Suggestions

Have an idea or a change to the game you'd like to see? Let us know and we'll take a look at it.

Suggestions should be things that don't fundamentally change the scope of the game or require immense levels of development time.

We'll be monitoring this thread.

SLIDERS!!!

Is there any reason the trade sliders can't be as big as the other sliders (tax, spending, etc.)?

Also, all sliders should allow you to hold the mouse down on the arrow to make the slider move, instead of having to rapid-click.

3 Suggestions here, easiest to hardest:

1) Change the Colony ship graphic and name to Colony Fleet. This way no more arguments that one colony ship couldn't possible hold all those people. :)

2) Allow us to know, say 2 years ahead of time, what the UP vote issue will be. This way we can prioritize getting influence for trades instead of money. The AI should do the same if it's an important issue.

3) Starbases: Avoiding the no-brainer 'Infinite Constructor Sleaze' (ICS) or Crawler Avalanche found in SMAC to win --in large part-- by starbase scale instead of starbase strategy:

With the exception of resources, allow for the creation of starbases *ONLY* in the orbit of a colonized system.

BENEFITS:

1) Capturing resources would have much greater strategic value;

2) You'd be limited in the number of starbases you could build, which would help limit the 'effects of scale' currently somewhat easily done by building bases ad-naseum;

3) The AI would be much more likely to target these starbases around your system as opposed to 'not seeing' the mega bases tucked in the corner of a sector giving your defenders massive ability to survive wave after wave of attack. This, in turn, would give much more strategic emphasis to defending the space *around* your systems;

4) This would encourage colonizing otherwise 'worthless' systems thereby lending more strategic use of the map;

5) This would encourage building up your fewer starbases to maximum in a number of categories rather than having dedicated culture ones (for example) simply 'culture bombing' other sectors.

6) You could no longer 'push' starbases. You could only put them in a new sector once you've colonized a system there, lending more emphasis to actually using your military/colony ships.

7) This increased focus on colonizing more planets would help address some of the morale challenges of overcrowded planets and give you reason to keep trying to expand throughout the game.

8) As a potential side benefit, since the starbases would be in orbit of your systems, it would be much quicker to update the starbases with constructor ships (assuming the constructor isn't going to another orbit at some point, as it certainly will with later start-ups). This might help improve the pacing and decrease some of the micro-management associated with nearly endless constructor production and starbase updates.

9) Finally, add a cheap, early unit --outpost sattelite?-- to allow you to extend your range to colonize far off planets instead of using starbases for this purpose! :CONGRAT:

How about the ability to initiate a United Planets Council meeting involving whatever topic you want a vote on?

For example:
I have had the whole 'pay 3% of your total income' vote played against me, and would like initiate the vote to do the same to other powerful races.

I'd like suggest that the 'minor races' actually be made into 'minor' races. As it stands, in every game I have played some minor race has built the frictionless clothing and tri-strontium steel trade goods before I even have the chance of researching the neccesary techs to get those trade goods. On top of that in my current game I had to reload an auto-save because a stupid minor race built a wonder that I had been working on before I could finish it. I had to jump back and take out a lease to get it before them. If they are truly 'minor' races, then they should be unlikely to build trade goods at best, and they certainly should not be able to build galactic wonders at all. At the very least I'd like to see some sort of option somewhere to tone down the sorts of things that minor races are capable of doing.

Hi Brad,
I've noticed that later in the game the troop or colonist slider to launch a ship could not have the appropriate steps.
An example: a planet with 10000M citizens has the slider that cannot easyly be set to 100M. It goes stright from 0 to 350M or so. If you click on the arrows it moves 1M by 1M, so I have to click 100 times ... :(
Suggestion: if you click on the arrows while holding CTRL, it moves 10 by 10.

Epylepsy.
I've seen the warning in your readme...
I suppose not everybody did...
Why not to implement a switch that by default is on that allows to play just X hours (ask doctors...) and before beeing reset to anything else needs you to read the warning and...? :)

It would be really helpful to be able to see what races are contributing tribute to my empire - how much they pay and how many turns they will keep paying. It is very easy to lose track otherwise...

It would be great if espionage included features such as sabotage, assassination, etc. Then perhaps you could set up terrorist organizations that would wreak havoc on certain planets for a certain amount of BC dependent upon the action taken. Espionage should also affect destabilization, because c'mon, if you understand the structure behind the governments, then making it collapse would only be easier.

By the way, I love your game and the support you show for your community is truly amazing and unprecedented. It's truly a display of a great company and I'm certain that I'll be buying more products and recommending your products more than I ever had for any company.

I'd like to see 2 easy improvements that (IMHO) would enhance gameplay.

1) Have a pause key to view combats before, during and after they occur, this key could be toggled
[I'd like to see what's attacking me with the accompanying stats to see how I can counter that ship(s) in the future
2) Have a toggle to leave the mini-map on! to position anywhere on the screen (again toggled for player preference)
I feel this would eliminate some of the frustration of finding key areas and keeping an eye on ships as they move pass specific areas ;)

Two things which would cut down on the fiddling around in the game:

* a/ The ability to lock the economy sliders for military, social, and research spending.

* b/ The ability to set a target morale for planets, individually or empirewide, which would cut down on the need to go in and change the propagande slider so often.

For more discussion of those suggestions, see http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?BID=GF&id=38921 in this forum.

I am playing 1.02.040 and the most important thing to improve is still the way the AI gives money for technos, trade goods or diplomatic agreements .
For technos, it's easy, just look at old Sid Meier's Civ : pay less and less for a techno already known by more and more other civs.
For diplomacy, I don't know, but playing with "normal AI" I was able to get 2000 BC/turn for 8 turns to make peace with the Altarian. His treasury ended down at -13000 BC. Please fix that !!

NoNo
PS. Great game anyway.

Has this already been mentioned:

- Make a new 'sticky post' in which nobody can post except for some moderators (or even 'respected users' such as javascout). That post should be constantly updated to have a list of all (or the most important) suggestions in keywords. And maybe the suggestions on which work is done in a different color. This would make it easier for regular users to do a suggestion, without having to do extensive reading to see if a suggestion has already be made.

This is also possible for a bug list. Offcourse a small intro post explaining how to report a bug or suggestion (system specs, patch version, every step you did etc.) would be handy.

- What about a ctrl-1 and shift-1 and alt-1 for your most important ships, planets and starbases? Just an idea...

- An option to 'make war' in your diplomacy screen. And a 'break treaty' option would also be sweet.

Oh yeah... and did someone already mention that it is a great game?? ;p

I haven't got the courage to read the full 10 pages of this thread, so it has perhaps been requested before.

I'd really like to be able to localize anomalies on the mini-map. Sending a research vessel is very tedious at the moment, since you have to scroll through all your explored are to find where the next anomaly is... (plus the anomalies are not so easy to spot already on the main map)

Ok, this was brought up in another thread:
Bonuses for fleet attacks to avoid the 1 vs 1 “problem”. Frogboy already stated in that thread that there will be no stacking bonuses for attacking ships, but I was wondering:

Perhaps you would consider to give the attacker some bonuses the more ships he as surrounding the enemy vessel? So e.g. if I have 3 ships directly besides the enemy dreadnaught, the attacks would still be played 1:1 but the „fleet“ could get some attack or defensive bonuses...

Don’t know how hard this would be to implement, though…

On the ship list it would be nice to see on which planet the ship is. And also group the ships by their home planet. Oh, and the rally points for planets suggested earlier: sounds good to me :)

But as it is, this is the most addictive game I have played in a _long_ while, even though I still suck at it, but I'm getting better every day :)..
Beats the hell out of civilization and MOO3, keep up the good work..

A "lock slider" feature for the military, research and social sliders. :)

In the game save or load screen, could you add a screen that shows the options on your selected game. For instance, the difficulty level. I play multiple games and sometimes forget which game is on which difficulty setting.

Also, can you add something that tells you just how good/evil your civ is. Yes, the interface does change. But are you evil, or Demonic? Are you Good, or Saintly? (or does the interface change again and I just havent gone far enough in either direction?)

I'd like to suggest that the first UP meeting be delayed, so it doesn't happen practically on the heels of meeting your first race. Otherwise, you can find your strategy crippled in the early game due to bad luck (such as two games in a row today, where I was trying to play evil warrior race and getting UP votes that penalized evil Civs after meeting good civs first thing).

There's no way to mitigate the results of a bad early vote, simply because it's not possible to match the other civs' influence in the early game - they *always* start at an advantage and gain more when they encounter other empires.

Wayne, open up your domestic screen, go to the "Stats" tab then click the "Society" tab in the upper left corner. You will find your alignment (with score) right there. So it'll say if you're good, evil, or neutral, and the numerical (1-100) score.

I think that "demonic" means you're pure evil - that is, you always take the evil course. "Saintly" means you're pure good - that you always take the good course. In one game, I chose exactly one neutral option because the "good" option was simply too harmful in the short- and long-term for my situation, and I dropped from "good" to "neutral" interface, and it took awhile to get back to "good." My final alignment is listed on the metaverse as "chaotic good."

If you watch the chaotic civs (Yor and Torian by default) in your games, you'll likely see them shift to neutral on occasion.

There are those of us who have eyes that don't work like they used to, after all they are over half a century old!.

Is possible to change the color of the players star system on the mini-map. The current color (dark blue) is extremely hard to disern. I would love to be able to select a custom color or change the player's color to something more easily seen by us older gamers.

Thanks,

TDG

Ok. This might not take HUGE amount of time or anything, but will make the GAMEPLAY in regards to tech EASIER.
In Civilization you can look at the techtree and see how much a tech cost earlier and how much your new options cost. The techtree in the PDF manual is VERY lacking. Ingame there should be an option to look at this tree with it's available techs, how many turns based on current research, and RELATIVE cost of the older ones. In that way one can compare tech cost with other techs in a trading perspective.

I bought the game a couple of days ago. I love it. I have two suggestions, and I don't know if anyone else has said them before, I admit I am too lazy to read all pages.

1) When the planet production is on the main screen, I would love to have a minimap somewhere showing to me where the planet is! If I don't want to rename the systems I find it very very difficult to remember where is this system and now what?

2) This is a bit more difficult but, I don't like much how the battles are carried out with always the biggest ship winning. I don't know if stucked battles or something would solve the problem, I don't have an immediate suggestion.

ok, one more, not gameplay wise,

what if I don't have an internet connection and I need to reinstall the game WITH the patches and so on, is there a way to do it?

Is adding Online MultiPlayer and option for suggestion??? Can it be done??? :notsure:

Instead of just showing "AutoPilot" under ships icons, show "AP:XX-YY" where XX-YY is sector co-ordinates. That way if you have a couple of ships headed in the same direction and you need to change one of them (because a resource was taken etc) you can see which ship is headed to what sector.

Resources should not disappear on the mini-map once someone plops a base on them. It would be nice to have that information on the map so I can poke around them during times of war, rather than being forced to remember what sector that military resource was in.
