Question on civil war

I wasn't able to participate in the beta, so I am curious regarding one game mechanic - civil wars.

Is civil war an event that can happen to the human player, as well as the computer players?

Can it be triggered by a player initiated event (like taking the capitol, in the original Civilization), or only be random events?

If a computer race (say, the Yor) have a civil war, do both factions use the Yor AI, or does one of them use the Yor, and the other use the generic minor civ AI?

And I suppose, I gotta ask, though its not really a civil war question - has anyone seen a minor civ win during the beta?

thanks,
Daniel

Or if their is another webpage/link (I couldn't find one) that already has the info I'm looking for - I wouldn't mind doing a little reading to get educated if someone can point it out to me...

I think it's impossible for a Minor to win... they can't expand out of their starting sector...

minor civ's stay in their own sector, they are there for us to use.. get tribute, trade with them, etc.. They are far too weak to conquer the galaxy.

It can defiantely happen to the "human" player. Being evil can trigger the splitting of your colonies into different factions.

I'm not sure but i think the split uses the a.i associated with the minor races

"has anyone seen a minor civ win during the beta?"
I haven't seen any minor race win yet. However there was a random event which caused the draginol (sp?), to pop up in the middle of my systems and wipe my entire fleet and defenses out. But i lost due to alterians (sp?) colonizing my worlds.

"I think it's impossible for a Minor to win... they can't expand out of their starting sector... "

This isnt entirely true from what ive seen in my curent game. I havent seen expansion due to colonizing from minor races, but i have seen, in my current game, the I-league swallowing up planets left and right from "mostly" The Yor. So in a way i guess that would be considered expansion.

"They are far too weak to conquer the galaxy"

I wouldnt consider the I league in my current game weak. If i go on the rating that occasion pop up,with 100 being a decent rating, and considering the military rating of minors races run along the same base line. The I-league in my current game had a military rating of over 2000 when they declared war on me and is currently about 1512 Thank god Peace was finally established, cause i was getting my butt kicked by The yor and the I-league. I guess my terror stars destroyering a few planets made a difference :D To bad they are so slow (:(

Minor races aren't supposed to be able to conquer the galaxy. They are there to be exploited and to create havoc.

There are major races, minor races, trivial races, and associate races.

We generally refer to anything that isn't one of the 6 major races as a minor race but there are subtle differences between the different kinds of minor races.

Minor races are there to be exploited. They can't expand out of their sectors. But they will attack outside their sector a little bit. They are created at the start of the game.

Trivial races don't even colonize or put up much of a fight at all. They are created randomly throughout the game. These are basically people who have left one of the major civs and gone off and colonized some marginal world.

Associate civilizations are a different kind. There are various random events that can generate them. The League of Non-Aligned Worlds is an Associate. They can invade other star systems. So can the Dread Lords. In fact, Draginol and the Dread Lords (to use two examples) CAN conquer the galaxy. But only if you let them get too powerful. They grow stronger over time. But they are both exceedingly rare.

Unless you play the game for a very long time, you'll never see all the random events. And we'll be adding a lot more over the coming months.

Draginol? Never heard of him, who's he?

In the diplomacy screen you can see pictures of the major races that you talk with. Do the minor races have pictures as well?

In some of the earlier betas the minor races could win the game! Now they're restricted from expanding. I've certainly had the dread lords defeat me and win the game in the current version.

Hmmm...wonder what would happen if you gave a Minor race
planets out of their own system? Something I gotta try! :)

Is the minor-race expansion restriction something hard-coded into the AI, or is it something the user can configure in a file somewhere?

It would be pretty cool if you could make the game more of a free-for-all like in Europa Universalis or Medieval Lords (an old favorite)...

"Draginol? Never heard of him, who's he?"

While we're on the topic of names we don't recognize, who are the Belua? It seems that almost every game one of the Major Races (Torians almost always) are at war with the Belua, who I have never encountered. This is even after I control almost the entire map. Just curious.

"Draginol" is another nickname for Brad Wardell (Frogboy on this forum, CEO of StarDock, originator of GC/OS2, etc.). I have seen him use it on a few forums of companies that sell or review games.

In the context of the game, the Draginol is a creature that can appear and take control of a system as part of an event.
