Sins Beta 1 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

Put your bug/compatibility reports here!

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 1.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 1 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock.net along with a detailed description as outlined above.

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 1 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

As it states in the readme and on my mirrored thread on the forums, previous save files will not work with the new version.

Expect this to occur for all new versions.

The internal font names are in Unicode, i.e. 16 bit characters. So it would read ".S.i.n.s.A.g.e.n.c.y.B.o.l.d", with the dots representing 00hex characters.

If you are not familiar with hex editors you could also use a font editor, but all freeware programs for Windows have vanished.

There is also a somewhat tedious solution that should work with a normal editor. SoaSE has a folder called "Font" in its program directory. There you can find about 30 files "*.font". When you open e.g. "ButtonLabel.font" it reads

TXT
Font
BEGIN
Height 18
TypeFaceName "SinsAgencyBold"
END

You can set the TypeFaceName variable to your Windows font name. For the German Windows this was

TypeFaceName "Agency FB Fett"

When I tested this I got an error box that SoaSE couldn't find the file "Agency FB Fett.ttf" but it started nevertheless and at least the menus had the correct font. I think that one needs to change it in all *.font files, but that seemed to tedious for me and I came up with the hexeditor solution instead.

I'd guess that Ironclad will soon fix this problem - either with new fonts or by using a more, umh, "Windows compliant" method for loading text resources.

This is correct. Sins hasn't been localized in any regards yet but will be before release.

Sound (combat fx) is sporadic and choppy. It abruptly starts and stops, and will cut out at a certain distance from the camera. I'd be happy to provide a more detailed analysis later. I only had a short time to test.

There definately appears to be a serious bug affecting some people's sound quality and sounds getting cut out during combat. We're narrowing it down

Hi, I've been trying to get the beta patch .06 004 through Stardock Central. I don't get the option to download it. In fact, my Stardock Central doesn't even acknowledge that I have SoaSE beta installed.

I think this problem is likely related to how I installed SoaSE beta on my computer. I don't have high speed right now, so I had to download SoaSE on another computer and archive the install file. I transfered the file to my computer and used my Stardock Central to install the game.

I should note, that my Stardock Central crashed several times before it took and actually installed the beta. Still not sure why it had so much trouble.

So, any suggestions on getting the patch and figuring what is wrong with my Stardock Central?
Okay, I reinstalled Stardock Central and then reinstalled the archived Sins file (this time without any crashes). Now I can update the beta to .61.009 without problem.

Maybe my older Stardock Central install was corrupted somehow.

Noted Research Error:
Repair drone upgrade tech says will upgrade speed from 15 to 20 per sec and then 20 to 25.
Repair Dock module already repairs at 20 per sec, when researched once it ups to 30 per sec after the second it is rated at 40 per sec.

Also, researching the tech caused a 'string not found' error on my machine, i was able to skip it, but the tooltip for the repair dock has a small yellow 'string not found' line at the very bottom... no idea what should go there, as all the other information is present. The error only occured when i moused over the repair platform's ability icon.

Hmm, i seem to have a problem for when sins closes.
I was woundering why the pc was using 100%, sins is still as a running processe.
And when i close it down, every other thing in windows is using 100% like the calculater or notepad lol

Only way to fix it is a restart

I built a Repair Station and when I clicked on it, I encountered the following error.

Failed to find StringID: 'IDS_SUPPORTABILITY_REPAIRTECHPLANETMODULE_NAME'. NOTE: Any following StringID failures will be supressed.

I had researched increased repair speed as well.

My system specs are

Windows XP SP2 (including all recent updates)
ZoneAlarm Security Suite Firewall/AntiVirus
P4 3.2 (Hyperthread enabled)
1 Gig DDR 3200 RAM in dual channel
2 Hard Drives in Raid mode
7800 GS AGP video card
Asus P4C-800-E MB

With the latest versoin, I suffered a sudden CTD that did not generate a dump and was not even caught by SmartException. Thoughts?

Incidentally, I noted some whiting out of textures before a recent reset-crash, which brought me back around to a hardware problem. I underclocked my video card and havent reset since. I don't know why SINS would cause that though, since no other games do. Maybe it's a texture memory thing.

In my current custom game, which has four stars (if that matters), I jumped a Scout to one of them, but it was nowhere to be found in the star's gravity well. It showed as a pip in the little half circle around the zoomed-out planet, and also as a pip in the Empire Window, but it can't be found in or around the gravity well of the sun, nor is it in the expanded list for the sun in the Empire Window. I never noticed if this happened in my other games or not.

First off, I agree with the majority of the people that say this has the makings of a great game - please don't screw it up.

The "Load Game" screen when in single player mode has the scoll bar going up out of the screen to the top edge of the monitor viewing area. I had 2 saved games and was reloading one of them.

I'm still getting my strange audio bug. The sound clips cut in and out for all engine noises, gunfire noises, and explosion noises. When moving a regular Arcova Frigate, for instance, the engine firing up noise goes once, cuts halfway through, then starts again, cutting halfway through, then does the same thing a third time. Weapon sounds and explosion sounds are a touch more sporadic, but the effect is similar.

I can play the game fine so long as I shut off all sound effects; the clipping in and out drives me crazy.

I'm running:
Windows XP
Athlon 64 bit 3000+
1 gb RAM
Geforce 6600 GT

Sound is from the motherboard; Gigabyte K8-VT800

Another user mentioned having this problem, though he had a standard soundblaster card.

First of all, this looks like it is going to be a great game. I am running the 009 Beta 1 now.

Here are some of the problems I am having with beta 1. Sound - everything will be running fine for awhile, then suddenly I notice the music is gone. I still get the battle sounds, ship sounds, etc., but the background music is gone. I have not been able to tie this to any specific event or thing I am doing yet, but I will try to watch for that.

Also, I have had mouse related problems. The zooming in and out is sometimes jerky, and sometimes it suddenly jumps in or out depending on which way I am moving at the time. Usually, as I zoom in and come to a stop it will suddenly jump back out a step immediately after I stop zooming. By a step I mean the amount of zoom relative to one click on the mouse wheel. I like the way you have the zoom set up ... either zoom towards a selected/attached ship or zoom to the place the cursor is pointing, but it should be a smooth consistent zoom, and it should stop where I stop it.

Simply moving the mouse across the screen sometimes results in sort of a hesitation by the cursor followed by a sudden 'catching up' with where it is supposed to be. I noticed that when this happens there is also disk drive activity. The drive LED lights up when the mouse cursor hesitation occurs. You might think this is a problem with my mouse or computer, but this does not happen with other recent games or programs.

Also, panning or scrolling up and down is not working with the mouse (haven't tried it with keyboard). I have set the horizontal rotation to inverted, left the vertical rotation at default, and now I can only scroll left and right with the mouse.

I have also had one CTD and one game lockup for which I emailed data files to [email protected]. I assume since I emailed those you do not want them repeated here.

Win XP Pro w/SP2 and all MS security updates
Athlon XP 3200+
ASUS A7N8X-E mobo
1 GB RAM
GEForce 6800 Ultra AGP, 256 MB RAM
Sound built in to mobo
Logitech G5 Laser USB wired mouse
Swap file 4095 MB on C drive
All drivers up to date except graphics is one step behind

I really loving this beta so far, thank you guys, this is a great beta.

A few of things I have noticed...

1) I have a Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard which has the option on it to disable the windows button so that you don't accidentally pull yourself out of a game. However if I press the windows key while its disabled on the keyboard the game remains on the screen, however it will not respond to any commands. I can scroll around the universe but it won't accept any command input. Pressing the windows key again fixes it (not tested with the latest patch).

2) Asteroids which can be colonized glow an unhealthy white-ish color as if they had been covered in clear nail polish (tested with the latest patch).

3) When zooming into an Asteroid I see the main asteroid and all the mine-able ones in the area, however if I click the main asteroid a bunch of small decorative asteroids appear, floating in space around the area, if I zoom out a bit they remain (using the mouse wheel) but if I zoom in (mouse wheel) they disappear until I click the main asteroid again. I have not tested other methods of zooming to see if the results are the same (tested with the latest patch).

4) The new soft lock of the camera is great; I can pretty easily see what I want to now. One small issue though, if you hold down the right mouse button to rotate around, your cursor will eventually hit the edge and while this does not cause scrolling it does cause me to lose camera lock so I cannot fully rotate around an object without losing the camera lock (tested with the latest patch).

5) The colored influence lines that expand from an empire will sometimes expand past a planet/asteroid appearing to pierce the object and jut out of the other side a bit, the extra bit coming out the other end will then quickly fluctuate, becoming shorter and longer, to see this, zoom into a planet or asteroid which is being affected by influence but do not select the planet/asteroid as viewing the gravity will negate this issue (tested with the latest patch).

6) Should we be commenting on A.I. behavior at this point or save it for Beta 2 or 3? There is nothing game breaking; they can just display some odd and often suicidal behavior.

One quick question about when we suffer a CTD and the message appears asking us if we would like to send the log to developers. When I click yes, does that send it to you, or do I need to email it?

Posted in the "beta update" thread but might as well post it here to i guess.

with March 31 - v0.61.009 version of the game i have stuttering in the game whenever i move my mouse. This happens no matter where in the game i am. From in game to menus. Its the first time ive seen it and the 2 previous versions ran flawless.

Windows XP SP2
P4 intel 3GHz
Nvidia 6800GT 256MB
1 GB RAM

Actually the lines going thru the planet will extend past the grav well if you have enough 'culture influence' pushing at that planet. i think it has to do with the rate of increase. but in some games i have played, the influence will be visible poking past the grav well when it is selected also.

AI opponents still seem to occasionally get infinite trade income even when cut off from the other AIs. (tested with .61 009 patch).

Ships still run into each other a lot which takes away from the game. (tested with .61 009 patch).

I notice that my ships weapon fire passes through each other (especially the KOL beams weapons), which really takes away from the game (tested with .61 009 patch).

In regards to the repair platform error. it seems to occur when you click on the platform, regardless of whether you have researched the speed or not. it seems that the 'fluff' text is missing or misplaced.

Every time i load this game Save file 68mb
the game crashes after 1min and makes a dump file.
Oh and does it send the dump file automatically?

could a user try and DL the savegame and see if it works for them?

Save files will tend to compress nicely in a zip file.

This is a save game created with 0.61? Not an earlier build right?

Ok, I did a bit more testing on this one last night. Its not just asteroids its the little details (i.e. mini ships flying on the surface and little decoratvice asteroids floating in space) on all the planets. They disappear and only re-appear if I click on the planet. Zooming with the B and N keys (I think those are the ones) do not affect the graphical details. I can zoom in and out and it all looks great. Once I use them I can then use the mouse wheel to zoom and they will remain. This is only the case for the current planet I am looking at though. If I go to a new planet, its details will be missing, if I click they appear and if I zoom in (in only, out doesnt affect it) with the mouse wheel the details will wink out of existence until I click and then zoom with the keyboard commands. Also if I click the planet to veiw the details and then mouse lock with the M key I can then zoom in and out and all around with no issues.

I can provide a video if needed.

"could a user try and DL the savegame and see if it works for them?"

I would like to know this too.
