So with Impulse over to Gamestop and the digital distribution competition no longer something we’re participating in we’ve developed a new digital updating client – Stardock Central (what’s old is new again).

But unlike the old “big” client, the new one is very…very simple.

image

(sorry for the lame screenshot, I’m caught up on my games on this new machine and haven’t installed any apps yet).

Your Stardock purchases will show up here once you login. Just pick what you want to install (or update) and press a button and it’ll use our massively fast CDN to install it (we have a long-term agreement with our CDN except now the only thing using its bandwidth is our stuff so the download speeds are kind of ridiculous – it’s like being the only guy on a 1 gigabyte line).

image

The new settings includes an option to have it simply update your software automatically.  So you can either choose to stick with older versions or always have it up to date.

..

OK, let’s say you don’t like to have to install a client at all.  That’s fine too.  You can update your software and games via the web as well:

image

Pick whether it’s software or games and it’ll look at your account, when you last updated, and off you go.  The installer will figure out what you need to install (i.e. if you have multiple machines with different versions) and off you go.

It’s designed to be as streamlined as possible.

UPDATE: TRY THE LATEST VERSION HERE:

Quoting ZombiesRus5,
Because Stardock has more than just gaming applications to sell as well as FE which probably won't be Steamworks.

That's why I wrote gaming products.

But at lest they could enable installation and updates throughout it if ICO is getting scraped.

That is why I pointed out the obvious non-gaming apps and other games that aren't steamworks.

It's not like they built their downloader to support Rebellion only.

Don't see why they couldn't support this. Especially if it's a faster download.

Quoting starkers,
Okay, thanks for that tidbit... but I'm easily confused... led astray, for which I blame Jafo [I recall reading he still uses the old SDC for something or other]

Yes, I still have the old SDC....it doesn't do anything re keeping current with your apps...but it does have the IRC client which I'm used to...and a web browser functionality....

....and nostalgia.  Nostalgia ain't what it used to be....

You barely said anything in the first place...

Which is still more than anyone from Stardock has said

Like I said, I knew you kept it for some reason or other... and the fact that you have now given a more detailed explanation still doesn't excuse the fact you confuseded me in the first place.

Does anyone at least have a rough release date for this?  Month maybe, or even year?

It's in extended testing now, so hopefully within the next couple of weeks possibly.

Awesome!

It is now being tested by a few folks outside of Stardock adn we are getting reports of things that were not found internally.  Nothing critical but nothing we want to release into the wild either.

Soon.

Extended testing = Beta status.

Couple of weeks = This month of April or (somehow) less.

Ever since Adam was a pup I've had a little 'Stardock' icon on my desktop...for SDC [the original].

Now I have 2.

There IS light at the end of the tunnel...and yes, it looks like those screenies above....

Nope. No IRC for Jafo.

He'll have to stick to SDC V1 a bit longer.

Hi All

Twas just wondering, is there maybe an update post you tech guys at Stardock could make, just a rundown of what is being done on the new Stardock Central App? Just something like this is being worked on and that is being worked on , and these features are complete, but this packaging of apps is going slow, but we are getting there, and these features will be added in the near future. Maybe some new updated pics?

Just basic status update for us folks waiting patiently.

As to what's done and what isn't... Pretty much everything we wanted to get done IS done for this release. We have plans for the future, but nothing I want to talk about yet. At this point, we're just fixing bugs and making any changes to the UI that may be confusing or broken.

lol, I wasn't implying any kind of release date with my "everything we wanted to get done is done" statement. Just that we are where we want to be
