[MOD]-WIP-Sins of Project 91

A mod for Rebellion:

The Shroud, a nebulous field of dark matter enveloping an entire section of the galaxy. A muted pulse of thrums emanate from somewhere deep inside, almost imperceptibly nudging all of the miniscule stars close to its perimeter. Even the one adjacent black hole is kept in place by the field’s gentle, yet firm presence. The soft glow from distant stars fills the enormity of the Shroud’s bubble-like shell, seeming to be tantalizingly close in the huge expanse. A casual glance wouldn’t reveal the immensely complicated webbing of nearly invisible dark matter on the inside of the accretion shell. That glance also wouldn’t reveal the fact that no signals other than the brightest light sources could penetrate the field, or that impacts from all substantial matter were instantly obliterated. No, this field innocently pulsed around what it was designed to protect the rest of the galaxy from. Humanity. Even the humanoid species inside of the Shroud with their intense curiosity hadn’t noticed the uniform muffling all signals, that is, until the field had vanished.

“Is the drive operational?” A human in thick molybdenum-nanotube armor was busily preparing the next experimental darkdrive, designed to propel itself with a specially prepared ardenite core. The darkdrive was an immensely complex device, roughly the size of an industrial skyscraper. Taking a carbon-iron-uranium core, and stripping away protons while forcing it to maintain its mass, producing a super dense ball of matter that interacted with gravity in strange ways. The possibility of light-speed travel became reality as the drive’s gravitational properties could focus on distant sources of gravity and pull or push on them. The only way to keep the ship from being pulverized with the severe effects of this sudden acceleration and deceleration was to create larger cores that would shield the ship with centripetal force. The ardenite core was the result of a desire to shrink the drive to make it able to fit inside of a standard frigate, making carrier escort unnecessary. The dark matter projects had mostly been successful, and this one was optimistically expected to succeed.

“The conversion has been successful, sir.” A similarly shielded human ran up with his report.

“Excellent, Earth control will be pleased with the results of Project 91.” The supervisor hurried into the huge shielded bunker along with several hundred other humans, and sealed the enormous door. He walked over to a console and sat down, his masked face staring intently at the enormous force readouts.

“Sir! The antigrav might not be able to handle the stress that would be caused by spinning it up!” One of the console lights was blinking red, a sign that the repulsors couldn’t handle the pull caused by the super-dense core.

“Are we mice? NO! Spin it up anyways. It should become stable enough to support itself.” The supervisor looked down at the large array of green lights. “Are all personnel safely inside the bunkers?” The AI supervising the experiment nodded a yes with its insubstantial holographic projection. “Status report EI-2453.” He said into the console. “The core is stressing our repulsors nearly to the maximum after achieving desired density. Bunker and life support status, operating at perfect levels. All staff accounted for and core is ready for spinning up and placement. Core is not collapsing into self like Project 78, but maintaining perfect shape and uniform gravity, albeit stronger than previous projects.” The monitor displayed the response from Earth scientists trillions of miles away.

“Proceed.”

The supervisor flicked several switches and entered in a passcode through the glowing keypad.

“Spinning up in 9, 8, 7, 6, 5...” He checked a meter and its readings. “…4, 3, 2, 1.” At one he pressed the enter key.

The entire planet and star system were engulfed in the sheer enormity of the energy release, and were pulverized into highly energetic particles. The flare could be seen as an enormously bright flash viewable even from outside of the Shroud, leaving humanity to wonder what had just occurred. Unfortunately, far more had occurred than they could even comprehend. The Shroud projector had been in that star, perfectly safe, until a colossal explosion of energy had wiped the star, the projector, and a couple billion humans from existence.

The Shroud began to fade, slowly, losing all matter and gravity that it had held together, releasing it into the depths of space. Its dissipation noticed only by a small research vessel sent to survey the Shroud’s weaknesses. To their shock, the Shroud began to lose energy, which had been, they guessed, powered by an indestructible relic somewhere inside. The Elder would be most interested by this turn of events; telling him would be first priority. The Research vessel turned about and jumped back into familiar space.

I am being rather vague on purpose, as I do not wish to spoil anything right now.

I also don't consider myself a good writer, so deal with whatever your complaints might be.

From the story you've posted this looks like it would work best as a total conversion.  You should probably replace the original races, especially if Rebellion is as RAM-hungry as these forums think it will be.

Hah.  It's better then a lot of forum...  Uh, people...  Anyway, gotta agree with Sparda.  For right now, plan on replacing the original factions, which come rebellion will be six.

Shall do.

I think that it would be more fun to release everything all at once than to release bits and pieces.

But that would make everyone wait for a long time, soooo, I shall release in four parts.

Announcing Part One

Sins of the Humanitarian Defense Navy

-Your typical human race, the HDN is all about a solid wall of defense and offense. Whether it be a starbase that teleports around the gravwell, or a titan-class ship with a massive Radon Converter Cannon, you will never be short on clever strategies and powerful weaponry.

-After their allegiance with the peculiar empathic Shaesu, the HDN's ship defenses reached a new standard as the Sha incorporated their force-reflective shielding systems. These additions proved to be very handy as the HDN expanded outwards and met with small pockets of resistance to their conquest. After many years of research, Dr. Frederick Williams finally completed the first macroscale FTL broadcast Internet Router, an enormous structure strategically placed in the approximate center of HDN-controlled space. This linked all of the outer and inner colonies through the enormously flexible Extranet systems, and allowed instant communication between the colonies. This was a relatively peaceful time, scouts were steadily roving past the borders of known space, and all local uprisings were put down with an orbital bombardment. Then came the discovery of Ardenite, an extremely dense metallic substance whose volatile properties gave it use in many creative applications. A series of secret projects were funded on an outer world to discover the uses of the metal. Over the course of thirty years, scientists blew it up, shaped it, smashed it to see how it reacted, and came to the conclusion that it reacted with just about everything. So it came, that Project 91 was the ill-fated test that caused an exaton explosion of energy, vaporizing the star and its satellites. Of course, this obvious goof-up on the part of the government could not be hidden from public view as the planet had had quite a large colony. Unfortunately, the Shroud, a super-dense shield that had protected Humanity's sector of the galaxy, was destroyed, and its absence was finally noticed by the sensors set to monitor all distant emissions.

After several years of mopping up, the United Systems' governing body decided that their expansion would continue into the newly discovered Firius system, a distant series of stars and planets rich in resources and life. They expanded recklessly, razing the inhabitants, taking their planets in the name of the HDN and setting them up for terraforming and recolonization. This system worked perfectly until the majority of the Firius system was colonized, and the fledgling colonies were linked up to the Extranet. It was after some more exploration around a nearby nebula that a scout frigate vanished without a trace. A follow-up task force was similarly vaporized without any distressful signals. While debating what to do, the HDN received a distress call from an outer colony, describing extremely advanced ships that rained down destruction on the local fleets. Sending several battleships to deal with the threat, the HDN soon found themselves terrified at the fact that their fleet had been dispatched with little losses on the opposing side. Rallying all forces, they jumped into the system and obliterated the opposing fleet, but not without heavy losses. After analyzing the debris, HDN scientists discovered that the technology employed against them was well beyond anything ever even fantasized. Preparing their economy and populations for war, the HDN employed countless Sha for research positions on mobility, defenses, and warfare, generating a plethora of blueprints and finalized designs that were relayed through the Extranet to the primary hub for access. The HDN would not go down without a fight.

HDN Frigate Meshes complete. On to texturing.

Anyone have any suggestions on what programs to use?

I just use GIMP and paint.net typically.

HDN frigates:

Voyager 1000 Universal Probe

-A versatile scout design with good ancestry. Can focus on distant light sources or become a useful weapon with research.

Goblin Battle Frigate

-A quick, light ship that is great for dogfighting. It is equipped with localized magnetic field generators and powered armor.

Chimaera Railgun Frigate

-A bulkier design that is meant to stay out of harm's reach, but can defend itself in close quarters by shoving frigates away with every shot of its railguns.

Hydra Colony Frigate

-The Hydra has been the standard of outpost establishment ever since humanity first entered deep space. While being not very durable, it can still reach impressive speeds.

Griffin AA Frigate

-The Griffin makes use of its high-tech micro-missile launchers in order to wipe entire squadrons out of space.

HDN Cruisers:

Scarab Assault Carrier

-The Scarab accomplishes its job well, that is, being to field its three squadrons. When under pressure it can use its powered armor for enhanced protection.

Vampire EM Cruiser

-The Vampire is very effective at enemy strike craft control and shield management, using its huge arrays of electromagnets to stick strike craft to its hull.

Salamander Dampener

-The Salamander reduces damage on all nearby friendly ships by a little. The ability stacks, so having other Salamanders nearby can help your ships' survivability greatly.

Rukh Heavy Cruiser

-Equipped with powered armor and exuding confidence, the Rukh embodies power in its purest form. Enemy ships will quail before its blistering array of canister rocket launchers.

Basilisk Siege Cruiser

-The HDN decided not to play around with fragile little siege frigates, and instead packed their siege frigates and anti-structure cruisers into one sushi roll of planet-bombing starbase-popping delight.

Revenant Mobile Node

-The Revenant is a staple to every fleet, the HDN were able to pack an Extranet node transceiver and a frigate construction podule into a cruiser body. All frigates (no cruisers) built by it are more expensive, but are ready from the get-go. How useful.

Currently I have everything down -music.

Just completed most of the logistics structure meshes. Texturing is going to happen once I finish all of the models for the HDN.

I am certainly willing to take ideas that would match the HDN's theme.

Begin suggestions now, if anyone wants to. I probably won't have any...

I dont really have any ideas, but i wanted to say i appreciated what you wrote. It was well written and entertaining, although it told me nothing abouth whats to come. But i guess that was your intent. :)
