Why won't people play a 3v3v3 with Diplomacy? - It becomes a 4v5, where you pick your own team.  Or a unlocked 2v2v2 becoming a 3v3 of you own choice?  Rather than time consuming PUGs, which never seem to get started quickly.  In PUGs, Nobody ever wants to be a captain, and then it also takes forever to pick teams.  Invariably someone will bail out because they are unhappy with their team.  Or maybe someone drops, meaning you have redo the whole proccess again.  AND smurfs ruin the whole proccess anyway!

If you start with 3 unlocked teams (not a completely unlocked FFA), you start with other teammates with a 10 relations (rather than 0).  Then there is an incentive to keep these teammates to easily form pacts with, as well as benefit from the bonuses that envoys bring.  Also, the investment that you make in them helps mainatain loyalty.  Granted, you also prefer the adjoining players to be teammates, and this may persuade you to change teams, but ultimately a team of victors will emerge.

At the start of the game, set the size of victor's team in the game's settings.  For a 3v3v3 - set it at 5 players or less, for 2v2v2 - set it at 3 players.  A winning team must have a number of players smaller or equal to that number to be the victors.  Therefore limiting a large team from winning/ganging up against a smaller team.

Zombie thread has been teh resurrected!

I agree with Derek.  Unlocked games generally don't work out very well.  No one wants to be backstabbed by traitorous allies and it's also possible a group of friends could just unite unbeknown to the other players and muck up the game.

One game

I still have never had even one game like this.  So I still don't know, firsthand why not.

Yeah, backstabbing can be a problem, but this can be guarded against.  And a group of freinds might gang up, but so what!  Thats the idea.

With the right settings for a 6 person game, 4 can't win against 2, it has to be a winning team of 3 or less.  Same concept for a larger game.

Quoting Cykur,
Also, pure ffa diplomacy games usually take forever unless one team gangs up on everyone else.  I hate FFA because most of the time there is a ton of  buildup and smalll skirmishes, then everyone quits.  I spent two hours feeling like I didn't do anything.  Huge waste of time.  If you have unlocked teams, I suspect weird stuff like this will also happen.  The flip side is it can be one sided with one mega team steamrolling everyone with no chance to lose.

Quoting Derek06,
...

i however am not a noob, and id like for more skilled players, which means noobs learning...

and means skilled players learning diplomacy...  most of which are simply unwilling or too noobish!

I've only had flat denials.  From kbroken's lame excuse: "9 won't work on a 10 player map".  To your "Ive been in one game and... will never do it again."  To flat out NO's.  The extra planets don't end up all next to one player!  They are spread out evenly.  Come on.  After 1500 games, you'd think he'd know better (& be better).

Yeah, it is stupid to team with everyone.  You only team with someone you can trust, and you demand complete diplomacy.

I also can't stand when people refuse to captain, and then complain about the teams.  But I sympathize with captains, because you have to know everyone, or get stuck with that one bad pick - which usually makes or breaks a team.  How is it possible to know everyone with so many smurfs?  PUGs are broken.  Smurfing isn't going to go away (is it Dirty?).

The game is called Diplomacy, isn't it?  Like Cykur, I suspect weird stuff will happen, but I'd like to give it a try.  I know from experience that true locked FFA's of 4 people (or more) take absolutely forever to resolve.  But I've had OK experiences with 3 person FFAs, therefore I think 3 teams can work.

(BTW, sorry about the cloned post, it must have been an editing glitch, coz I didn't hit the post button twice).

What's liable to happen is that a group of 4 buddies, say all pro players, get on voice comm and unbeknownst to the other players in the game, ally up while the other players are fighting each other.  Then they methodically knock out the other players, sometimes pretending to be allies.  It just seems like that would defeat the purpose of the game; might as well just make it a locked 4v4.

Hopefully, the new Diplomacy update will add penalties for backstabbing.  Pros aren't that much better.  Often there is a very fine line between winning and losing, and a good adjoining teammate can swing that advantage significantly.

How do you pick that locked 4v4?  I'd rather take the time wasted in the lobby picking crappy teams, and use it playing the game picking my own team.

I wouldn't call guys that need to cheat "pros", rather a bunch of punks. A lot like "so called pros" smurfing to stack teams I would guess.

I agree with Sagewon
