Still confused about Stardock Central...

I find this entire process to be very confusing and non-intuitive... however, I imagine much of the fault lies with me as most other Stardock users seem to be having no problems (not a caustic remark, rather an honest assessment that I just don't understand the Stardock Central concept)...
My confusion stems from the Drengin.net and Stardock Central sites... Do we need Stardock to access Drengin and therefore the "incremental updates"? Furthermore, if we don't download Stardock it is my understanding we will not be able to access "incremental updates". However, to access the updates from Stardock Central you have to click on the Drengin tab/link anyway, so why not just bypass Stardock Central and access Drengin from the GalCiv.com site? By going directly to Drengin from GalCiv, what updates/features will I not be able to access? In other words, what is the purpose of Stardock, other than a central location from which to access forums, Drengin, etc. My main concern is I want to be sure I have access to all updates, incremental or otherwise.
BTW, kudos to you Frogboy for creating such a deep, interesting game. The passion you have for GalCiv is obvious and both seem to be an extremely well-crafted game. Brings to mind the early years of Microprose when Sid was still full of vim and vigor.
