Movie snobbage: The Star Wars prequels were bad? THAT bad? What?

This link is to the review by redlettermedia. I cannot insert it as a youtube video because then it overwrites the below one for some reason.

I agreed on some of the parts regarding plot holes and retcons (those are my pet peeves), but I believe the majority of the view is biased movie snobbage, particularly the comments about lack of characterization and emotion, and the idea that CGI destroyed the novelty and believability of Star Wars.

For example the guy says that obi wan didnt get mad enough or something, and the "boring" beautifully choreographed lightsaber battles were diminished from emotion and interest. I think there was just as much emotion in the battle against Maul as any other in the series. When Qui-Gon died, I cared for the character and so felt for him. When Obi-Wan said "NOOOO", I felt his rage as he barrelled out of the hallway in an explosive flurry.

Im not going to be wasting my time defending the prequels when someone has already done it for me:

Dont ask me where part one is. I have no idea.

I was pretty surprised when I heard all the hate against Star Wars prequels. I wonder how many other people will be when they see this.

Quoting psychoak,
Then you have to relegate yourself to watching movies made by people that aren't idiots/children, a significantly smaller subset than the whole.

Ain't that the truth...

Crappy movie now in 3d!  You notice how 0% of the trailers show jar jar?

No, actually, I didn't...

3d movies give me migraines, so I try really hard not to notice anything about them.  Smart move though, assuming anyone can forget the stupid bastard long enough to convince themselves to get suckered twice.

That rules out just about everything after Jaws. Which thankfully includes everything by Adam Sandler.

The closest thing to sci fi by Adam Sandler I know of is probably Fast Forward.   Which interestingly had a nice life lesson in it.  In some respects Fast Forward was idiotic, but that one meaning about "don't fast forward in life" was deep.  Of all the movies out there with the depth of a kleenex, I don't think that Adam Sandler movie was one of them.

Lucas has made his $$ so i guess he can pander to the fanboys and show as little of that floppy eared turd as possible. I'd hate to see his antics in 3D though.

I too am not a fan of 3D. Being a glasses wearer certainly doesnt make putting on another pair of glasses all that fun, and i'm yet to see a movie that really blows me away with the 3D..(tho Avatar was pretty, and little else)

I was considering seeing Phantom Mencase in 3D though, the pod race might look really cool, but then i realized i'd being paying money to see Phantom Menace, and i'd rather wait for Prometheus. (or gouge my eye balls out...)

I was pretty surprised when I heard all the hate against Star Wars prequels. I wonder how many other people will be when they see this.

You found one yet?

Yeah plenty actually. Also considering I didnt hear about all the hate for the prequels untils years after the fact Id say you are all grossly outnumbered.

I didn't think Avatar was that great in 3D versus 2D. The lights and all were actually dumbed down by the glasses. Want to see a movie that makes great use of the 3D without looking like it's making any effort? See Hugo. Not only great in 3D, but a nice departure in the style of storytelling from the norm of movies, largely due to the faithfulness of the story, and the simplicity of the original writer's intent.

Quoting Draakjacht,
reactor that explodes so easily?!?!

If you know a way to make reactor cores unexplodable, I think you need to stop modding and posting and instead make billions on fail safe nuclear reactors. And donate a small fraction of that to me and ZombieRus so we can mod Sins full time and prove anything is possible with enough buffs.

Quoting Draakjacht,
See Hugo

I do plan on it actually, just on Blu-Ray at home rather than the cinemas. I'm a massive Scorsese fan and this work looks to be rather original (from what reviews i have seen and read, the book is meant to be a great read as well), something Crappywood lacks these days.

Quoting Draakjacht,

That's where bad movies fail and what appear to be mediocre movies excell!

Okay...Your OP led me to believe that you didn't discover any hate till seeing the video you linked, which you posted on the 31st, so one assumes (or at least i did) thats when you first discovered the video, and thus, the hate.

As for being grossly outnumbered, i think it's fair to say we live in vastly different social groups, since i know no-one, and i mean personally, not over the net, no-one, who's first exposure to Star Wars was the classic trilogy, who actually likes and believes the prequels are a success, and not the merchandise driven 'look what i can do with a talented team of graphic artists' slush that we got.
I'd be confidant that anyone over 30(ish) who is a SW fan and grew up with the classics and saw them in their first run in the cinemas, probably doesn't think too much of the prequels.

Quoting JCD-Bionicman,

. , ,I didnt hear about all the hate for the prequels untils years after the fact Id say you are all grossly outnumbered.

You must have either still been in school or not following the internet in those days.

From Wikipedia:

The Phantom Menace received mixed reviews from film critics and international backlash from fans. It received a rating of 61% from Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 5.9/10, making it the lowest rated Star Wars film.

Attack of the Clones received generally mixed reviews from critics. On the Rotten Tomatoes review site, the film received a 67% favorable rating based on 218 reviews.

Revenge of the Sith did fare a bit better:

Critical reaction towards Revenge of the Sith was generally positive. Film review site Rotten Tomatoes calculated an approval rating of 80% based on 250 reviews, making it the highest-rated out of the prequel trilogy and the third highest-rated film of the entire Star Wars saga.

All the films were getting negative reactions at websites within weeks of opening. And although Sith did get a better score, it still took criticism regarding the dialogue, with some critics saying it was on the same level with Menace and Clones.  Of course, all three had high box office and brought in a lot of money, so as far as the bean counters are concerned, they're great films.  And if you think we're all "grossly outnumbered," long-time fans of science fiction don't always agree with the opinions of the general public.  And as a side note, you seem insistent in both your thread topics that you're the only one here with an opinion that is the "right" one, and just as insistent that you must "win" every time.  Maybe you've been taking too much Charlie Sheen.

Probably likely more 'confident' ... Spell checker .... but this little wood duck, at the over 30[ish] mark of 57 gave up on expecting anything good from SW once those almost interminable 3D credits  ended.

The prequils were just more of the same [or less depending on your view]....

100% correct.

It's too bad really that the last few generations (not knowing anything but the current "consumption-driven-culture") missed out on just good old fashioned story-telling in books, cinema, hell even music.

I'd have to agree with that, no one scene exemplifies it more than the gibberish between Anakain and Padme in her/their quarters.

Quoting the_Monk,
hell even music.

Dear lord, don't get me started on "music"..

Too right! To fight this, i made my boy watch SW in the order (i feel at least) they should be watched in, that being IV, V, VI, I, II, III, since i knew that once he watched the prequels and got a taste of how Lucas killed the 10 yr old inside all us "oldies", with floppy ears and the droid stooges, i'd never get him to watch the classics.

More to your point, i can't convince him to watch Blade Runner, yet you can't pry any one of the three Transformers movies from his Blu-Ray player.....An injustice i work on daily to rectify.

For a prequel series that was supposed to explain how Luke &  Leia's parents met, the romantic interludes were the most poorly written love scenes in the history of film.

Hard to argue with this. Even the failed love of Kermit and Miss Piggy is superior to the prequels!!

Quoting Fuzzy Logic,
Is this thread going to be a stand up fight or just another bug hunt?

Clarify.

Quoting Donfield,
And if you think we're all grossly outnumbered...

Which, you are

long-time fans of science fiction don't always agree with the opinions of the general public.

Someone asked how my "search for people who agreed with me" was going and I answered it. Whether or not "long time fans" agree or not is different matter entirely.

And as a side note, you seem insistent in both your thread topics that you're the only one here with an opinion that is the "right" one, and just as insistent that you must "win" every time.

Wh... and you guys DONT? The fuck is this selfrightous bullshit?

Ok..not to drag another threads arguments here...but..that is you opinion based on your experiences. Let's take this thread alone as the sample for who is outnumbered. I guess i need to point out, that it's you.

Quoting JCD-Bionicman,

I don't beleive it is. It goes to further the point of which group is in the minority when it comes to the prequel trilogy.

Quoting JCD-Bionicman,
Wh... and you guys DONT? The fuck is this selfrightous bullshit?

Ok, so yes, your intent is just to argue then. This comment of yours in rebuttal of one voice, you slam everyone by insinutaing we all are selfrightous and that we all maintain we are pigheaded enough to beleive we are always right.

You make that claim why? or should i just say..

Don't act so shocked.  You deliberately titled this thread as "Movie snobbage: The Star Wars prequels were bad? THAT bad? What?"

which in itself is provocative and inviting conflicting opinions, as if anyone should have the effrontery to belittle the fruit of St. George's loins.
