I believe that the visual data is not imprinted (as with most pictures). rather the items are given location and then downloaded.
its like: instead of taking a picture of dots and then sending the photo, the server sends you instructions on how the dots are created, so that it can work in three dimensions rather than in two.

they've been using 360 images since games came out on cds as far as i can remember. i seem to have a faint memory of a star trek interactive cd where you could explore the ship and it had a lot of 360 screens. there's even some 3d desktop wallpaper programs that do this same affect where your wallpaper moves depending on where the cursor is.

A big thanks to Keir over at the Eidos forums for the following battle information for tomorrows pending 360 demo of Battlestations: Midway.

Map: Islands of Solomon

Historical Perspective
Japanese forces occupied the Solomon Islands in January 1942. The counter-attack was led by the United States; the 1st Division of the US Marine Corps landed on Guadalcanal and Tulagi in August 1942. Some of the bitterest fighting of World War II took place on the islands for almost three years. Tulagi, the seat of the British administration on the island of Nggela Sule in Central Province was destroyed in the heavy fighting following landings by the US Marines. Then the tough battle for Guadalcanal, which was centered on the capture of the airfield led to the development of the adjacent town of Honiara as the United States logistics centre.

Controllable units / player slots:

Allied

Player 1 – Aircraft carrier with full compliment of aircraft (fighters, torpedo planes and dive-bombers)

Player 2 - Aircraft carrier with full compliment of aircraft (fighters, torpedo planes and dive-bombers)

Player 3 – Shipyard with destroyers, cruisers and battleships (2 can be launched at any one time)

Player 4 – Shipyard with destroyers, cruisers and subs (2 can be launched at any one time)

Japanese

Player 1 – Airfield with full compliment of aircraft (fighters, torpedo planes and dive-bombers)

Player 2 - Airfield carrier with full compliment of aircraft (fighters, torpedo planes and dive-bombers)

Player 3 – Shipyard with destroyers, cruisers and battleships (2 can be launched at any one time)

Player 4 – Shipyard with destroyers, cruisers and subs (2 can be launched at any one time)

NB: Players can share units. If you take player/slot one for example you are not always limited to just air combat – you can swap a unit with a team-mate and take command of a ship or sub as well.

In terms of the famous units involved; one of the carriers is the USS Yorktown and the Japanese battleship is the Kongo class I believe. There are also Wildcat and Zero fighters, Dauntless dive bombers and Avenger torpedo planes.

The basic objective is to destroy the opposing team’s carriers / airfields / shipyards.

The expected time for release of the demo on live is Times for the demo are: 15:00 GMT, 16:00 CET, 07:00 PST. with the PC demo due later in the week.

I was really looking forward to playing this demo on my computer today, but, it seems the wait has been extended a possible few more days.

was looking forward too, but the 360 demo is there, but not the pc version!!!!!11

This is an act of war man... ill tell the danish goverment to send all we got, over there. (10 tanks, 3jets and about 1000 troops)

"hearing the song: we will survive"

ive played the demo and its actually pretty fun....there are some annoying parts here and there mostly dealing with torpedo aiming and killing subs (its not easy to have a destroyer survive long enough to actually make it to a submarine hunt)

The full game will have larger maps so that shouldnt be a problem

The PC demo will be out around 10:00 AM EST today, looking forward to playing with you guys/gals.

Good grief! What a mess.

First the thing wouldn't connect, then I finally start to connect and it crashes. Restart, connect but am immediately kicked. Finally get in a game and the thing is jerky as hell, the camera feels upsidedown and backwards, my ships kept hauling serious butt.... but sideways, one of my ships spent the better part of the game trapped in the middle of the island (yes, IN the island), then the thing freezes. Had to go for a hard boot.

*shakes head in dismay*

I have not really experienced a single one of those problems (yet), and have been greatly enjoying the game thus far. The few problems in my experience aren't game breaking, and mainly can be resolved with the retail product providing a patch and tutorial.

For instance, the largest problems presently (for me) are new players refusing to look at the control bindings screen (or even adjusting them to their liking), and then expect every other player to tell them every key binding (causing a huge mismatch and burden in teams). The other being a issue with long timeouts on join attempts, which have failed due to the game room being filled during the join process.

Also, there is a few minor balance problems, and some seem to be purely demo related from the large surplus of ships and planes. While it isn't impossible, it is extremely rare to ever see the enemy depleted of the surplus, and mainly only comes up between two very evenly matched players/teams.

I wished the demo had a multi-player lobby with chat room and a friends list, a better default PC control scheme, and was a bit more of a realistic simulation of WWII (longer ranges, more damage, decreased damaged control efficiency). Other hand, cannot put the demo down from wake to sleep, and it is just to much fun for me.
