I figured since it is inevitable, I will start a thread to get ideas out on a star wars mod. Who will the sides be? What will the map look like? Units? Tech? etc.

Okay so if you are wondering if I am going to make a sins mod, the answer is I won't be able to make it myself!

I am going to provide support, I have tons of resources (obviously the models, but they will need to be tweaked)

so what am I going to provide:

lots and lots of content (some new some old, we'll see what works)

Website http://warlords.swrebellion.com (the current warlords website) which contains the blog, gallery, forums, bug tracker, ftp etc, if necessary it can be moved to another site, but I've got everything setup already

Ideas about how to implement things in the game (general development concepts)

A lot of the scripting and importing will have to done by others, but I will be looking into the art pipeline and how to work out some of the model importing bugs.

I know that this has already been mentioned, but is it possible to put in the Yuuzhan Vong in the mod? I dont know much about modding so I dont know, but I doubt that you can put worldships or dovin basals in a mod.

We could maybe look at how Empire at War did it's galaxy map. They were split up into several different maps.

Go to barns and noble and look at the map in the New Jedi Order Books its much more accurate.

anyone care to make sure this actually happens? I really have to be honest my day job is a 50 hour a week timesink, I really won't have a tremendous amount of time to do a lot of work especially tweaking stuff.

Someone will eventually take the project lead. Everyone wants a star wars mod in any space game available and I am one of them.

I am sorry to hear that you might not be the leader, I loved Warlords for HW2.

Sins can handle more planets than that (someone created a 10,000 planet map already) but its a question of whether your computer can handle it or not :P

not really a matter of leading it, in fact I want to, I just need people to help me. Warlords was a one man effort really, I did get some very helpful support from time to time, but in the end, nearly every file and nearly every model was completely done on my time.

Star wars mods would be cool but i dont think there is enough variety in star wars ships to make a SINS mod... even in EAW its just star destroyer + hero + frigate = shoot space station

Maybe the EAW modders will hop onto this game and we might get something. In a way they are similar so they might actually do it. They just need some motivation.

I think you are mistaken, EAW was just pathetic in terms of capturing even the most common vessels, warlords has roughly 200+ unique vessels already modeled and textured and I have at least another 100 to go if I want to do everything, granted some of them are one off references or are just art without names, but there is a tremendous variety to go with before you hit any sort of fan created designs. The situation is similar to trying to do a star trek mod, there are VERY few ships in the movies, but when you add in all the tv shows, books and games there is a large variety to choose from.

The main thing that will be a problem is the research tree, unless the intent is to say that you are a growing independent power in the galaxy you would have very few upgrades to research (since all of the tech is pretty much available and well known)

This was actually the reason warlords was started back with the old game rebellion. The research tree and upgrades made little sense if it was alliance vs empire like in the movies, only after the empire fell did it make sense to have warring factions that needed to build up and research things (New Republic vs Imperial Remnant and the warlords)
