"friday five" ... island of lost souls

This week, we are about to be stranded on a deserted tropical island !. Oh no !.

(Thanks Sabrina for another great idea).

For the purposes of the exercise, (ie: to get at what we each really 'can't live without'), we will assume that the island has 'the basics' by way of plant life (including fruit trees), animal life, and adequate water.

What 5 items/things would you take with you, and why ?.

I would take my bible, to read it and maintain my hope.

I would take one of those handcrank radio/flashlight thingies...I'm sure that the radio wouldn't do me any good out there, but I'd appreciate a flashlight that didn't need batteries for those nighttimes.

Duct tape. Definitely duct tape. The answer's in the question.

1. My husband
2. Lot of pictures of my kids (but NOT my kids cause I don't want them stranded without the hope of a wonderful future)
3. Computer w/ High Speed Internet Access (gotta download plans for a cabana and assorted fruit recipes plus keep in touch with my kids)
4. A massive supply of toiletries (moisturizer, sunscreen, tylenol, hairbrushes, nail polish, soap, bug spray blah blah blah)
5. A king sized bed with lots of feather pillows!

This is of course if we aren't even attempting to "escape." The list would be vastly different if we were launching a self-rescue mission.

An etcha-sketch - so i could write a novel, erasing each page (and disappointment) as i go.

A Latin dictionary that includes grammar instruction - how long could it take to master Latin on a deserted island...i mean...really?

A binded folder containing transcripts of each and every Simpsons episode in lieu of a funny person - laughter as a talisman against eventual psychosis

Is a dog allowed? If so, a dog - do i really have to explain myself?

If the island has surf, a bodyboard - a way to spend hours doing nothing and enjoying it. in lieu of drugs or alcohol, both of which would ultimately run out.

(I'm going with the assumption that we're not going to be rescued, or find a way off the island. Otherwise I would just say that I would bring a boat instead of all the fancy stuff to build a way to get off, or radios to get help with. We're stuck on this island... period)

Yeah, that's probably a much more interesting assumption.

1) wife and child, if I'm not allowed to assume them. Hoyle's complete guide to games, if I am.
2) an extremely thorough "how things work" guide that covers all the basics of things like sanitation, shelter, fire-starting, etc.
3) a Zippo lighter and a whole lotta fuel for it, 'cuz I'm lazy.
4) 100 decks of cards.
5) I'll agree with Splateaux (except on spelling

1. I would take my glasses or a lifetime supply of contacts and neccesities. (I know, boring!)
2. Lifetime supply of toiletries, forget clothes, I'll do without!
3. My boyfriend, but not my kids, I would want them to live a "normal" life. I'd leave them with my parents.
4. Some sort of knives and a way to sharpen them, I suppose.....
5. Lots and lots of rum.

1) Assuming we can bring family (everyone else is!), my husband and precious boys
2) chocolate (many, many bags)
3) paper, pens, crayons
4) sunscreen (the boys and I burn easily)
5) camera/film to capture all the adorable things the boys (and my husband) do

yep, splateaux and citahellion, this was first on my list too. you'd need it for building shelter, hunting, fishing, cleaning fish, cutting fruit, the list is endless.

I'm a little slow this week as the computer was mercilessly ripped from me while my sister went to NYC. It is so good to see that you're back. Now I'm going to have to read your whole backlog of articles... why must you write so much???

Anyway... 5 things.

1) A solar powered iPod loaded with as many songs as it could fit.

2)A really thick writing book and pens (can I count this as one?)

3) My guitar

4) A tent

5) A sex slave (or perhaps just a really close friend who I could occasionally have sex with. Oh dear - that means I need condoms as well. Damn it! Maybe I can fashion them from animal intestines like in the old days?)

Good questions. I do get the feeling I will starve however, as I have no knife. Nor do I have any tools. Oh well - I will die surrounded by beautiful music which is fine by me!
