Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, and other great science fiction.
How I came to love aliens
I am just wondering how many people who are into science fiction got introduced to it by reading the original masters, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.
You don’t hear much about them anymore. I know it has been some 140 years ago that Verne was in his apex, and about 100 for Wells but they are the ones who started this whole genera.
The very first novel I read was
From The Earth to the Moon I was about nine years old when I read it. I became an instant fan of science fiction. As I was reading it for the first time, I was amazed at how he knew so much about the space program. Imagine my surprise when I found out he wrote the book almost a million years before we had landed on the moon!
I should mention that it was 1970 when I read the book, back then all nine year olds knew everything about the space program & yes we really did drink our Tang. The stuff tasted awful but if Neal Armstrong, Mike Collins, Buzz Aldren, Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise drank it then I was going to as well! (I have no clue if any of them ever actually drank the stuff).
I dreamed of someday going to the moon and living there... We would be able to buy houses there by the time I was twenty so I wanted to start saving my money now!
I then fell in love with Star Trek which was in reruns at the time. My love affair with science fiction has grown over the years and it was all due to reading that one book, which I should mention was one of the last ones sitting on the book rack in class cause everyone else had already grabbed up the “cool books” to read.
So everyone, how did you get introduced to science fiction?
I would really like to hear from Brad Wardell , the Frazer Bros and everyone who was involved in the creation of sins on this one.
