Choosing Loyalist or Rebel at start?

I haven't played the beta but I have been looking through beta footage on youtube and I've noticed that they choose the faction that they'll belong to at the start.

Is this just for the convenience in the beta or are they going to stick with that idea?  I recall hearing something about having to make the decision during the game.  The concept doesn't feel quite as awesome if it's just something we pick at the beginning and stick to the entire game.

Not sure. In the BETA you do indeed have to choose at the beginning and it looks pretty permanent to me.

Yeah I recall them initially saying that you would choose the path in the tech tree and then your options would change from there.  Maybe there was an issue getting the AI to choose each time or something, but as it stands now in the beta you choose before the game starts.

BTW both factions are pretty sweet.  The Loyalist are a beast at turtelling and slowly dominating.  The rebels hit hard and fast.

When I play as the Loyalist I move slowly, take a planet - max it's defenses, add 2 starbases and then move on the to the next target.

With the rebels Im constantly on the attack, barely waiting long enough to secure the previous planet - or just leave a small force while that planet builds while the most of my vanguard moves forward, crushing my foes

They are sadly sticking with the idea of you choose in the beginning. The whole choosing during the game was a bit more complicated then they expected it to be.

Not for them, for the "new players" supposedly.

I really don't understand HOW it could be more complicated. I think the current 'choose before you play' is honestly more confusing than anything! I believe they didn't have enough 'differentiating techs' and the tech trees probably looked the same. <- this would be easy to fix ... I just don't know why they haven't asked our opinion. '

I think a campa...er, set of tutorials could have guided new players on how to make the choice midway through ..maybe.

It really wouldn't be hard ... you either choose because you are not able to advance up the research tree any farther unless you pick a side ... or to unlock specialized abilities and research (which likely will disable other research opportunities) you have to pick a side.

This is VERY simple ...

I don't see why they can't either make it like they said it was going to be, i.e. chose your allegiance in a match, or at least like CnC Generals: Zero Hour where the original factions were still available, otherwise it will never be a true replacement for Diplomacy/Trinity.
