Help! TEC Fleet composition

Hey!

I'm pretty new to this game, so far I've played 5 games online and had my rear end handed to me all 5 times.

I have the hang of the economy and the land grab phase of the game, usually I am leading in terms of economy but my fleet size is either equal or trails behind my opponents.

So question, do you guys do both military research and civil research at the same time or just one or the other.  And, what fleet compositions do you aim for.

I was going for an Akkan + LRMs + carriers + heavy cruisers but that got owned by those bubble ships....

Bubble ships? Granted the Vasari are voiced by Cobra, but they don't have any trouble bubbles

Well I haven't been able to find a good start off with TEC. For Advent and Vasari I usually go with two Eco buildings so I can research Lava and Ice colonization and some faster metal and crystal rate. After that it depends on what my enemy is doing but its usually to get a good military going. For games with only 1 star (is all i play) you don't want to try and rush to heavy cruisers to fast. You will end up getting owned early. Build in stages mixing Eco and Military depending on your surroundings. The Vasari are greater military wise then TEC so you wont win with brute strength

The flipside of that is that since TEC start off weaker, shot for shot, you could also interpret this to mean they need a good kick upwards pretty soon. In single player you will often get enough time to build 2 civil labs and colonise a volcanic and an Ice planet and develop them before anyone really comes knocking in any great strength. In multiplayer it is suicide to start off that way, you want 2 military labs up as soon as you can possibly afford it, someone will be after you in limited numbers by 30 minutes and significant strength by 50 mins to an hour. Building military bases first off will allow you more unit types early on and allow you to take down pirates fast and expand rapidly. There is nothing stopping you bypassing a volcanic or ice planet to get to an asteroid/desert/terran world one jump further away, pirates in those systems will often struggle to take out even an unescorted colony ship if it doesn't hang around. Just make sure to kill off the pirates before you start moving trade through there.

You want something to kill Siege frigates with (flak is good), kill them, colonise the planet with your colonising cap ship and then look to moving out as quickly as possible. If you keep one military ship in the freshly colonised system the pirates will attack it rather than going after your constructors - so leave one ship there, and as you build your fleet up, bring your new ships in from home and make a stopoff to take out the remaining pirates. You end up a little shortchanged on XP for your capship this way, but there will usually be enough fighting to build it up a few levels anyhow.

actually the advent have the weakest first frigate. it goes Vasari > Tec > Advent

I can't tell for sure but it sounds like your aiming for heavy cruisers to early into the game, and if your doing that your probably being to research heavy early on. you should build cobalts first to help clear worlds then move on to lrms and hoshikos before jumping to kodiaks.

The main factor in determining what you do is the map size and how many jumps between your home world and the enemy home world are. if you are decently spaced always go with 2 civic labs first and grab early trade and research volcanic or ice colonization as needed. after you start getting trade up then move onto military. However if you see the enemy beelining straight to you, you'll probably have to switch things up and go for military sooner rather than later.

When it comes to fleet composition the most important thing is to watch what your enemy is doing and what his fleet is made of. there is no point in going lrm's and carriers if your opponent is going mostly with flaks. flaks just rip apart not only fighters and bombers but LRMs/illuminators/and assailants. if flaks aren't and issue i would recommed keeping what ever cobalts are alive and building lrms and hoshikos i would suggest always have hoshikos in a 1 to 3 ratio to lrms(somtimes even 1/2 the number of your main offensive unit, if its kodiaks 1 to 1 and be devastating).

I have had no experience playing online yet since I am just getting the hang of the game. I usually try to build a cap ship ASAP and some basic frigates to go with it. I also spend resources fortifying my home planet (guns and fighters). After that I focus on reaserch a bit (I always make sure to unlock probe for the scounts before even bothering to make any). Then I get the planets close to me for their resources. But maybe its different online.

I always thought the Kortul Devastator sounds like Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean.
