Sins Beta 1 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 1. 

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 1 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock.net along with a detailed description as outlined above.

I set the ISWINDOWED property to TRUE, the result was different... I get a black window pop up for less than a second then nothing.

I also tried lowering my desktop screen res down to 1024x768 but that had no effect on SoaSE either.

I still can't run the game.

Thanks to all the minidumps and reports from you guys we've tracked a lot of the crashes so far. We are likely going to be issuing a beta 1 patch soon. Hopefully, one of those fixes will get you going.

A little bug I found. When queuing training for capital ships I can queue it all the way up to ten. However, once it completes the first level of training the queue resets.

The tutorial worked find for me as well as a full game in a small solar system with 3 other opponents.

I was playing with these graphic options:
1680x1050
60Hz
4 samples
highest texture

My PC:
WinXP SP2
AMD OPTERON 170 Dual-core 2.0 Gig
2 Gig of RAM
Nividia GeForce 7800GT 256MB.

I have a 100% reproducable failure:

I load my saved game, in which a Jump Inhibitor is being built. As soon as the inhibitor finishes, the game crashes to desktop.

I have not tested this with any other save, nor have I tried loading any other games. If you need a copy of the save, let me know.

Crashed an hour after last save in the middle of a big battle (~30 caps, ~30 bomber squads, and an uncounted swarm of frigates... plus whatever the AI had), while assigning ability points to leveled-up caps. Dump here.

I am not sure if anyone else is getting this error, but all of a sudden when I am playing it try's to minimize the window and brings up a minidump error?

Athlon XP 64 3000+
1 GB ram
Geforce 6800 128 MB
1024 X 768 Medium Textures

I've been playing a little more. So far so good, I haven't seen any crashes or bugs. I'm still experiencing that odd audio bug, however, and there don't seem to be many settings to tinker with in regards to audio.

It happens mostly in combat, primarily with engine noises, weapon noises, and explosion noises; each sound clips in and out apparently at random. It gets very annoying over the course of even a short game.

I have a non-reproducible hard reset bug. It seems to occur in the late game during periods of high load, but not consistently. For example, I saved a game and then used the Missile Salvo ability on the dreadnought. I got about 4 salvos off then splat. But when I got back in i loaded up and salvoed away to my hearts content.

I'm operating at max settings. I can't say specifically what causes it, but I *think* it happens when zooming in, and sometimes the game starts stuttering slightly a minute or two before crashing.

There's no bluescreen, either... it just... resets.

I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware fault, I play lots of Supreme Commander and there's not much around that hammers a system harder than that.

My DXDIAG file.

I've downloaded SmartException and will give that a try, but from just looking at I don't know if it will gather any information if/when the machine resets.

Is there a game log or logging function I can use?

Maybe the game doesnt like Modest Mouse...

Also, when theres lots of fighters, they are occasionally not visible. I don't know if its that the fighters arnt rendering or if its just that their trails arnt rendering and they are hard to see.

The ship naming is in the game but currently disabled, along with some other goodies accessible from the orange button in the center UI. You will see these later.

Regarding the Pop up, I assume you are speaking of the info card the pops up from the bottom right? Could you please post your screen size and resolution. If anyone else has a similiar concern can you please speak up.

hi thats the one i think the resolution was 1280 by 800 (ish) on a 19" crt

one other thing that i forgot to mention (have not done the tutorial yet so it might be there) is that when i invade an enemy players system i cant seem to capture their structures it seems a shame to waste them all although blowing them up is fun!.

One compatibility problem I noticed was a follows: I was zoomed in close to a squadron of about 20 ships. I was observing them do attack a planet. At a point, the ships all fired at once, and a large number of explosions ensued. At this point, my computer completely froze, and I was forced to reboot. All of the settings were on default, except for the textures, which I had set to medium.

My specs:

AMD Athlon 64 processor running at 2.4 Ghz
approx 1.3 Gigs of RAM
128 integrated graphics card

I was able to reproduce the crash I had the other night, it seems to be linked to high traffic situations and attempting to zoom out. For instance in both cases there were high volumes of ships in this particular instance (On the order of 200+ from 3 different AI) and I zoomed out and crashed here is the Log.

I have the same problem. The font is way larger than on the screenshots or in Multianna's video. Texts overlap in the game menus, they run out of their boxes and even off screen.

The game runs fine now that I have it installed on my system, but I had a lot of trouble installing it in the first place.

I had downloaded the SoaSE Beta into an archived file. I needed to transfer the game to my PC at the cottage, as there are no High Speed lines out here (have to use dial up). Anyway, Stardock Central Archived the file in town without problem and I brought it here.

However, when I went to install the game on my gaming PC, Stardock Central keep crashing whenever I tried to open the archived file. After many panicked attempts, Stardock Central finally started the installation process without crashing. Not sure what the problem was, but I suspect it might have been my Zone Alarm stopping some process from running.

Just thought you might like to know.
