No crashdump, but locks up my PC...

Hey Guys, been busy and haven't posted in awhile, but just loaded Stardock Central from scratch and downloaded Beta 2, and can't play now. Haven't had issues not being able to run the game before this, and if I did have a problem, a crashdump was created. This time around, I make it all the way to the main page to create a single player game and it locks up before I can click anything. All that happens is a stuck sound loop and the only way to break out of it is by pushing my PC's reset button. How should I troubleshoot this?

OK, I presume there's a way to add a switch to the shortcut to do this listed on the forum somewhere? I'll look for it.

System Specs?


A8N SLI
Athlon 64 4000+
2GB OCZ DDR400
Dual eVGA 6800GT's in SLI mode
X-Fi base model
lots of HDD space (nVidia RAID)
latest drivers, etc...

Played the game maxxed out fine all Beta 1...well, unless there are several hundred ships battling it out!

Therein lies the problem, I can't get to any of those features/options before the lock-up occurs!

Ah, I thought since you made it to the singleplayer game setup screen you could make it to the graphics screen.

In that case, you need to modify the user.setting file in one of the following directories:

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

You can open it with notepad and you want to change ISWINDOWED TRUE to ISWINDOWED FALSE.

Hmm, I think since beta 1 worked fine, it's not likely your computer (unless you've done something really weird to it since then) and beta 2 in 99.9% of all cases was more compatible. Therefore my first guess is that the download was corrupted somehow. I would start with the following steps.

1. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\fyst\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire (or the vista equivalent shown above).

2. Uninstall Sins.

3. Verify there is nothing left in the directory you installed Sins (likely C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\Sins of a Solar Empire) and delete anything you find.

4. Redownload Sins and reinstall from Stardock Central.

have you tried it with SLI turned off? Just a random shot it the dark...

OK...I know you're only supposed to do one fix at a time, but I upgraded to the lastest nvidia drivers (162.18) and reinstalled my X-Fi drivers (just in case) AND instead of installing SDC and SoaSE to my RAIDed drives, I just used the defaults. It all now works fine...What exactly is the fix...dunno! ooops!
