I think everyone here is missing one point. Drumroll.
It's a game
As such, it's supposed to be entertaining. Now FFAs or 1v1s or etc are entertaining, but playing with people who you know and play with often adds a new element to the game that's even more fun: Team management. No longer is it about getting XYZ unit out super fast to win the game, but now it's about helping your buds and accomplishing cool things in the process.
This is why I formed DT, and that's why it's a small clan. I talk some crap but in a playful manner. What reasonable adult would really talk about whiping out a list of other people and raping their women etc etc (other than siddy). It's kinda roleplay too, just to spice things up and make things a little more ENTERTAINING for all involved.
Now some people don't like other people. This happens in the real world, and especially in games over the internet. The sad truth of the matter is that everyone wont always get along, but I'm getting slightly irritated with 9-5 nerds who spend all day on the internet talking a bunch of shit. I'm in the Marines, and have a job. HowDu is in the Navy, Tyr222 is in the Air Force, etc. San Tsu also has a military background. We all have work, and don't have time to cherry pick games all day long. That means that sometimes we have to be less polite than I'd prefer.
For example, you have 1:30 to play with your buds, and that's about ten minutes longer than a game usually takes you all. So you want to get a good game started relatively quickly. You make a title like "No Noobs" or "Experts Only", and then some new guy joins about 40 times trying to ask why you're booting him. Well buddy, it's because relatively speaking you suck, and we'd rather not waste your time or ours with a game that is over before it starts. That leads to 80% of the hostility towards DT.
The other twenty percent is everyone loves to fling internet shit to some degree, some more than others. So being a relatively well known clan on a relatively small multiplayer game, we attract most of the shit. It doesn't matter what the mature adults in our clan will say here on the forums, other less mature people will still come in and say "Well he said I suck, and even though I've had 20 good encounters with DT, that one leads me to believe that all of DT are full of assholes". Well sorry 12 yr old jonny, I don't have all day to explain the stresses of actually having a job and bills to pay, so I can't explain to you why I don't have the patience to put up with your rude bullshit on ICO for 20 mins while I'm trying to get a game started.
