Sins Beta 1 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

Put your bug/compatibility reports here!

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 1.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 1 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock.net along with a detailed description as outlined above.

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 1 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=148255

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Wedge , what resolution are you playing at?

Delete your uimappings.setting file and reload. Something corrupted the file.

Yes that worked. Thank you.

edit: I would like to point out that the sound is clipped off at times (during fire fights). Is this just me?

Okay I've not been able to reproduce this yet - However at one point while sitting at the title screen for about a minute the game didn't crash but the screen went completely green. I had to reboot and that fixed the problem. I tried just leaveing the game running and walking away but it didn't green screen me again. At the time I had just changed my AA options to 4x and gone into the single player configuration screen and was fiddling with the options (bounty on and so forth) and BAM green screen - game still ran and Stardock's smart exception didn't get anything. So not sure what caused it - totally un-reproducible but it happened.

had the intro issue but that was easily fixed played solidly for 2 hours (i see addiction coming on)

no freezing, no crashing, had a problem changing the graphics option on resolution(stated above)it did resize on restart,

enjoyed the game but i did think that ships moved very fast is there a speed change option?

sometimes have trouble finding the construction ship i am very used to sup com when it comes to selecting units (guess i will have to change my ways)

could not seem to change ship names

the big pop up seems very big when highlighting ships

aside from that cant think of anything else this game looks good so far

I think I have a new bug here. Everything seems to be working fine so far as the game goes, but every sound effect seems clipped, especially with combat. The gunshots will clip in and out, explosions will clip in and out, and ship engine noises do the same. Otherwise, so far so good.

Athlon 64 bit 3000+ processor
1 gb RAM
NVIDIA Geforce 6600 GT

The game will go into a bugged up window mode when I change any video settings (and click apply). They still apply, but I have to alt-F4 out then re-run in order to get it to work. Also, without using the above posted fix, I can't get past the intros - just goes blank with the sound of the main menu. The mouse wheel zoom can get a bit quirky at times - zooming in slightly before zooming out (happens when the FPS goes below 20 mostly).

Aside from that, no problems in a 10 hour game (actually left the game running for 10 hours straight............ minus 20 seconds with the video options) on a large galaxy with 10 easy AIs. Very fun to play BTW! Good job!

My system:
Windows XP Pro (tweaked for performance)
P4 3ghz (overclocked 3.6ghz)
ATI AIW X800XL AGP (overclocked)
3gig DDR RAM
300gig Maxtor something or other HDD
Latest drivers and BIOS for everything.

Game runs great so far except for one thing. When ever i hover my mouse over a unit/planet/structure and the detailed window pops up i get a hit in FPS, it disapears again when i remove the mouse from the unit/planet/structure and returns to normal FPS wich is smooth so far.

Specs
win XP SP2
P4 3ghz
Nvidia 6800GT 256mb
1 gig ram

I get the black screen, and an almost immediate minidump report. I have to ALT+TAB out of the black screen it doesn't close automatically.

I have reinstalled the game once.

I have edited the C:\Documents and Settings\

When I zoom all the way out of one star system, then pan over and zoom in on another, the background nebula, ships, etc, don't appear. If I double-click something in that system via the empire tree before zooming in, then everything is fine, but the same issue will then happen to systems other than the one I picked an item in and zoomed in on if I try going back to them.

I fixed the extraction error by deleting and reintsalling Stardock Central.

In other news, The first time I ran this it crashed after causing a buffer overun in my wireless mouse software.

That is the first time that had ever happened to me. Other than that there is some sleight stutter on zoom ins, but I kind of expect that.

The first thing up is that I have seen that if I am zoomed in far enough to actually see my ships duke it out( as opposed the little colored icons), that fighters become weird triangular shpaed things that block out the screen. This has happened a few times, and a restart of the game corrects the problem until it happens another time.

This next one is more of a hmmm, then an actual bug. There isn't a mouse inversion switch. The way that the mouse is set-up is kind of irritating to me since I have been playing every other game out there. The vertical setting on the mouse is fine for me, but when I went to the horizontal, it made me check twice. I disliked it intensely and decided to change it, yet there was no option to in the options/user interface sections.

Please allow the player to be able to invert both the vertical and horizontal movments of the mouse via switches. Though it is not game changing, it is a irritating.

When I activate the game, the game shows the beginning movie, and then shows the title screen. It then drops to the desktop, but with this black screen in the upper left hand corner. I tried to change the showintromovies code to false, but it does not fix it.

Thanks for the great feedback everyone! I'll do my best to address a few:

could not seem to change ship names

the big pop up seems very big when highlighting ships

aside from that cant think of anything else this game looks good so far

The ship naming is in the game but currently disabled, along with some other goodies accessible from the orange button in the center UI. You will see these later.

Regarding the Pop up, I assume you are speaking of the info card the pops up from the bottom right? Could you please post your screen size and resolution. If anyone else has a similiar concern can you please speak up.

Yes, you are right. The elements within a system are currently triggered by the focus state of that system. We are looking into this.

This is on the list and you will definitely have this option in the future

Try running in windowed mode. You can also set this in the user.settings file.

I just completed a game, and while I'm having no graphical corruption issues, I did notice that if you zoom in to max detail when you're looking at a planet, you zoom below the planet surface, which causes the planet to disappear. Zooming out a little bit restores the planet surface.

Unfortunately my first post about beta has to deal with a crash, last night the game crashed with no warning of why. I had been on the game since about 12 hours, stayed up till about 5AM (wonderful game btw) I had isolated 2 worlds from the rest of my enemies empire i went and finished them and i zoomed over to them and started some construction. All was well as my fleet had just arrived at my new frontline ready to engage the next target in my campaign howver as soon as I panned down the audio jittered the screen went black and i CTD'ed   war over No exception generated it did mention something about a minidump but i wasnt able to find it. I have no idea how to reproduce the error or if its possible.

I set the ISWINDOWED property to TRUE, the result was different... I get a black window pop up for less than a second then nothing.

I also tried lowering my desktop screen res down to 1024x768 but that had no effect on SoaSE either.

I still can't run the game.

If you have an object selected/focused behind a planet and you zoom towards that object you will go right through the planet. We tried camera collision at one point, but came to the conclusion that it was too irritating to have your camera 'bump' into everything as you explored elements in the game. Good thing no monsters were hiding inside the planet

According to the tutorial, I should be able to queue up research once I've queued my Research Station to be built, but I wasn't able to in the regular game I've been playing. I had to wait for the station to be built in order to begin queuing research items, and even then there was a several (~10) second pause after the station was complete before the research icons undimmed.

Just had my first crash, game froze and the music looped, then up poped a little window with a icon of sins and name "MiniDump" in the windows task bar, i didnt do anything out of the ordinary, so no clue.
I was able to ctrl+alt+del and close sins, the minidump window went down withit.

I have smart exception on now, and wont be playing without it

You might not have had enough resources to buy the research topic right away. You can't queue up stuff until you can afford it (which I don't like btw...).

The tutorial worked find for me but the actual game, even on a small map, keeps locking up on me. Has happened in three games in a row and has occured between 20 minuits and and hour of gameplay.

I was playing with these graphic options:
1024x768
60Hz
2 samples
highest texture

My PC:
WinXP
Dual-core 2.8 Gig
1 Gig of RAM
Nividia GeForce 6200 TC.
