Flak frigates

So after about half a year without playing sins (took it back up recently), I have to ask, what is the communites opinon of flak frigates? I dunno, they just don't seem to be worth it, frankly they suck at their main role.

 

At least this is my opinion. What about everyone else?

Flak frigates are inexpensive and have incredible amounts of health, plus they can fire in all directions.  Not that much for damage dealing, but all around a good frigate type.  Flaks are actually fairly decent against LRF, so it's not like they're only good for swatting strike craft.

Unfortunately, to be effective, you need at minimum 1 Flak for each fighter squad, and you have to outnumber bombers to get any real effect at all.  Best bet with Flak is to back them up with Fighters of your own, and any anti-strikecraft abilities you have on your fleet/structures.  They won't cut it on their own without frightening numbers, but with the proper backup, your skies will be clean in no time.

If you're trying to use them against bombers, yeah, they suck. They absolutely destroy fighters, though. You'll need about 1 flack for every 1-2 fighter squads, but that will totally destroy the fighter squads; they won't hardly be able to launch. And the flack can still do other stuff while the carriers are useless.

You really do not even need a 1 flak to 1 fighter to clear fighters out.  Granted it will be quicker if you use 1 to 1 but even a half dozen or so will keep them reasonably suppressed.  Bombers are another matter however as has been mentioned.  Flak are terrible clearing them.  As has been mentioned they can be good against lrf in bulk.

oh yes, flack beat LRM and (the now rarely seen) scout spam.

flacks are what make a fleet of aprox equeal numbers of flack and LRMs so annoying... cause you just plain dang cant counter in untill tier 5. 

fighters? screwed.

LFs? screwed.

LRMS? screwed.

flack.. ya, that works... but it soo easy to counter...

bombers? only if you like 50% damage multipliers, and your carriers actually have antimatter...

scouts? lulz.

support cruisers? only at tiers at which you can already afford HCs...

that said though...  HCs+ a few support cruisers will wreck a flack/lrm fleet.
