Anyone else looking forward to the Fallen Enchantress Campaign?  I know that the sandbox mode is the bread and butter of any strategy title, but I am really looking forward to seeing what Mr. Jon Shafer has been concocting for the campaign component of FE.  Would it be too much to ask to get a portion of say ACT I in a future Beta release?

Appreciate the response Jon   I'm a little surprised at the hostility towards campaigns to be honest. To me, I'm not sure why you wouldn't want an added layer of playability to a game. You don't have to touch the campaign at all if you don't want, but please don't dismiss it entirely for those that are interested...

I love the campaign mode, it like a mission that you have to do to be come rulers of the world, instead of just random kill everything (sandbox mode)

I also want there to be a special item that you get for completing the campaign which you can use in sandbox mode\multi player mode.

As long as its not too powerful.

Eg. Necklace that adds +1 mana per turn

The only problem with campaigns, you only ever do them once, but you play sandbox\multi player mode MANY MANY times. But if campaign mode gave you items to keep (maybe one item per level you play the campaign on) in the other games, you would be more likely to play it a few times.

But there would have to be some 'anti-cheating'. Most games theses days, you have to play with an internet connection, and theses 'locked' items are linked to the account.

Now that is an interesting idea.  As far as I know, never before done in a Stardock game.  But you're right, it would increase the incentive to do the campaign.

Agree with most here, sandox and multiplayer are the most important modes in these games.

Sandbox is why I'll play the game. I might try the campaign at some point but probably won't give it much of a shot if the first one or two scenarios don't impress. I tend not to play campaigns if games have sandbox modes.

I think some folks are overlooking a few things here regarding campaigns.

  1. Campaigns are only as good as the people that make them. A good campaign can be a joy. I bad one, not so much.
  2. Having the tools to build FE campaigns in the game is very important to modders, who can use the campaign designer tools to not only build their own campaings for FE, but to also build campaigns and storys for their own mods. Want to do a LOTR total conversion mod complete with campaign? You'll be able to do that as long as they have campaigns supported in the vanilla game. This is incredibly important to modders and what can ultimately be done with mods.

So, I don't care if the official campaign stinks, I think modders will eventually create some fantastic user made campaigns. I've very glad SD has included that ability in this game.

Although it would still be much better for FE as a whole to have a great in-built campaign, to give that WOW! factor and encourage more people to get into making campaigns because of the good example.

I think that there should be no multiplayer 'bonus' for finishing the campaign.

Maybe playing through the campaign could unlock an extra faction, or an extra race, or a few more options in the "Custom Factions" screen ... but it shouldn't give any actual BONUS to multiplayer/sandbox unless that bonus is simply more options ...

In the spirit of unlocking new Racers in a racing game, or a fighter in a fighting game, except that none (for FE) should be OP ...  just different.

Personally I don't like when campaigns unlock something, equally I prefer when playing through the game does not unlock anything, (well with the exceptions of movies or maps, in both cases). Since I don't like when my save file becomes of major importance because I unlocked something silly, like the faction I enjoy playing, the faction trait I feel I love, or starting with a 2nd level hero.

Besides from that, I hope to see a nice campaign, I usually like the campaign as an introduction to the game, and an introduction to the story behind the game, also puts some "faces" into the game story which I like

Sincerely

True. Its probably best if the Campaign doesn't unlock anything usable in sandbox/multiplayer ...

Hmm.

While I would like all my toys available for the Sandbox ... Starcraft 2 DID allow for extra units and upgrades in the campaign as opposed to multiplayer ...

But ultimately I think its just because that is the type of game Starcraft is ... its designed for professional multiplayer. Meanwhile, in a game like FE, every in-game asset should be usable in any mode (theoretically, considering techs and quests that don't always appear

I wouldnt mind "upgrades" that lasted throughout the campaign, but that is for the campaign designers to work with ^^ (like more traits or etc).

I am totally sure they will make an awesome campaign

I disagree. Campaigns should open no new factions, races etc that I do not have access in the Sandlot version of the game. Some of us hate liner campaigns (and yes it will be liner just like all campaigns are for this type of game) and don't want to waste time playing them just to unlock a feature that should be accessed in the normal (sandbox) game.

There's an "Edit" button to allow you to edit your own posts.  You can't completely delete it, but you could remove all the content.

Just hover your cursor over the separator following your post and the edit button should show up.

Quoting joasoze,
Forcing me to play campaign to get normal functionality in sandbox would pretty much make me a hostile puppy. Totally uncalled for, and I hope that this is a thing for EA and Ubisoft only. Heroes VI have some stuff in that vein.

It has to be designed so no one feels forced to play the campaign mode for the 'bonus' item or what ever it might be.

Maybe it can just add a 'fluff item' Like a Pink plate armor or something else which does not give any advantage but does give something.

E.g. a new skin for a building (statue of the hero from the campaign mode) gives the same effects as the tower but you can't build both.

What type of items\skins do you think would be a cool bonus for playing the campaign without making you feel forced to play it.
