Multiple Stars Graphics Mod v0.3 [Updated 2/15/11]

[Vanilla Sins v1.191+, Entrenchment v1.051+, Diplomacy v1.011+]

-DESCRIPTION:
This graphics mod simply removes the spiral galaxy animation which appears when zoomed out on multiple star maps. It replaces the animation with a single solitary star. This is not only more realistic, but it is also reduces the load on system resources when playing maps which contain many star systems. More than that however, it eliminates the 'glowing white globs of death' that can occur on maps with over fifteen star systems. Also included is a reduction in generic planet icons when zoomed out which saves screen space when many star systems are present. Since this is a graphics mod it will not affect multi-player matches. Everything will work fine and there will not be any problems.

-HOW TO INSTALL:
DO NOT OVERWRITE FILES.
Delete any older versions of the mod.
Copy the extracted 'Multiple Stars Graphics Mod v0.3' folder into the

C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Mods-Diplomacy v1.xxx\ directory.

To enable once in game, go to options->Mods->Select MSG Mod-> Press enable.

-CREDITS:
This mod is free to use and incorporate into other mod projects as long as proper credit is given to it's compiler boshimi336.

Looks great!

Here's a way to use it as a regular mod: Create the folders and put the three files like the picture shows. The path to the mod folder should be known by now

There has to be no .manifest file in the mods main folder.

Here's how it looks in game:

Nice, that spiral galaxy thing always annoyed me too!

I'm going to include your DDS updates in Requiem going forward - with creds of course!

Alright, i've run into a little issue and with torn cartilage in my right hand, it's very hard to sit at a computer and tinker with stuff all day inbetween my job and medication.

What i'm asking 'somebody', anybody, out in the community, is for help.

I have discovered an issue where, whichever system you own a planet in, the star dissapears when zoomed all the way out. I would like to believe this is not a hard wired issue with the game. If this situation can be resolved, this mod will essentially be fully complete.

When a player is running  15 plus star custom map, or even just a 6 star map, being able to see which star your planets are currently around is important, especially so you do not get diorientated. Most importantly however, not being able to see your star when you zoom out (becuse it dissapears and only leaves planet icons), is just plain not cool.

Is there anyone out there that is willing to help do some digging into this issue?

Looks like a great mod! Is this compatible with all mods?

That Spiral thing makes it harder to see, as well. Always has annoyed me.

This mod is compatible with all mods currently released.

However, as I mention above. I am in a serious need of assistance due to a lack of time, and ability (torn cartilage in my wrists). I'm seeing a specialist tommarow but it's just too painful to do much on the computer at the moment. Kind of a bummer.

Looks cool. i got annoyed as well because of the galaxy icon thing. mainly because im into astronomy and wanted them to get it right. i mean a solar system isnt a galaxy for crying out loud. and i dont see how a star could have like 30 planets obiting it! our solar system only has eight. so i make a lot of multiple star maps and it does start getting slow after a while.

Either way, get well soon.

I think I know why the stars 'disappear' when zooming out, and you own stuff in them.

The planets are represented by colored dots in a system you've explored; so by zooming out you can still tell the extent of an empire's domains. Because of this, the planets are just covering up the stars.

Hmmm, I will look into this. I'm back at college again so I should have a little bit of time.

Whiskey, have you messed around with the planet's marker's graphics files at all? Possibly making the star's zoomed out graphics bigger ... or something?

Would you mind poking around with the files at all?

Whiskey, I have looked into it and I think what you were talking about is only applicable if you are zoomed all the way out and the planet icons clump together? When you zoom in and the planet icons disperse a bit you still cannot see the central star animation.

I am still at a loss and in need a a lot of help with this issue. *sigh* Is anybody out there?

boshimi336, with my version of your mod, I do not have this problem, but I just copied the black_da.dds to the spiral*.dds in a mod, and have zoomed out to entire galaxy view, and the stars do drift behind the planets, but that is the only issue

I know, ancient bump here.  But I was excited to stumble upon this mod cuz I just hate the galaxy animation.  zooming out shows a giant white blob; the stars are simply not visible.

I've tried enabling this mod for my sins 1.91 several times in the last 45 minutes but it just doesn't seem to do anything.  I can get the mod Enabled, but when I load up a multi-star map and zoom out; the giant white clouds are still there.

Keeping my fingers crossed.  I recently started playing vanilla sins again because I think space stations trivialize playing against the AI.

/edit, it looks like there are nine other galaxyspiral*.dds files; one for orange, green, and red.  I assume changing these to solid black would do the trick?  Unfortunately I do not have the ability to modify dds files; I just tried using paint.net but it didn't seem to have any effect in game.

all you have to do is copy the black.dds to the galaxyspiral*.dds files which is what both boshimi AND myself have done, But some time in the future ironclad MIGHT release another patch that MIGHT have a REAL fix for this issue, at least that is what I have read in the various threads in this forum

OMG I am super excited to use that tutorial.  Can't wait to get home and make these mods and be able to zoom out and see something that looks so amazing.   You folks are brilliant!

/edit. I love the smaller planet icon size too; are these available for download or do I need to find some way of doing the mods myself?

spent about an hour and a half on this so far .  Can't I just have your icons_planets.dds pahlease.  Also, I like how the screenshot shows the stars the same size; I can't seem to get that; I know there are 3 different size stars in icon_planets.dds, though.

/another edit.

Ah i figured out that the star radius as well as the distance planets are from each star have a direct effect on how the stars are rendered when zoomed out.  How bizarre.  If I set the star radius very small (20) and have the planets at a distance of 7 from the stars; then both render beautifully when zoomed out.  However, if I set the star radius to 100 or set the planet distance from star to 50; then when zooming out the stars look like little dots.

At any rate, it looks beautifull now; and I can't wait to play my next multi star map.

I've changed this so that by default, planets don't show up in this view. You can hover over a star to see the small planet icons or hold down ALT to see all of them. It will be included in the upcoming Diplomacy patch.

Nice work. I have not tried the beta patch. Do I need to revise my spiral-galaxy-fix tutorial at all? From what I understand all they did was hide the planets unless you mouse over or ALT key.

That's about right. It is a significant update in my opinion as it makes playing multiple star maps so much quicker and more efficient. I'm surprised they didn't have this feature in the game earlier. It's so much cleaner and crisper!
