Fleet names assigned to quick buttons

This is something I haven't seen in other strategy game (at least that I can remember). Just a little something I think would help with immersion (which is already coming along nicely). When you assign groups of ships to a quick key (aka ctrl-1 - 0) each key (1-0) when pressed could correspond to a fleet title. These titles would be race specific, so for the TEC, since they were all about trade, pressing the 1 key would result in the response "Queen's Bounty awaiting orders commander."

I'm sure more inspiring names could be thought up. But I think it would be a nice touch, players could form emotional attachments to a certain fleet title and use it as their primary strike fleet, or prefer one that is appropriately named for a fleet that protects the home world. Its not a game of the year maker, but I think it would add a touch of personality.

IIRC Space Empires had that feature. I really liked having "The Grand Fleet" or "Home Guard", etc.

If it doesn't require too much programming, it would be a good bit of chrome.

Couldn't have. You could name fleets, sure, but not voice response.

Yup. Alas, thats not the feature he's requesting. He wants the groups to be pre-named, with a vocal response when you select them.

I doubt its going to happen.

One thing id like to see is a quick button that deselects any colony frigates in your selected fleet.

well, actually you could have a list of pre-defined fleet names that you choose from in the Option menu (Fleet #1: Home Guard, Fleet #2: Imperial Dominator, bla...). So when assigning Ctrl-1 to a fleet, it takes that pre-determined name (and voice).

i'd just like to be able to rename ships and fleets. Just the Text would do.
It would be funny to see your friends custom named fleet enter the area.

The "7th Heavy" have arrived to assist the fight for instance

But then again I also want a little more flexability with badges and paintjobs.
It just adds so much class and longevity to a game like this.

I dont think it is a very complex thing for them to do. What is it really? Just an audio trigger linked to a sound file. I think it would rock and add to the immersion element. It would be no different then when a ship is created and you hear a comment from the captain of the ship. The group/fleet audio cue coupled with user names being easily modded would add some real value to the title to be sure.

Complex, no. Time consuming and costly, yes. Need to hire voice actors, studio time, edit, touch up the sounds, etc etc..

Maybe; but it need not be so. Surely the programmers have a mic and want a little immortality or they can hack current sounds together or even use some from other titles they produced. There are lots of low cost options. Even Microsoft Sam could do. They could even hold a contest within the community for it. Creativity would be the key to a cost efficient production. Shoot, worse case situation just add the functionality and let us "modmen of sin" do it.

DoW army painter FTW speeky fleets may add immersion but i think i would prefer fleets that you can name anything you want (which is what i think they may be doing) and if it would cost more money/take more time then i dont want it!

its confirmed you can name ships, this from Blair in another thread

"Already implemented. We are naming our planets and capitalships in our current internal version so you will be able to do it when Sins ships in February"

Now all we need is a better fleet painting\badging system and were set for a long time.
