Solution Requested - Video File Conversion Software

I have a JVC HDD camcorder which is a terrific little machine.  Only it's output is in JVC's proprietary .mod format and the bundled software has no conversion utility.  I'm looking for a program (preferably free, but not mandatory) that will convert .mod files to other standard formats that can be played on computers or iPod/iPhone or uploaded to YouTube.

I've Googled & found a few, but this is a very tech-savvy group & I figure someone here will know what's good, bad & ugly.

It isn't free, but it does support .mod files.

My son has the same. The answer is so simple....I felt really stupid after spending 3 hours looking for good conversion software...

 

The .mod format is mpeg2 all you need to do is change the extension to mpg.........I dont know if that works on an ipod but it does on youtube

Thanks very much ID - the bundled software is also from Cyberlink but is obviously a couple of generations older & intentionally crippled.

Lantec - That's too rich.  I'll give it a try.  'Preciate it.

Still looking for a way to convert to .m4v that's not too expensive, though.  AVS4U has a 'free' converter, as long as you don't mind the app putting a watermark in the middle of your video.  They use a 'subscription' revenue model which will eliminate the watermark after you register, but it's an annual fee.  That model is fine for ODNT but not sure it makes sense for this type of software.

Not sure if this is what you need but I use Super from eRightSoft. One of the best converters i have used and it is free to boot!

 

If LanTec is correct on changing the extension then I am sure Super can convert it to your needs.

Lantec -

I changed the extension of a test file to .mpg & the video plays in WMP9 but there's no audio & the aspect ratio is wrong (16:9 native, 4:3 playback).

Here's one i found in a google search.

Quicktime converter. $29.00 for the full version and they have a trial version that limits you to converting half of your video.

Here's one that has a free version and converts just about any video format into DVD, AVI, MPEG, etc, etc.  There are no restictions with the freeware version, just a purchase screen after you've done converting files, but it's not a problem and does not hinder user operations.  The Pro version is USD$29.95, which has more conversion options/formats and I will now purchase after using the free version and finding it to work well.

Diawa, I use the The KMPlayer and have no anomolies. It may be that the mpeg2 codec used by wmp9 is at fault.
