Winning Conditions

One thing that bugs me in Diplomacy is that, although the game is built around building allies, in free for all, you can't finish with your allies.  Perhaps I'm ignorant and am un aware of some option that allows people to win together.  If so, please enlighten me.

 

It was this one situation where me and this guys team up and win.  Until our close (17-ish relationship points) relationship had to be torn apart, for there could only be one.  Bugged me.

But isnt the diplomatic victory, who has the best relation at the end?  I heard a guy say (during setup) that with that setting on, everyone lost this one time he played.

Ryat is talking about the number of allied victors setting. If it's set to no allied victory, only you alone can win. You can set it to any number of maximum players, however. So if you set it to 3, then you can win with 2 AI allies, and so on.

wait, does it HAVE to be 3 allies (if set to 3) or a max of 3

A max of 3, can be any number lower. If it doesn't work like that currently, then it's a bug.

Would someone please explain how "allied victory" settings work? The manual doesn't mention it. Thanks in advance

allied victory means a victory with allies,

so, if you are allied with 2 others, and the allied victory is set to 3 then you and your 2 allies win, when set to 2 then i think the 2 strongest of the allience win... or maybe they declare war... im unsure about that point,

but with no allied victory you will either loose or win by yourself

So does this mean with an Allied Victory set to 2, you can only win if you have two allies MAXIMUM?  What if I wanted to ally with a third faction?  Would the game prohibit me from doing so?
