Dominions 3 - huge scale, insane depth, fantastic synergy between magic, armies and artifacts. Rich, wonderful lore.

AI wars - the game has a true AI, also the asymmetric game design is both bold and innovative

Minecraft - I got bored by it, but Notch sure showed those corporate drones a thing about game design

Dwarf fortress - a true simulation, mind-boggling scale, maybe most ambitious game of all times

Tangle in the Web - interactive fiction from Andrew Plotkin, but of the finest quality. Storytelling at its best - text only

Fall from Heaven 2 (Civ4 mod) - the lore is just charming, the diversity in factions is awesome

Dreamweb - one of a kind atmosphere

Another World - quite an accomplishment when it was released, unique, mysterious

Dragontorc

Perihelion

Frozen Synapse

Chess - best abstract strategy ever

ozo, if you've missed dune 2, the first RTS game ever... Well, you don't know ! It was simply amazing ! A new system of game, constructing buildings and harvesting spice while avoiding sand worms !!! That was just everything !!!

It just missed the feature of Emperor: Battle for Dune where you could ride sandworms ! Even if the feature was pretty badly implemented and Sandworms killed too easily. The story of the game though was going too far and exagerated though compared to the books. It was fine until the ending. But Battle for Dune had again, some pretty nice features who were among the first in RTS like the mini-factions to choose from.

As for Blizzard games, again, you must be quite young because Blizzard had some awesome game like superman (a fantastic fighting game), the lost vikings and all hail black thorn ! Better than Flashback !

I want to remind poeple of Shadow Caster, the first game involving transformations and where they had an impact on gameplay !!! Sad they never did anything like that after... We miss that kind of game !

I'd like to point out Archon and Archon Ultra, which were amazing !!! Archon Evolution, the remake, is a pure drug !!!

As for pure Madness between friends, there was Mortal Kombat 2, the best 2d Fighting game ever !! 3rd and after were lame compared to the 2nd one.

And ChuChu Rocket ! Where the music will stay in your head and drive you crazy for a long while after a couple 4 players games with friends !

Well, as i said, i'm 21, we didn't have a computer that could run games really till late '90s. Or was it early '00s? Anyway.

I've played Dune 2 as i said (i said that, didn't i?) but after having played its remake it doesn't feel that good. Oh when it first came out, it would've been awesome probably. And Emperor is pretty cool though i think D2k (and, i suppose, Dune 2 in a way) is better.

As for Blizzard games, i know they have made others than their big three franchises but other than The Lost Vikings, i haven't played them. Oh and The Lost Vikings try didn't last long. Didn't run well... probably bad settings in DosBox.

OZO...  I totally agree about morrorwind.  I was very involved in the oblivion mod community - as a playtester - not a modder.  Only later did i discover Morrowind, and it blows Oblivion right to oblivion. I'm not hopeful about skyrim... but we will see....

I agree, Dune 2 / 2000 were always better !!! The musics of Dune 2000 were totally awesome !

Westwood just did a wonderful job there ! With Emperor, everything became just too powerfully destructive actually ! The tanks were blown away very quickly, same with sandworms... And ever your base was just holding a matter of seconds against a powerful attack even if you build tons of walls and turrets as I love to do it ! Emperor just failed with being more aggressive than it's predecessors.

Dune 2 was amazing when it first came out ! I remember with a friend, I was 6, we were even trying to play dune 2 on paper because we loved it ... We had put some kind of rules to play turn by turn with a die at school... LOL good times !

You should definitely try black thorn, the character is a bit rigid, but it's so much fun, especially towards the end, lol It's actually sad because black thorn had a lot of success and blizzard never came back on it... I guess they just evolved the game with Warcraft 1 or did they? What year were WC 1 and Black Thorn? Can't remember ! I'd like to see a remake though !

That makes me think that abuse was totally awesome !

And it was slipstream was a great futuristic racing game... First that really amazed was Pod 1, the first coming of the 3d FX, what a pure wonder it was !

As well as that all those first 3d games that came on 3D FX... Oh my god , that was so awesome, I got so addicted to the 3d fx, I was so jealous of my friend who had one, without one, everything just looked blend and not the same ! The feeling the 3d fx gave when it came out was a wonder ! Now it's just casual ! lol

For Morrowind, it's the first game that really involved me  in the elderscrolls series, I had played Arena and Daggersfall before but morrowind did so much ! The mod community was even more awesome than Oblivion, The underground dwarf train mod going entirely throughout the island was amazing !!! The vampires and werewolf later were a blast ! and well, nothing ever beat making your own castle grow from a seed after reaching the head of the Telvanni Household... There were some pretty amazing mods too with crafting, housing, etc... There was an atlantis mod, wich was amazing and followed by a fishing mod adding plenty of fishes... I spent hours to make craft and to take all those mannequins to display in my house all the armors of the games !

Morrowind... The only game where I set my goal as collecting all the spoons of the game for me... I stole so many spoons just for the glory to collect them all ! I assure you that nothing beats collecting spoons, not even catching pokemons !!!!

Ok, after that I deleted morrowind because I needed to install other games and because with all the mods I had morrowind was simply HUUUGE in gb on my poor hard drive... I regret it ! I was stupid ! Now I'm not sure I would find back half of the mods I was using

They both came out in 1994, but which came first I don't know, though Warcraft was in November and I am not sure about an exact date for Blackthorne, so you could be right.

What I miss in the lists so far:

Anno 1503 - best trade/city-building game (better than 1404 maybe)

/and yes: Civilization, Shogun 1, Baldur's Gate, Diablo, Morrowind . . . /

I have to add Sim City 3000 because it's the only sim city that made me laugh ! Especially when I created TrashCity where I was accepting trash from all the cities around and they were dumped in the middle of mine !

With that, I never really played it, but once, it's the sims, I did something I cannot tell on the forums and it was just hilarious, my friend next to couldn't stop laughing ! I called my house the temple of perversion !

Civilization 2: Test of Time was simply wonderful ! But never equaled Master of Magic which could be my all time favorite !

As for old games, I'll definitely have to add Celtic Legends on Amiga ! So much fun

And Diggers too ! Because digging for hours just to find ressources and make the best tunnels ever is a concept we don't see enough in games !

I have no idea either, I just know that blackthorne was lots of fun ! I played it before I tried Warcraft 1 though. At that time I was still playing Dune 2.

Black Thorne was probably developped pretty quickly compared to warcraft 1 as the gameplay is really basic: hide, shoot, move, climb a ladder , jump, set a bomb... Let's do that again... Oh upgrade for health... oooh upgrade for shotgun... Free some prisoners, kill some more, continue, hide all the time... And that's it ! But I don't know, the way it was made was so fun ! And I definitely loved the main character with his grunch look. Way more charismatic than flashback's character.

Grrrrr! I made it my goal to drink all of the soup in the land of Morrowind, Do you know how bloody difficult that was to do with you stealing all of the spoons?

Ive been playing computer games for about as long as there has been computers. And I have a list of "forever living" games on my machines. Every new machine I create or upgrade for my house gets certain programs always loaded, including certain games. Most are years and years old so obviously its not the eye and ear candy. Its the game itself. Im not always sure why they are on the list. I just know that they are. Probably because most of them have extensive setup options and in-game variation. I play almost exclusively Solo-Play so such things would be important since I dont look to other human players to provide game variety. Its also important to note that I am aware and usually own the sequels when there is one but I am not as thrilled with them. A) Stars! VGA Planets 3 C) Space Empires IV D) Master of Magic E) King of Dragons Pass F) Diablo II G) Ultima Online H) and absolutely Dominions 3 I also greatly enjoyed Daggerfall, Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes

Also worth mentioning is Tranquility. Its quite unique. Instead of stress and excitement, ir rewards you for playing smooth and relaxed. Its good to have on your machine for when you need something calming to kill some time with.

I also greatly enjoyed Daggerfall, Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes

I'd like to add Betrayal at Antara for notable mention solely for the game environment's side quests and substories.  Other than that the game was very unpolished among other problems like the main story itself.

A note of good writing is when you can pull off good entertainment using only the little things.

It's expected to be published in the first half of 2011 (this year).

Also for my most groundbreaking game, I would have to say Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne.  The sheer power of the world editor allows for an insane amount of customization, and new maps, systems and mods are being created daily by the faithful modding community.  I have never tired of the game, though it was released like 7-8 years ago.  Well worth your money, you will not be disappointed.

TBH, I am not proud of this, but Runescape did it for me. It was the first game I played that was in 3d. I mean a virtual world environment where you can interact with people. I am not much of a people person so I when on Runescape and got "friends".

But nowadays, Minecraft (a truly addictive game). I mean if anyone have played lego they would find Minecraft fun and entertaining for hours, even if you play on peaceful mode. Building whatever you want, finding ways to build a better structure than you have built before. And then there are these minigames in the Minecraft such as the "official sport" where you verses other players or work with others players to build something great.

AOEII also did it for me, I mean it was the first "true" game that my parents allowed me to buy and play other than Simcity 3000

Wizardry - a truly addictive game that ran on an Apple II+ with 16 kB of RAM.

Warcraft I - hello RTS genre

Nethack  -  a highly successful, open-source community project.  The source code itself was extremely hacked up, and the game had Easter Eggs galore.  Play balance was seriously screwed up, but no one cared because you were too busy unlocking all the game's secrets.

MUD!!!    -  the first internet game that I know of.  The idea that you could just hang out with people around the world, no long distance charges, and you go kill stuff together was just plain cool.

Homeworld is definitely something else, nothing has really lived up to its legacy. I still haven't beat the campaign after eight years, yet I still keep it installed. The gameplay changes that I have managed to experience in the Homeworld 2 demo scare me, though I did manage to compensate for them, not that I could get the full-game nowadays.
