Hello everyone...

I am relatively new to forum life  and as such I am unfamiliar with the 'karma' rating next to people's names. I see that most people rank 0, whereas others range up to 9 (I haven't yet seen higher than this).

I would like to the following: what is the point of this rating, how it is assigned and who assigns it? How does it help you in a forum environment? I assume it is subjectively assigned by an individual or individuals?

I know its a random question, but I don't like seeing stuff I don't quite understand

Take care!

The simple answer is that it is a way to rate other people (only positive it appears). You can give someone a karma point by clicking the "thumbs up" button.

Yes, it's a relatively new feature, that should promote users in helping more, as people would (presumably) award the posters that help them. It's a neat idea, and should bring the forum-ers closer together That or a karma war will break out!

It's fascinating that it doesn't actually track across all Stardock forums. So if you get +1 here, only the GalCiv2 denizens see it.

I know. I have mad über-Karma at JoeUser but nothing over here.

For those who want more info, read this post from the man Zoomba himself.

The karma display is of course in every forum, but the actual Karma displayed (the number) appears to be board-specific.

Yes, if you notice there are threads that are common all across the forums and people can read them from any forum.

But the funny thing is I can be looking at it at JoeUser and I have all my Karma, but if I'm looking at the same article at WinCustomize, nothing.

I know there's a good reason behind it, but I think it's hilarious.

It's to somehow differentiate the communities. Why would someone who regularly blogs at JoeUser and might not know Galciv (hey, it might happen) need to see a karma for "Helping explain the intricacies of the Thalan tech tree"? He would be confused.

Similarly, someone in Galciv community who doesn't know Joeuser might get excited at the thought of "Middle East policies explanation": "Hey I didn't know this feature was in!? Where do I find it?"

All of course in my humble opinion.

I believe the 'report' button issues negative karma. I have also seen certain folks running in the red.

That is indeed a bit strange.

User access levels are per-site, so it makes sense that karma is too.

Does that means this forum will actually use the forum ranking? I remember it was brought up a long time ago but I think Zoomy said the ranks weren't useful here since there was nothing created that's rank-specific.

Better do your best not to get 100 karma points then...

There are ranks, but they're not displayed any more (don't know if they'll return), they're issued only by admins, and of all the game sites only GC2 has anything special for those above regular users but below moderators. You can see someone's access level on their profile though, IIRC.

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. Zoomba's post on JoeUser said that higher ranked posters can add more than one karma point, which I guess implied that the ranks were going to matter for forums other than GalCiv.
