Random event ideas here...

Well here's some random event ideas we've had that we hope to put into the bonus pak. But we want to hear from you. What kinds of events would you like to see and if they're doable, we'll try to get them into the bonuspak and you'll be able to play them on the day the game comes out.

Here are some of ours:

#1 Galactic Plague. (Odds: 1 in 2000 turns or 1 out of every 5 games played).
A plague hits the galaxy with the effect of slowing population growth each month and slowly starting to actually cause a population crash. When this event occurs, a new technology appears available to all players. If they research it, the plague goes away -- for everyone. But it's very expensive so players can eitehr gamble that an AI player will go and take care of it or they can take care of it themselves.

#2 Ultimate Power. (Odds: 1 in 3000 aka 1 out of every 8 games played).
This is similar to #1 except it has a drastically different effect. A technologys hows up to STOP the ultimate power. For you see, as long as it's active, each month the major civilization that is weakest gets 5 points added each month to one of their 30 abilities. Some of those abilities are pretty meaningless but others are pretty important. So you can sit back and let them become hyper powerful or you can put a stop to it (or an other player can put a stop to it.

#3 Environmental damage - this is from a ST:TNG episode. Timespace is becoming damaged from the overuse of warp engines. In gameplay, you could set a fairly low upper limit on warp speeds for maybe 100 turns.

#4 Space Monsters - ya gotta have 5-6 different types of monsters!

#5 Galactic Alchemy - one race devises a method to easily create a previously rare & valuable substance, one commonly used as a measure of wealth (like gold on Earth), throwing the galactic economy in chaos. The developing race gets an sizeable economic bonus for a few turns, and then ALL economies take a big hit after the market is glutted. This effect lasts X number of turns until the galactic economy adapts to the glut (perhaps settling on a new standard for wealth).

#6 Religious Revival - a race undergoes a dramatic revival in one of its ancient religions. Due to religious fervor, the race gets fat bonuses in whatever areas you think are appropriate.

The downside is that the race views other races as heathens (including allies). All treaties are broken off and diplomatic relations are affected.

The crusading race, depending on whether they are good or evil, will redouble their efforts in pursuing cultural or military victories.

#3 and #4 you post are in the game already.

#5 is kind of in the game with economic boom and bust event.

#6 though coudl be quite interesting. You could have a renaissance for good, neutral, and evil (3 different events). So those civlizations would get a temporary boost.

#7 Galactic Solar Pulse - All communications and sensor readings throughout the galaxy are blocked for X number of turns. You only know what is happening on your home planet and cannot see enemy starships until they are in visual range of your home planet or send new orders to ships in transit.

hey, I'm just trying to get promoted! LOL

Here's one that might be tough to implement: What about an unexplained rip in the space-time continuum that causes the star systems in a sector to reposition themselves within the sector, either randomly or at least to a significant degree? This could really upset the effects of influence, culture and trade.

If you wanted a galactic effect (I would), then the "rip" stretches across the galaxy, affecting all of the sectors it passes through in a straight line. Now that would be cool to see your empire suddenly reshifted.

another rip in the fabric in the space time continuim causes all evil civs to be good and all good civs to be evil for a set number of turns, a la that old star trek episode.

#8 Alien Parasite (based on Star Trek Episode and Puppet Masters by Robert Heinlein)

One planet is infected with an intelligent parasite that controls the minds of its subjects. Production on the planet begins to drop (-5%, -10%, -15%, -20%)and then population growth ceases. Then communication with the planet stops. Parasite now controls production on the planet. Alien infection forces population to work on building defensive systems and scout ships. The scout ships spread the infection to other planets they visit. Visiting ships may (% chance) also catch infection or may identify source of problem (% chance)

Spread of parasite to other worlds can only be stopped by enforcing a blockade around affected planets and destroying infected ships before they reach other systems. Planets can be cured of infection only after researching cure and making a planetary invasion to apply the cure.

#9 Star becomes unstable. A random picked star becomes unstable this lets the civilization who controls the star system have a chance to research a cure for it which if you successfully do this event wont ever effect a star owned by your civilization again. If you fail to develop it or choose not to try the star will in x amount of turns either explode destroying all planets around it or will change type negatively effecting the planets orbiting it. Also if the star explodes it can negatively effect other systems on the sector.

#9 Gravitational Anomaly

This anomaly can be in the form of an appearing black hole, star going supernova, or some tech side effect. It's effect, if not countered quickly enough by a technology, is that all planet's rating shifts over time to n-1, n-2, ..., n-X (the X can be fixed or randomly determined). Researching the "tech" before a shift has occured will counter all shifts across the galaxy. Once a shift has happened the "tech" will stabilize all planets at their new level by nullifying the threat and letting the planets and stars stabilize in their new orbits. Another technology based off the technology that stopped the gravitational problems can restore star systems and their planets to their original levels. This second technology is applied per system and as such is researched by a race to apply to systems they own.

#9 Computer Virus (Odds 1 in 8000, 1 of every 20 games played)

Computer virus stops movement of all ships owned by affected race for 1 turn. Then virus leaves affected race and spreads to one its trading partners the following turn. Continually going from one trading partner to the next (even returning to the original affected race) until it reaches a race that has researched - AutoSensing Firewall (stops unknown computer viruses from penetrating information systems). Once the virus reaches a race with Autosensing Firewall it will cease to exist.

Thus this event could affect Race 1(turn 1)> then Race Yor (turn 2)> then Alterians 3(turn3) and then return to affect Race 1 starting the cycle over again. It will only stop when it reaches a race that has researched the Autosensing Firewall Technology.

One of the dangers in trading with another race is that your computer systems become exposed to their computer viruses. Races that do not trade with the affected race are not affected.

#10 Rise of the Machines

Maybe this is in the game already but i really wouldn't know. say you research some kind of super computer that has the ability to access any information in your empire and there is a certain chance that the computer will take over dividing your empire in half and next thing you know you have enemy ships commanded by robots that you have to fight off.

or maybe a borg like enemy where cyborgs rise up into power and start to take over all your planets.

also, what are the space monsters already in the game frogboy mentioned?

#10 Shadow Council- A small, shady, secretive orginization forms in your empire composed of powerfull business men, key military personnel, members of opposing political parties, and other influential members of society. Thier combined objective? To remove you from power by destabilizing your regime using subterfuge and sabotage and then to put thier appointed puppet in your place. These guys will do all sorts of nasty stuff. They will sabotage your military projects, cause unrest in your populace, attack your allies and then blame it on you, and pretty much do anything to screw with you and ruin your day. To stop them you have to find out where thier hidden base of operations is(not sure how this could be done) and detroy it before they bring you down to your knees. This random event would only have a chance to take place if your approval rating is low.

#12 Napolean Returns (Odds 1 in 10000, 1 of every 25 games played)

Dictator with incredible military skills and dreams of galactic conquest takes control of a backwater Minor Race after discovering secrets of advanced warship.

One minor race is now controlled by AI with Incredible Intelligence and evil alignment seeking to conquer the galaxy.

Minor race can expand beyond its sector and behaves like a major race. Minor race receives 1 advanced warship (at least 1 level beyond other races) and can build more. Through espionage minor race also recieves random number of technologies known by its trading partners or races that received tribute from it.

Okay, so the you thought you could ignore the minor races and soak them for their resources while concentrating on the 5 major races. Now, what happens if a minor race suddenly becomes a major threat and is ruled by a ruler of supreme military intelligence who has discovered the technology of an advanced warship, built a secret spy network to steal technology from the more advanced races, and really hates the race that has been extracting tribute from them.

Here are few.

1. Space Storm - Space Dust blocks a % of the sunlight and decreases the food production for the duration of the event.

2. Solar Eclipse - Darkness covers the planet for an extend time and creates panic in the populous that takes a certain amount of time to pass before they go about producing normally again.

3. Nova Effect - A star in a near by galaxy goes nova and provides the planet with greater food production but less reproduction of people. Or the other way around more likely.

4. Space Seeds - Mysterious seeds from space land on the planet that grow into massive food production gains, and gains in the defensive capability of the planet due tot he make up the material in the trees. This last till all the trees are harvested.

5. Geothermal Outbreak - Gains in unit production due to decrees in manufacturing costs, but an increase in food demand as crops take a hit during this time.

Extinction of Crops - Have a disease hit a certain crop or food production that wipes it totally out until more can be brought in from another planet and grow the needed item again.

That is enough for now as I am not sure having not played the game if any of these would work or not.

God, a lot of the stuff being suggested here sounds really awesome! If they managed to implement all this stuff then I don't think I'd see a boring game of Galciv, ever!

Alot of these random ideas are fantastical.. how about some semi-normal occurances? I`m sure things like asteroids are in - right? How about sun spot activity that affects crops and unrest?

Here is an idea - space monster swarm! Very rare.. a horde of space monsters would decend on the players like locust from a neighboring galaxy, destroying ships and colonies indiscrimantely as they try to fill their insatible their hunger for bio-matter. If the horde wasn`t destroyed they`d eventually buzz off as mysteriously as they arrived leaving a path of destruction in their wake.

#11 Are there wormholes in the game? How about the appearance of a new wormhole.

#12 Discovery of a single ship which may be of a class larger then the player is currently able to build -- could turn the tide.

#13 The appearance of a "Mule" type character as in Asimov's Foundation series. This creature could manipulate the polical and economic stablity between empires. Must be dealt with by assasination.

#14 The appearance of an "Einstine" type characher who's presence gives a tech research bonus. Must be protected from assasination by the emipire who recieves him.

#15 Some totally clueless extra-galactic race decides to blow up a planet to make way for a new intersteller highway.

#13 Osama BinLadin Reincarnated

On a minor world a wealthy sponsor of terrorists rules. Until his base is discovered and destroyed he will sponsor acts of sabotage throughout the galaxy.

The ruler of this minor race has an Espionage rating of +100% and and sponsors sabotage against all good or neutral races that have contacted his world. Evil races can anoymously contribute money to finance his acts of sabotage and avoid responsibility for his actions.

To stop the sabotage the player will have to locate the source of sabotage, invade the planet, and capture him before he escapes (% Chance) to rebuild his network of terror in x number of turns on a different planet.

News Flash 1: Terrorist Mastermind Escapes Capture in Planetary Survey Ship. Reward of 25 million credits offered for his capture.
News Flash 2: The Terrorist Mastermind was captured by Special forces and is now being interrogated.
News Flash 3: The Terrorist Mastermind killed during Planetary Invasion.

Of course, to increase the chance of locating this terrorist mastermind and capturing him the player will have to invest in espionage and security related technologies.

Asteroid Impact a large asteroid crashes into a world mostly destroying the colony there. Many buildings destroyed HUGE population drop and the planet class reduced. Planets with Planetary defense, System defense or the Omega Defense thing are immune to it.

Also could do smaller collisions that have lesser effects and maybe a planet cracker asteroid that just totally destroys the planet.

Slave revoult
For evil civs only
Our slaves have rebelled!
Planet's morale drops drasticly
Productivity and economy on planet drops
Has a chance of causeing the event to happen again to several worlds owned by the evil civ

Galactic Supernova: A whole milky way goes supernova and affects ours due to radiation in: All Research down for X turns, all food productions doubles for X turns.

Transdimensional Storm: All ship movements halved for X turns, all communication blocked for X turns, all races loose one Starbase.

Ray Burst: unknown radiation causes Evil races permanently gaining Galatic View and halves food production for X turns, Neutral Races doubles research for X turns but halves population growth for X turns, Good races doubles population growth for X turns but halves trade income for X turns.

Religic bomb: in an effort to gain control of an empire terrorists have developed a bomb to influence everybody's mind and when set off it can't be controlled and the effects influence the whole galaxy.
Evil races gain Galactic View but loose all trade and communications with other empires (for X turns?).
Neutral races double empire treasury and declare war on Evil races.
Good races finish current research in one turn and loose one researched item, unrest level doubles.
