size of my fleet.

I continued to conquer the second system - capacity got up to around 1400. Then it suddenly dropped back to around 900! I had to start building it up by conquering more planets again.

All the numbers mentioned are approximate. Unless you happen to be paying attention to the numbers I don't notice this straight away - the only other symptom is any ships you had queued up to build just don't get started.

Thats weird, and definitely worth a closer examination. Too bad the devs have yet to see fit to give us any kind of console tools to experiment with.

I had this same issue in my game. For me it was that the first planet I conquered in the second system became my new capital planet. It didn't happen when I moved on to the third system for whatever reason.

So just click on your old capital and relocate it there and your fleet supply will go back up.

To be more precise on this (I looked at the charts at the end of the game) it happened three times.

Before After
1 1028 714
2 1415 1126
3 1540 1224

I did try shifting my capital back. It did seem to increase the amount again, but I don't think it was the same amount.

I had this problem just happen to me. I took over half of a second system and I wanted to create a second capital planet there. Well to my dismay it MOVED the capital planet, yet the tool tip hints at being able to create a capital in each system (something about a tax bonus to planets in the system). After I realized it moved I noticed my fleet cap drop from around 800 to 453. Lucky I have a save right before I changed capitals that I can use to continue my game.

I would upload a before and after save game but I have no idea where the save games are located (nothing in My Games or the Sins folder).

Can those having this issue check to see if you still have a Capital Planet when the drop occurs?  We found a bug earlier where this happened and it was due to your Capital status disappearing suddenly.

Saves are at:

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

Yes, the initial beta 2 release allowed a capital in each system, but this was revised down to one per player max.

Given the... hefty drops for jumps, having 1 per system makes a lot of sense, IMO. And even if it didn't, it'd be nice if the tooltip didn't imply it was the case

Has anyone tried this in a system with more than say 30-40 planets, at some point the capital planet must have no effect on the farthest away planets...

Thank you for clearing it up for me. I know there are only a few days of beta 2 left (I should have preordered this game earlier cause it is freeken sweet even in beta).

I'll check my game latter on and post the two saved games I have.

Re Yarlen: I was thinking the dirrectory would be under StarDock Games just like GalCiv2 is.

Re lordkosc: I agree, 1 planet per system makes alot more sence, and as far as I can tell the culture does not spread between systems (might be wrong, this is my first multi-system game).

Ok, I think I figured it out. It all has to deal with Culture.
Example:
Before I move my capital I have a planet 3 jumps away from it. It is giveing -30% allegiance because of distance (-40% + 10% for max culture). So it is providing me with 42 of a possible 60 ship slots.

When I move my capital it is now 5 jumps away and has -75% allegiance with max culture. Only providing me with 15 ship slots now.

I think what I over looked (and maybe everyone else did) was that the allegiance modifier does not only affect taxes and metal/crystal income but also ship slots (something I dont remember being stated in the tutorial).

Alas no. Microsoft has mandated new locations where all game files are to reside and it's not in My Documents anymore.

The beta isn't ending, we just won't be admitting new testers after tomorrow (except via TGN). You can continue to play and report all you like.

It's your game, you should be able to put the save games where you want.


Not if you want to be able to use the 'Games for Windows' logo.

Some additional comments on this issue:

A. Homeplanets used to be bugged and would disappear prior to the July 11th patch which is the most likely explanation of the big drop. The easiest fix is to patch to the latest version via SDC.

B. Fleet capacity is affected by homeworlds (just confirming it). If you relocate your homeworld, it may result in a reduced fleet capacity. Be careful where you place it!

C. Save games can be compressed dramatically using a free zip or rar file. They should be more than small enough to be sent directly to support@ironcladgames.com via any email service. We don't compress them by default for a variety of reasons that are elaborated on in another post though we will likely do so once the beta is over.

D. We've fixed the misleading text that suggests you can have a homeworld per system. This used to be the case but we removed it because it was too powerful and very unbalancing (esp in multiplayer).

Thanks for the responses. I can see how it would be unbalanceing with the full bonus of a home planet in each system but I think that the way it is now is under balanced. I'm currently losing on average 75% of my resources with max culture.

It's not a big deal atm because I'm able to not have a constant loss of ships so my income just piles up until I take a new planet and I have to build everything, but if I was getting enemy fleets sent at me constantly and haveing to rebuild my ships constantly I could see the time where I would not be able to hold systems because if the loss of resources. Maybe you could be allowed to build a sup-capital in each system that would only give like 25%-50% of the bonus a homeworld would give.

And it was stupid of me to not think of ziping or raring the files.

Re kryo: Wow...I was happy enough with being able to play it for the 4 days I though I could play. That just makes my day.

I can understand why you guys want the "Games for Windows" logo, I just don't understand why Micro$oft changed the directory from My Games. My Games was so much easier to locate and *Made Sense*. Now the games have to be in a hidden folder that some users would not understand how to be able to see it.

Yeah, who knows. In Vista it's not that hard to locate, but in XP it's definitely not what you'd expect. I know part of the reason is to help secure the OS from malware. By only allowing programs to create new files in accepted directories, they can keep more of a handle on things. Plus, they want to keep people from sticking all their files (documents, music, etc.) into one directory to keep stuff more organized - that way the OS (Vista) can present it easier.
