Seriously, a new galaxy is desparately needed.

Let me start of by saying how utterly disappointed I am with the galaxy in the current version. If there were to be a model of the galaxy that would be the least realistic ever designed, this would be it! PLEASE NOTE: this is my own personal opinion and I hope no one is offended by it.

My suggestions would include, short of a entire redesign; the nixing of the phased jump lanes, inclusion of solar orbits for planets, inclusion of planetary orbits, inclusion of moons (following planetary orbits), inclusion of asteroid belts, inclusion of radiation fields around the sun, inclusion of gas giants, inclusion of nebulae (some w/ radiation fields), and modification of planet placement such that it realistically reflects known physics and astronomical facts and theories.

...oh wait, that is a full reconstruction.

come on guys, i've followed this game since I saw it in my issue of PC Gamer!! this beta proves it to laughable!!

don't betray the trust I gave with purchase of my pre-order!!! save Sins from itself!!!!

Its not a galaxy, as galaxy's dont really have suns in the middle of them. Its more of a solar system, It was just given the galaxy look for fun I guess. The devs have already stated, Game play comes first, not realism.

The galaxy (or solar system) could use some help. But it doesn't need a complete rebuilding... more jump lanes, moons/anomolies would be a great start!

note, this isnt a sim. while I would wholy apreciate it meeting those statements, it wont appear to work that way.

give me a break... you cant judge a game purely on how realistic it is. I mean come on, nobody would play video games if they were purely logical

logical

Exactly.

Also, having the star systems look a bit like a Galaxy will be useful for some modders. We just might mod the system star so it is a black hole, and 'pretend' the planets are actually star systems in their own right.

It's just beta 1 !! We want that all.

That would be good. Only one planet shows up in system, because that is the most profitable one to colonize (Would explain why it shows one planet per system. >.>)

matty_p, if you despise this game so much, maybe you should've considered doing more research before pre-ordering. Most of what you asked for has already been discussed, some of it long before your PC Gamer article. For example, the realistic placement of planets has been shot down several times since the beta came out. It simply does not work. Players know where to go to get the good planets, and a player that starts off far from the belt of preferred worlds gets left behind.

perhaps i should've researched more because i seriously feel like i wasted my money, and this is just the beta! oh goodness, i wonder what terrors the final release will bring?!

seriously, if there were enough 'good' worlds, each layer could get one and the other planets could be spoils for the victors in the battle for supremacy.

this 'we' nonsense is also keenly annoying.

...i just hope the modders can salvage this.

matty, you're digging yourself a very tidy little grave. we here at the sins forum cling fanboyishly to our Devs.

and besides, have you even played the beta? its actually fun despite them claiming wildly that they've witheld massive amounts of... stuff.

if you wanted a galactic sim, then you came to the wrong place. we're here to have fun, not recreate what we already know will fail.

Sigh, Matty_P, your aggressiveness in this post makes it hard for me to say I agree with you in that I too would like orbiting planets, gas giants, moons, asteroid fields, radiation belts, nebulae, accurate solar and galactic models and so on. I ESPECIALLY would like open connection maps.

Keep in mind though, that SOME of what you mentioned might even make the final release...if not, then it will be included in the engine to the point that it can be modded in

So, by all means offer constructive criticism, thoughts and ideas. But try to be a little bit more positive in your approach.

you're right. i've been far too aggressive. i apologize to the community here and to the developers. it is within my right to criticize, but i have been doing so in a manner that is both caustic and nonconstructive.

i do think the game is fun, but it's simply not what I expected. Forgive me if i have offended anyone.

No we dont, facing reality is best for everyone, tell it like it is matty, fanboys who are afraid to make themselves unpopular and wont give it to the devs straight are not doing anyone any favours.

I have to tell you MoO3 BB was full of that kind of bigotry before the big flop.

While I agree it could look a lot better, what you have to bear in mind is that the devs may consider the game is aimed at a younger audience than you or me, so they might think its OK to have planets that look like Christmas cracker toys . The game play is suitable for mid teens and above so they might be looking at that. I dont know, I am 42 so I tell it as I see it and I agree with you but I know I may not be the kind of customer they are aiming at.

Personally though I think the way it looks will put people of all ages off and has the potential to be much better without completely reworking the engine. I have said what I think on other threads which have said something similar to yours.

Jams solar system thread.

Paradoxnt's phase lane thread.

My Celestial Icons post.

I cant believe the devs dont understand what we are getting at (I am sure they do), they may have changes planned in future betas. On the other hand they may decide not to do anything about it. We can only speak our minds to help them decide what needs doing.

On that score, personally I think you do best to design games or art or anything for yourself, because if you like them then other people will like them, unless you have peculiar taste. If you design them for some imaginary other, you will not please anyone. So I would just ask the devs to do a thought experiment and consider if they were buying this game to play for themselves, what would they think about the way it looks ?

Hehe, well said booly. I am 36 years old, and a University Graduate (my focus was on 20th Century military history).

Anyway, I've been waiting years for a space empire game with the features Matty_P is asking for. I hope that the developers realize that there are quite a few of us older gamers who crave and appreciate high levels of realism and an in depth Galaxy.

I have to admit some fear that Ironclad might be aiming for a more casual type gamer with SoaSE. That would be a disaster, since it doesn't matter how appealing they try to make SoaSE, these gamers won't be interested and will not buy the game. The only gamers they should be targeting, are the guys like us. We represent the bulk of their buyers in regard to this game type.

Oh, when I said the "guys like us" in the above post, I meant SciFi gamers who prefer a decent or greater amount of realism and in depth background.

So please no responses about how younger gamers like realism and in depth games as well, as I included all of us in my statement.

I've always preferred Inclusive language over Exclusive.

you haven't payed attention to the forums at all...
I'm one of the most sarcastic fellows about the game, but I intentionally avoid insulting the Devs. in fact I would appreciate all of the things you mentioned (maybe excluding planet orbits, as that could get insanely confusing) but going around on a soapbox just doesnt work.

im 27, do i go into the category of an "older" player?

I agree as "old" as i am hehe i also like more realistic, things in games.
When i read some reviews about sins some time ago, about its solar systems. There were talk about asteroids. That could be mined for resources. My first thought was it would look like we know about our own solar system.

I have no idea if that demands more powerfull machines to run. But IC is aiming for lower end machines as i understood it. So this could be a limitation for it to be possible.
Yup Multianna, you are definitely in the mature gamer catagory. It would be neat to see how old most of the gamers who are interested in Sins are.

As for powerful machines, I think IC needs to aim higher and deliver more. Hardware is always getting better and will catch up quickly and the game is still a ways from release anyway.

By the way Multianna, I always enjoy your posts.

LMAO, but thank you

True, i wounder if they are thinking about using more cores like dual core. (i think i remember Blair said, no to that, but im not sure)
Supreme Commander was one of the first games i saw that could use 100% of my p4 hyperthreading, since that is a "fake" dual core. Im sure more will be using dual cores in year. Im getting a quad in a few days myself so no worrys. But there will still be people, with lower end machines, like schem.

But i agree it would be more additively to watch, if moons travel around its main planet. Seeing asteroids floating around too. Like in our own solar system.
Watching battles like BSG, star trek or like the "nexus 2 trailer"
But all that sounds very hardware demanding, and i wounder what IC has in plans.

One thing is for sure, the detailed graphics is what that sells to most people. Then comes the gameplay.

But with the "august" release, alot can happen until then.

amen.

...as for the talk of shemales, i'll be the first one to say this: I'm a she-elf. Dwarves fall over me left and right.
