Using the latest patch and the game runs great for a few hours. The problem we are having issues with is the long pauses after 2 - 3 hours of game play.
We tried several things, Hard AI, small fleets; the game had a few stutters. This was on a map that has 36 planets.
Game lasted 3.3 hours.
Again, same map, next hardest level up small fleets again. This difficulty is the next higher one added to Diplomacy Not maxed though.
Issue here was we got in about 2.45 hours and the game started to pause, long pauses lasting about 6 to 10 mins. the game would just freeze up cant zoom can’t move around. We waited them out the game would un-pause and run for about 30 seconds sometimes longer and pause again. This happened about 5 or 6 times. I finally was able to head into the pirates area with a large fleet and remove the pirates. We had no more issues after that.
Some of the problems we are seeing is that the AI even on smallest fleet setting is still over building smaller frigates. way to many, this is a big issue and is a big part of the problem in this game. I have asked several times in the past that they make the AI concentrate less on Frigates and more of building Capitalship.
If the AI took this approach the game would lag way less and would have way less issues. You all really need to look into other AI and how they are scripted to building fleets and change this. Yes its kewl to have mass fleets, but Capitalships are the better choice and should be utilized more often with smaller complements of frigates and cruisers.
Hopefully this helps; love the game just can’t stand al the long pauses when you are trying to play the game. I’m not sure if the Pirates were a major part of the problem or not. I will be playing this again to see. By the Way, this was a Four player Coop map we played with Two AI and Two Humans over the Internet, this game lasted 5.25 hours.
