So, I’ve been playing Sins on and off for about a year now (SP), and I think that this is a pretty good game as-is. However, I also see there is a lot of chatter about balancing issues and talk of a community mod to fix this. Now, I’m no expert on this sort of thing, but if you’re going to completely balance the game, eventually you need to look at the economy, right? I know right now the focus is on the combat aspect of Sins (which is reasonable, the game kinda centers on an inter-galactic war in space), but how’d you get the resources to build that battleship? From the economy.
One of the things that bugs me about Sins is that, like a lot of strategy games, you can collect resources form anywhere on the map and use them anywhere else instantaneously. Never mind that enemy star base sitting between your main empire and the asteroid it cuts off from your empire. Just magically send the resources you collect from the asteroid to the factory in your main empire and use them to build ships to break the blockade. Simple, right? Well, what if there was a way to simulate the transport of resources between worlds?
Suppose that the resource income rate was turned down to, say, 10% of current value. For my original idea, a new structure would be added to the logistics tab that boosted the new resource income of the current planet by 1000% (i.e. back to the original rate). Also, this structure would use the same bonus as the trade port, so for each one that was a part of the “chain”, there would be X% increase in resource income. Or, you could create the structure as a new “star base” and give it the ability to add new modules like the current star base. It’s also possible you could tie this to the current trade port, though that might cause problems with getting the most money out of the trade routes.
Why would anyone do this? Because this could add a true “hit and run” strategy to Sins for economic damage and diversions. By tying resource production to an outside structure, there is a real danger of a “commando” attack force crippling your economy, providing new purpose to some of the smaller, faster ships (Yes, I realize this would favor the Vasari, thanks to their ship abilities and super weapon, but you could also make their resource base much weaker than the other races).
Now, I have zero skills in modding, so I would be unable to try this out, but does anyone know if it’s at least possible to do this? Thanks for any input.
