Sins Beta 1 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

Put your bug/compatibility reports here!

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 1.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 1 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock.net along with a detailed description as outlined above.

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 1 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=148255

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Had a wierd bug today, where the game would start, but minimized and maximized about three of four times when the intro should have come up. That still played though.
Haven't been able to reproduce the error.

When a capital ship is waiting for formation jump, fighters seem to have more trouble auto-docking.

You can see this happening here. The fighters fly into the ship without docking, then fly out again.

Statistics-keeping: I noted that for some reason one of my enemies managed to reach negative Squads. I don't know how.

Hi DeadlyShoe! Thanks for the heads up.
We are looking into this one, along with other related phase jumping/docking/formation related issues.

Bang, look at my post and the solution. I think you have the same problem.

sorry if this has been posted before but here goes:

i notiched some fps drops down to 20 when you hold the mouse over something and get the info bar. Thought it was because of fraps (making vid's) before. but now that im not, it still happens.

Since the patch the game has become stable on my system but the empire tree (or whatever it is called [left hand side of sceen) does not function properly once I have to scroll up and down in order to see everything.

The message was removed but they should still be working.

Was a mistake on my part. I went under Documents and Settings/Application Data instead of Documents and Settings/Username/Application Data No problems all my screens tucked away safe and sound

found a solution to fix it.
I had to double click on a planet and it returned

Hi, Using the latest patched version of the beta, i noticed that garda flak frigates would not fire if they were facing the ship they were targeting, the 2 fore and aft guns would fire independently at other targets, but not at the one i repeatedly indicated.

PS: I also notice that if you alt-tab out of the game, the game keeps going if you're not in the menu, perhaps it should automatically pause (so that my empire isn't ruined while i post on here )

I get the feeling that the game wont play more than just 1-2 weapon sound at a time, it sounds really bad. Although when you bombard a planet it sounds perfect, even with a lot of bombs. And I must say, the SFX on the bombs hitting the planet, AWESOME!!!

I noticed that when I quit the game, the process still stays resident in memory. Takes up about 20MBs of RAM resources.

Noticed this issue with both March 27 - v0.60.003 and March 29 - v0.60.004 release.
I can duplicate it whenever I quit the game.

Another comment. I was one of those who had the IntroMovies and Resolution bugs with the March 27 - v0.60.003 release. I did get the beta to work with the solutions listed above in this same thread - editing the user.setting file.

With the March 29 - v0.60.004 release I was hoping to view the IntroMovie, but it did not play. I even checked the user.setting file and the boolean flag was set to TRUE. Is there another solution to make the movie viewable?

Thanks for reading.

My PC:
WinXP
AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ (2GHz)
2 Gig of RAM
Nividia GeForce 7800 GT
All graphics settings at default except resolution @ 1920x1200

Sound (combat fx) is sporadic and choppy. It abruptly starts and stops, and will cut out at a certain distance from the camera. I'd be happy to provide a more detailed analysis later. I only had a short time to test.

Vinco's box:
Athlon64 3700+
Asus K8V SE Deluxe mobo
Visiontek x800XT AGP
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
1GB PC3200 ram
Running game at 1600x1200@70

Should be the latest drivers for vid and sound. At most 1-2 months behind.

I have the same problem as you Vinco

Just a thought - but see what fiddling with the Hardware Acceleration tab in Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio -> Advanced does.

I ran the initial beta without problems (it looks good!). However the updated Beta 0.60[b].004 does not even start. I do not get the black screen that other users report. I simply get the windows exception dialogue box with the message "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0150002). Click on OK to terminate the application"

I'm running Win XP with the latest DirectX drivers, 1Gb RAM, 3.33Ghz CPU and an ATI mobility Radeon 9600/9700 graphics card.

I've gotten the sound stuttering now, but only during truely massive fights. (dozen+ capital ships, literally hundreds of fighters, etc.)

Got a crash at the conclusion of a fight... no minidump. Here's the SmartException:

and here is what my text looks like

I was able to solve this problem here at last. The fonts' internal type face names were changed to match their file names - but unfortunately only for "Englisch (American)", language identifier 1033. For all other languages they remained unchanged and I would think that all people with a non-US Windows will see the large fonts.

Apparently only SoaSE needs those names matching while all other programs, like Word and several other applications, can work with the fonts out of the box. So I opened the main font file "SinsAgencyBold.ttf" with a hex editor and changed the internal German name "Agency FB Fett" to "SinsAgencyBold". All is looking smooth now.

I was lucky though, as both names have the same lentgh. I don't now if it will also work when the localized name is longer than the file name. It will definitely not work when it's shorter.

tried to open that in a hex editor, but I couldnt find any Sinsagencybold line.
or maybe I did something wrong.
The internal font names are in Unicode, i.e. 16 bit characters. So it would read ".S.i.n.s.A.g.e.n.c.y.B.o.l.d", with the dots representing 00hex characters.

If you are not familiar with hex editors you could also use a font editor, but all freeware programs for Windows have vanished.

There is also a somewhat tedious solution that should work with a normal editor. SoaSE has a folder called "Font" in its program directory. There you can find about 30 files "*.font". When you open e.g. "ButtonLabel.font" it reads

TXT
Font
BEGIN
Height 18
TypeFaceName "SinsAgencyBold"
END

You can set the TypeFaceName variable to your Windows font name. For the German Windows this was

TypeFaceName "Agency FB Fett"

When I tested this I got an error box that SoaSE couldn't find the file "Agency FB Fett.ttf" but it started nevertheless and at least the menus had the correct font. I think that one needs to change it in all *.font files, but that seemed to tedious for me and I came up with the hexeditor solution instead.

I'd guess that Ironclad will soon fix this problem - either with new fonts or by using a more, umh, "Windows compliant" method for loading text resources.

Any else unable to load save games now that you updated? I get to 1/4th and the sound cuts out. The game goes to sleep except however the mouse still will move. If I alt-f4 I get a cool crash.

If I click load, alt-tab away and wait a few minutes I get a cool text box asking me to skip / Skip All / Break.

Any of these buttons generate a minidump.

Trying to load a save from before the update will cause a crash. I've had no problem loading post-update saves myself, though.
