Well you really should try and get the serial back, either by finding the book or try emailing stardock support. But anyways, if you got to the mods tab in the main menu and hit "show mod path", the path it gives you is where you put the mod, even if the default path it should be.
Further, I advise that the Devs add custom map sharing to Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion.
