Well, my guess is that it has to do with the weapon range of the kodiak...HCs have a very short weapon range (3150, IIRC), and the target's center has to be in range of the Kodiak in order for it to hit it...my guess is that the titan is so big, the only way the kodiaks can be within 3150 meters of the titan's center is to literally be bumping up against it...
Also, it is not uncommon for moving ships to "overshoot" their target...by this I mean that they will fly at fullspeed until within weapon range, and only then will start to slow down, sometimes passing by or running into the target...for particularly fast ships with short weapon ranges (LFs and HCs), this is common, and the Kodiak's special ability only makes this worse...
