Hello,
I've been trying sins with the nvidia 3d vision glasses and wanted to give some feedback on how the 3d effect goes with sins. I dont know if there is much interrest in these on ironclad / stardock part but still, the goal of this post is to tell the issues with 3d glasses in sins for the devloppers to see and is also for those who wanted to know if 3d glasses would be worth it with sins.
So far the 3d effects are quite stunning with the game. The best results I had was with going in cinematic mode and turning off the background graphics (leaving only the stars). This gives stunning results but there is one issue that makes playing the game difficult. It is with the usual incorrect depth on the 3d objects vs gui 2d icons attached to them. This is usualy an issue with pretty much evry game where the interface comes out in front and the 3d is on the back. On most of the games, this is not too problematic but in sins, it makes focusing on an object too difficult when the icons are on. I'm not quite sure how this can be fixed by the devlopper.
One side effect of this is when you zoom compleatly out and evrything is mostly 2d (you only see icons mostly). The stars in the background are almost at maximum depth and the interface is still on the front, this gives some increadibly awesome feeling as the game world seems so small vs the thousands of stars far away in the background. However, since the planets are now 2d, there is no longer any depth so you cant tell which planet is closer to the other. (its like when you start a game, close your eyes and zoom out. Once zoomed out, open your eyes and look at the starmap and figure out which planet is closer without moving the view around to get a good persperctive. You wont be able to figure it out but if depth could be applied somehow on the interface icons, then with the glasses, one could figure out how the planets are without even needing to change the angle of view, since the planets would naturally look farther back in the screen. There is a small "faked depth" effect on the interface in a way that if you lineup the planets, the closest planet will be on top but that doesnt translate into depth on the 3d glasses.).
So far, i've seen one game that managed to get some 3d out of 2d interface so I am sure that this can be done but I think it requires the devlopper to take it into account rather than letting directx and the drivers do the work.
So, im glad that this game's engine has good support for 3d glasses and issues would have been almost null should the usual interface issue wouldnt have been such a problem, it gets defenatly in the way. If someone was wondering if 3d would be nice in sins, well in cinematic mode, its awesome but you cant really play very well in that mode so 3d glasses with sins is a no go I would say.
I hope this was useful for those interrested! Feel free to add more or if you have question, dont hesitate to ask!
Cheers!
