Dawn of Victory is a modification currently in development for the RTS/4X game; Sins of a Solar Empire. It is a “total conversion” replacing the games original models, textures, UI elements, and gameplay to create an entirely new and original experience.

It is our goal with Dawn of Victory to “maintain depth, but shift focus”, taking the things that made Sins of a Solar Empire a truly enjoyable game, and apply them to a different set of rules.

Above all, the team behind Dawn of Victory is committed to only releasing a product we can be proud of. While we pride ourselves on the quality of our art assets and aesthetics changes, we hope the true value of our mod is the unique and engaging gameplay.

Image Image Image

The storyline behind Dawn of Victory was originally little more than an excuse to create what we thought would be a unique and fantastic backdrop for the game. Loosely based on the “WorldWar” series of books by Harry Turtledove, we wanted to take the atmosphere that made World War II games so compelling, and transport it into a space opera setting.

Over time however, our backstory has grown into an expansive universe, spanning over 300 years of alternate history. Our community driven wiki, dedicated to the story behind the mod has grown to over 500 pages, with hundreds of individual contributors.

  • New Ship Classes: Corvettes, interceptors, and more.
  • Redesigned Combat Model: Small caliber weapons may be effective against strike craft and frigates, but against heavy armor they won't make a dent.
  • Original Art Assets: Different factions have unique architectural styles and approaches to ship design. All assets have been created expressly for the mod.
  • Enhanced Ship Customization: Mount different equipment on your ships to achieve greater tactical flexibility.
  • New Doctrine Trees: Specialize your faction's approach to combat and more through purchasing unique abilities and bonuses.
  • Redesigned User Interface: The game's interface has been reimagined to fit both the style and gameplay changes inherent to Dawn of Victory.

The Soviet Union relies on overwhelming firepower rather than subtlety to achieve victory. Soviet frigates and cruisers are well rounded and cost effective, but the true strength of the Red Fleet lies in its capital ships. The Soviet economy is vulnerable however, and must be protected until it is in a position to dominate.
Image
Kriegsmarine corvettes and frigates are the mainstay of German strategy. When properly deployed they can harass and intercept enemy units before escaping serious retribution. By denying their opponents the room to expand, the Greater German Reich can force their enemies into a vulnerable position before delivering the final blow with cruisers and capital ships.
Image

The Democratic Federation combines the best elements of the American, Andrean, British and French fleets. Large numbers of specialized ships are available, and when properly coordinated, become effective against nearly every threat.

Applicants would ideally be familiar with UV mapping, and be proficient at recognizing existing unit styles and applying them faithfully either from a concept or working with a group to come up with a design. Models typically range from 1k to 6k polies. Each unit mesh will have only only one UV channel, as the engine limits us to one texture per mesh.
Image

Applicants should be familiar with normal and specular maps and have a commitment to detail. The art direction of the mod calls for mostly realistic texturing with some room for stylistic exaggerations; experience with generating "greeble" and weathering are a must. Texture resolutions range from 1024 square to 4096 square.

Quoting Sinperium,
My reason for (initially) posting was hoping to hear something about the progress or activity of the mod.  I understand Swiss's desire to maintain this thread with decorum and his mod is "his mod" he can tease, release, lie or trash it as he wants.  If he doesn't see it as part of "the community" he shouldn't post in the community forum without expecting varying reactions.

I personally would actually like to hear what the plans are now that Rebellion's out and wanted to know is this still active and being worked on in light of that?

We have already heard that all other modders suck (except for one) and the forums suck--so I'm not very optimistic about hearing anything pleasant.

And I'd really like it if the discussion in this thread was at a level slightly above god damn reddit, but that doesn't look likely. At least those people have the excuse of being 13 years old.

Quoting harpo99999,
obviously the bats live in the swiss or night wings of manor houses, as well as caves.

harpo

Quoting SpardaSon21,
I thought bats lived under the south-east wings of manor houses.

This is among the dumbest shit I've read, read that aloud and explain to me how you people are not embarrassed by your vapid shit as much as I am.

Actually I don't really give a shit, I just never let an opportunity to make fun of you tremendous idiots slip me by.

Doesn't seem anything has changed, they're taking their own pace, and encouraging people to get trinity because they're still doing it in original Sins. Poor fools...

i guess if you make all your potential ufo/TEC reskin/stargate atlantis mod players buy a $40 standalone expansion pack to a game they already own 98% of the content of you get to have a superiority complex on the esteemed Sins Forums???? i guess if your priorities are being technically competent and/or saving people from spending more than $10 on a Badgame this isn't an issue but if they're primarily endlessly circlejerking about modding tier lists (no items, no optimization, 2GB only, final destination only) and Say A Joke Thing About The Poster Above You threads things might be different??

the biggest feature Rebellion added was people on moddb asking if we're going to port to rebellion and still, somehow moddb comments tend to be more readable than this thread

I dare say you should learn how to use punctuation, let alone proper capitalization, before criticizing others, as your post is pretty darn unreadable.

It's obvious they want to just be left alone both here and on moddb. Just oblige the guys and let them develop their mod. It's been a year since their last relevant update and their wiki updates have slowed considerably since april. A little patience now won't kill anyone or delay the mod any further.

You can oogle and awe when they actually release something new.

Not at all. In my opinion gameplay wise you could do a lot more with the expansions. Your art team is amazing, most of what they've done would transfer to Rebellion just fine, regardless if the shadows and crap are a big improvement or not. And you could add a lot more interesting gameplay elements and faction diversification with all the stuff added since original (like doing doctrines without scraping the third resource). New tools to use are new tools, regardless if you like the packaging, and if it leads to a better end product from you I don't think people will mind paying extra.

We're still coasting on being the only Sins mod to figure out how to do a moddb profile correctly. I think once you do the conversion that buys us another 4 months of unskinned model wip updates.

Actually, kudos on the ModDB thing.  Their format is clear as mud for setting up a profile.

I think most of us are looking forward to actually seeing this.  I also think there is still a lot of life left for Trinity--particularly in the "big mod" niche that DoV occupies.

I'm noticing ManSh00ter's recent absence and like DoV, his Invasion mod is something really looked forward too.  Just don't want to see them languish. The really skilled modding community here is very small and I want to see every real effort succeed.

You still really need to check out the space Dirigibles in "Iron Sky" and work them into your mod.  It's Germany's last chance for the future.

No worries on time frame. A lot of amateur developers and project leads underestimate level of effort like this.

To add to Goa's post, the faction business, that is the one that SD/IC didn't use, can be of great use for your whole doctrines set up, as you can make people actually choose between which doctrine path to go down, versus all past versions of Sins where you would be able to research everything.

Moddb is an utter bitch. I highly recommend never setting your mod as being "Released", because if you do, there's a chance someone other than your staff will add the mod to Desura. If that happens, you will lose control over certain aspects of your mod's profile, because Desura > What the actual modders want.

Yeah, ModDB is the fucking worst. They've gone from being about actual mods to pushing their shit software on everyone.

There really needs to be some sort of alternative, but it doesn't seem likely.

to add to that if we wanted to port to rebellion - as in we saw a clear benefit to the project - we would do it. we hashed out nearly the entirety of our design a year ago to avoid feature creep and endlessly oscillating between broken gameplay systems in testing and we aren't interested in a third resource because even two is largely irrelevant for the game we are making. poorly thought out feature bloat in mods and games alike ruins usability (which is extra crucial in a setting where you can't add a tutorial) and it ruins gameplay. it is more important to create a base that plays "right", as hacky as it may be, than it is to chase endless opportunities for New Stuff and leave what you have undercooked.

i want to say i appreciate the time given to suggesting these concepts because we aren't an omnipotent development Helios AI and certainly overlook possibilities. however the attitude in this thread from people with more than two posts (and on moddb as well, from those same people) is consistently patronizing and passive-aggressive to the point where i wonder if we had lower quality guarantees if we'd even be offered any compliments on the project at all. numerous 3am staff meetings have proven that while an interesting idea, we do not plan on experimenting whether or not people would outright mock us by releasing really stupid looking crap, instead of saying we are good at making cool ships but otherwise incompetent and useless. as such if i take a hostile tone it is only in response to implying i personally am too stupid to do a cost/benefit analysis.

and yes, the only thing more terrible than us is moddb. at least here who you reply to doesnt change depending on how many posts there are on the page
