Gearbox Announces Homeworld, Homeworld 2 HD Remakes ***Feb 25,2015***

During a panel at PAX Australia today, Gearbox announced upcoming HD remakes of Homeworld and Homeworld 2. In addition, the studio will make original, unaltered versions of both games available digitally.

No specific pricing or release date for either the HD versions or the unaltered versions has been announced, but Gearbox head Randy Pitchford noted that a “small team” is currently hard at work on the projects at Gearbox.

Gearbox acquired the rights to Homeworld back in April from THQ. At the time, Gearbox chief creative officer Brian Martel said the studio plans “to preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games.”

It is basically Homeworld 2 Remastered. With a very well done Homeworld 1 "mod" added to it. That is the best way i can describe HW-RE.

Now understand they ported HW1 into the HW2 engine. So pretty much it behaves the way you would expect a HW1 mod for HW2 to work. Some things work very well. Others well.... They do not. Not to say that i am disappointed. I am very satisfied with how HW1-RE turned out. The visuals are brilliant. Does it have issues? Oh hell yes it does. It was ported into the HW2 engine. That should say something right there.

A patch is definitely in work for some these issues. Some of which include.

No fuel. Not really needed for MP. Though the Garden of Kadesh missions the Kadeshi "simulate fuel". That is Kinda broken right now. Not to mention the Kadeshi missions are bugged themselves. The Needle ships have a "Brave Sir Robin" AI, and retreat as soon as you attack them.. Therefore completing the mission with only a few shots fired.

Turanic Raider AI is broken. Carrier doesnt attack at all.

HW1 Formations, and Tactics are beyond broken! Especially sphere formation. Plus the ships do not hold any formations you select. They break up, and attack just like the HW2 strike craft. No matter what formation, or tactics you select. Basically you are better off using the HW2 formations, and strike groups (which are included in the menu). When i changed to HW2 tactics my strike craft performed better.

Armor values need a bit of tweaking, because in some mission critical objectives like saving the bentusi, or saving your own cryo trays end before the mission even begins! The spawned enemy ships tend to kill them before the cutscenes end. Especially if you build a large fleet in the previous mission. HW-RE uses the dynamic difficulty scaling of HW2. It was fun facing Heavy Cruisers in HW1-RE missions that never had them in Classic.

Heavy Cruisers behave, Have the firepower, and are just as tough as HW2 Battlecruisers.

Corvette behavior is borked.

Repair behavior is borked.

You can't band select salvaging. Though salvaging is a cakewalk in RE. You cant multisalvage. You basically have to micro your salvagers.

Some sound effects are questionable. They changed the gun sounds of some ships (like Interceptors) from autocannon like to "pew pew". Some of the "remastered" voice acting in HW2 leaves much to be desired. They should have just left the originals in there.

HW1, and HW2 Classic do not work without hacking, regedit, or praying.

The Good.....

Again the Visuals.. You cant deny the art work in HW-RE. It is absolutely brilliant. The HW1 remastered ships are spot on, and in some cases are more detailed than some of the HW2 units. The maps are brilliant.

The things from HW1 that actually Do Work in the HW2 engine work perfectly.

Homeworld 2 campaign is spot on (other than the horrible voice acting in some cases). Then again not much else really needed to be changed. The upgraded visuals just add to it. No issues to report in the HW2 campaign.
