Magicka - An Indie RPGish Game

I purchased Magicka today, and I am quite impressed with it so far.  It is an action RPG title for $10, and the gameplay reminds me of Nox a lot.  You control a wizard, and you mix spell elements on the fly to cast different spells.  Experimentation is key, and then you also unlock certain more powerful spells via exploration.  You swap out what staff you are using as you play, and if you, say, fly off a cliff, that staff is gone forever.

The game is definitely indie, and needs polish.  The spells look fantastic, but the world is of a lower grade.  There are a lot of bugs (I haven't run into any major ones yet, but some are having crash issues).  There is nothing like trying to cast a fireball, though, and accidently placing land mines right infront of you!  The game forces you to play with 100% friendly fire on, so if you play Co-op (it supports up to 4), it can be a messy affair.

There is the main story mode, which I'm guessing you could blow through pretty quick once you know what you're doing, but if you are like me you will find infinite ways to freeze and zap yourself to death.  There is also a survivor, last stand mode that is geared to more hardcore players.  I have yet to try it out.

The only "polish" issue is the multiplayer which is completely problematic at the moment. Single player is very solid albeit a bit frustrating in some spots.

I bought it last night, but didn't get much of a chance to play it. Mixing magic to create spells on the fly definitely has an appeal

It's very fun, but I wish it didn't hog 600MB of RAM just to get to the main menu.

I couldn't get through the tutorial -- at some point an info window appeared at the center of my screen, and would not go away.  I couldn't see anything in the middle of the screen.  Also, movement is kind of screwy (zero path finding, can't use the keyboard, etc.).  The part I saw did not feel at all rpgish, but then again, I gave up on it pretty early.  It's definitely not for me.

The game isn't really an RPG, I don't think you level up. Also, there's no pathfinding, you have to keep clicking, or use a gamepad.

Once you get all the elements(takes about 10 minutes), and you start to randomly combine them, I guarantee it will be for you. The insane amount of spells you can make is.... well, insane. Then there's the humor. Good Lord do I wish I could hear that mock language they made up more often.

To move you just hold down LMB and the character moves to the mouse pointer.

I have been hearing good things about it.  Going to pick it up when it makes its way over here.

So I'm having some crash issues.  Not too often, but often enough that restarting at the beginning of the level is getting very annoying.  The last stand bit, though, is very fun - even in single player.  No better way to blow off steam then to make it rain and then set up lightning walls.

Played the demo and I'll very likely be picking it up.  Very fun and many many spell combinations... also you can hurt your teammates if you screw up.  Lots of fun possibilities.

Quoting Heavenfall,

Careful now. You are violating the Norwegian Patent 10023.232 which states: "Only Norwegian citizens are allowed to mock the Swedes".

Do not fear though, we do all the mocking you can ever think of

I liked its idea since they announced Magicka. As it looks Paradox and Arrowhead are having a huge succe with the games. Btw: I like their patching appeal: One patch each day until they fixed their mess!

Is this going to find its way onto Impulse anytime soon?

Yea, right now it uses Steamworks for its multiplayer (maybe some former Demigod flamers can eat some crow right now but that's another story).  It appears we have to integrate Impulse::Reactor into it to take over that part.

Woah... I can't believe it uses Steamworks, the multiplayer connectivity is RUBBISH over the internet.

ill be getting it, i love steam . I actually get irritated when games dont come out on it or come out on other distribution platforms except for it :/. I'd love to be able to pick one DDP and stick with it (nothing against impulse, i just have a HUGE library on steam .

edit:

oh, it would be awesome if someone did something for DDP's like trillian does for messengers! /dreams

The multiplayer has been broken but they're releasing a patch a day (literally) to fix the multiplayer and resolve the issues that some of the others are experiencing. I've already beat the single player portion of the game (was quite funny and good) but am awaiting the fixes so I can fight with other wizards over the net

What stops you from adding games purchased from other sources onto Steam?  Both of the DD clients (Steam and Impulse) allow you to drag and drop things into your library so you can use all your games from one source.  I buy plenty of games off of Steam and play them from Impulse (Civilization V for instance).

It's not akin to say Vudu vs. Amazon on Demand vs. iTunes Movies where you can only see your stuff by going into the particular service.

I wish you guys would allow us to drop games into Impulse, register our CD-Key with Impulse, and then update from Impulse.  Probably not worth it financially for you guys, but it would be convenient for some games.

Sorry for the repost, but I intially posted this in the wrong thread.  Here are my impressions:

Myself and a few buddies played this GEM of a game till late in the night the other day.  I can't remember the last time we all had a laughing-fit in another game we were playing together......truly amazing!

I was told in no uncertain terms that I am  " too dangerous to stand next to "  and that maybe I should   "  go hang out over there somewhere "  hehe

Seriously, as has been pointed out above.......for 10 bucks?  What the hell does one get for ten bucks these days?  An entire evening of unbridled mirth I tell ya!

Go get it nubs!  NOW!1!11

the Monk

EDIT:

Oh and since the game was seriously buggy (for many people) upon release the devs have already patched it 3 times and it was only released on the 25th.  If they keep this patch-pacing up we might be into patch 10 by next week.  No matter, I'd rather have hyper-active devs than one's like those controlled by EA or UBI who aren't even allowed to post in response to community.
