omg this game is hard.. help please

first of all id like to say ive read as much as i can on this forum and on the guides on this page, but most of the stuff just concerns either warfare or experienced players...

im a n00b who wants to play the game STRICTLY by using diplomacy and trade... well the problem is that neither what i do, if i go trade or warfare i always loose, even on cakewalk difficulty with everyone including me as good aligned i cant win...

if i go warfare i get sucky economy and people hate me, and my research is seriously sub-par, in fact no matter what i try i always lie behind in economy and research, the highest i have ever been in economy was something like 44, and each time i get a uptodate message of my empire it warns me that im seriously behind in research...

if i go diplomacy and trade, someone always comes and screwes this up... i played a game yesterday with cakewalk difficulty and all races including me good (so they cant hate me because i would have a different alignment than them)... it was progressing fairly well, i got up my two first freighters and send them to those E.T looking guys, a couple of turns later the wars start ploppin in with the messages of the likes "your army is sucky now you die, grr, me strong, you not muahahah" (not an exact quote LOL )

help me please, i really suck at this, im always last on technology, military and economy, i always have the least influence and in the end, even though i have all kinds of moraleboosting stuff my planets start leaving because of my sucky cultural influence...

oh and one more question, how do i colonise several planets in one solar system? i only seem to be able to colonise one planet per system...

im sorry if this became a long post, and i hope someone can help me...

Send another colony ship there, when it enters the star click on the planet you want to colonise.

Your game strategy is normally tied to your starting picks. So if you want to go for a diplomatic startegy choose the diplo picks on the race setup screen. One pick you should always go for is the bonus to planet quality(PQ) as an increase in PQ will result in an increase in all over stats which is always good. Also your political party should be chosen carefully, if you are having trouble keeping your people happy go for the populists, if you are having trouble keeping your economy in shape go for the federalists and so on.

Also trade your technologies to the other races for money - this can go a long way to balancing your economy in the begining - don't go for one lump sum however. Try and trade the technology for x bc's for 100 turns - you get alot more money this way.

Hope this goes someway to helping you wipe out the alien scum :)

thanks for the help, just one thing though, the problem with my all diplomacy thingiemagingie is that i get such a weak military that people just doesnt seem to be able to keep themselves from picking at me...

What you could do that would help is research Defenders or Shields (Purple techs, and Shields are better). Then build the ships that come with them, Defenders and BattleAxes (BattleAxes are better). Then, put them on your planets by clicking on them like you would to land a colony ship. This raises your military rating, which makes the other civs respect you and will help your diplomacy. Hope this helps.

LOL LOL Nice reruitment pitch ABT

In my last four or five games I didn't build a single military ship until the game was almost over. The key to staying at peace with the other empires is to keep your diplomatic relations at neutral or above - give away influence points/techs/ships/money. Also try to make sure you have a big population and/or economy the AI will not go to war against a player just because they have a weak military - they have to be weak in other areas as well. The reason for this is simple, in GalCiv the winner of the war is not decided by who has the biggest baddest ships its who can replace them once the casualties start coming. It's a battle of economies. LOL

Anymore probs just post

I don't know what you are talking about, there is nothing about recruitment in that ;)

PoisonedAcid, Exar is also right about his policy. It can work both ways, and since you are just starting, I would recommend both. As you get better, you can edge away from military if you would rather. Just make sure to keep your strengths equal and do not let any of them lag behind, or the AIs will target you as a weakling.
Good luck, enjoy the game, and shout if you need help.

Yup. Definitely. Sound advice ABT.

One more tip for defence if you are having trouble is to make a beeline for Defensive phasers tech and you get to build the battlehammer which when in orbit around a planet can quite happily defend against much bigger capital ships like battleships.

Leaving aside the supposedly banned recruitment talk... >:(

If you check the "Strategies" tab on the left side and search out a thread entitled "Winning maso with no military" you'll find a heap of tips and discussion about using influence in the game. You need to develop an appreciation of which techs, trade goods and wonders ADD to your influence and cultivate these. Call back here with specific questions after you've checked the thread (or perhaps post directly there) and we'd be happy to help - there are several players here who really enjoy the influence game!

oh i got one more question... when i researched advanced trade it said +1trade route, how many trade routes can one have?

EDIT: oh and what does "maso" mean? i saw it in like every sentence in the strategyforum...

EDITEDIT: oh and which do you think is the easiest beginner strat? diplo/trade or warmongerer?

There is a maximum of 10 outgoing trade routes, no limit on the number of incoming trade routes. At least one UP event can add more trade routes for everyone, and at least one UP event can limit the number of trade routes for evil civs.

I hope this helps. :)

Masochistic - the hardest difficulty level, the AI gets more tactic and big bonuses to all abilities.

Think it depends on your own individual playing style, try loads until you find one which suits you. I personally go for diplo's and trade, maybe a war at the end to speed things up.

Poison - I was in the exact same boat as you a while ago, and here's the easy thing I did to help ease myself into not losing :)

#1 - Set the economic slider "spend rate" at the beginning of your game to 100% even if you're losing money. The most important thig is quick research and churning out colony ships. Therefore change your social production to 0%, and your ship/research to 50% each.

#2 - Trade often with thea aliens. If you have to trade 3 techs for 1, that's OK, to help you keep up.
However never trade for ship technologies. It's way too expensive and not worth it... the aliens will horde this tech from you. Research them on your own.

#3 - When you see the graph that shows the alines are getting way ahead of you militarily build several defenders at each planet until you catch up. They RESPECT military might.

#4 - Build freighters as soon as you can and start trading. But don't trade with someon you think you'll end up at war with.

#5 - Sell techs when you can... unless you're at war with the race.

That's a tough question: I guess the influence/diplo game can be played consistently, as the AIs don't react well to it all the way through to masochistic level. Thus, once mastered, it's a series of strategies that you can refine all the way to the hardest difficulty level. Im my experience, pure warmongering gets harder as you go up the levels, because the AIs get very significant advantages at higher levels and is more sensitive to military build ups - and it's harder for you to develop the funds.

I'd obviously advise you to play different types of gmaes at lower levels in your learning phase, so you can get the feel of it. As Geoffrey suggests, having a decent income is one of the key early objectives, and trading and selling techs to other civs are important ways to so this. Good luck!

Just a short addendum about how many trade routes - if you click on the "Trade" tab in your civs screen, it will TELL you how many you can have at any one time. Researching various techs (like the one you mention) adds routes to that list. ;)

I can only share my experience from playing at normal difficulty (every race set to normal intelligence). I like playing in a gigantic galaxy, and I haven't yet graduated to the higher difficulty levels most of this probably doesn't hold at higher levels.

My style is the same as I use in MOO2 - research bunny of doom. I also micromanage a lot of things, particularly colony ships and rush-build a lot of the same thing when I need a morale or economy boost.

My first task is to grab as many of the nearby good planets as possible, and research medical/communications until I get habitat improvement and trade. I go for the outer star systems first until and unless I run into another race, when I colonise the systems near as quickly as I can.

Once my first phase expansion is complete, I start colonising the secondary planets in my star systems. I will also colonise class 13/14 planets and rush-buy soil enhancement/habitat improvement. I buy these straight off, no leasing. When I get to trade goods, I lease-buy them and use them to either trade for money (minor races) or to keep the others happy with me. Freighters to the nearest friendly races both makes them like me and helps for them to act as a buffer zone between me and the more aggresive types.

Because I use Kryo's terraforming mod, and I choose the +7% PQ ability, I also start colonising class 12/13 planets not too long after my third phase expansion.

When my second phase expansion is complete, I build a starbase in each sector and load them up with modules, going cultural/mining/economic/defence/offence. I don't know if it does, but it certainly seems to discourage any aggresive moves against me. Any of my colonies not building colony ships build constructors.

I tend not to start building ships until I get BattleHammers, and even then only if I have an aggressive enemy near me. If everyone nearby likes me, I don't bother.

I try to keep the minors and friendlies alive by giving them techs that improve their ships (up to a point) if they are at war with one of the major powers. I also give them a few ships if they are doing badly, so they keep enemies occupied (and away from me). By the time I start building dreadnoughts, I'm usually near the top in manufacturing capability as well as tech, so I can outproduce and outfight anyone who tries for me.

Although I do play as good, if I get an evil choice that gives me a huge PQ boost, I'll take it, and then spend a few events earning back my lost goodness.

I like to play the powerbroker of the galaxy :) At least until I can start dictating terms with fleets of capital ships!

My last couple of games went well when I was able to grab nearly a third of the galaxy even before I ran into anyone else. The one before though went haywire when I ignored my "friends" the Altarians for too long and they wiped out a bunch of minors and the weak Yor and Drengin, turning into the strongest power in the galaxy from the weakest!

Like I said though, this strategy probably won't work on harder levels.

My next game is going to be evil warmonger I think LOL

Bribe the AIs into wars with each other. This accomplishes 2 things. It will help keep them from declaring war on you and it makes them more likely to trade with you by removing a potential trade partner. Click on the military graph to see who has the strongest military. Bribe them using cash/tech to attack others.

Sit back and wait for the freighters to arrive

For those who do not know where to look, the two succession games sponsored by the Realms Beyond Empire can be found at the following locations:

RBGC1: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=72311

The second RB succession game was/is comprised of three distinct teams with three goals. Team E and Team N have completed their games, and Team G is still slugging away. If you do visit, please adhere to our "no spoilers" rule, and do not post anything about any of the other games where Team G can read.

Here is the GalCiv thread about all the RBSG2 games: http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=127933

Team G thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76736

Team N thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76737

Team E thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76739

Reminder--DO NOT post anything about Team E or Team N games in the Team G thread or in any GalCiv forum thread. Team G is still playing, so the "no spoilers" rule is in effect for them. I cannot stress that enough!

If you have a specific question about something that came up in Team N or Team E's games, post it in that team's thread at Civfanatics.

I hope that our games and reports help those of you new to GalCiv!
