Dawn of Victory (DoV) is a modification currently under development by Slipstream Productions for the RTS Sins of a Solar Empire. Dawn of Victory is a total conversion, replacing the game's original assets with completely new and diverse ships, structures, and gameplay elements. Dawn of Victory pits players as one of 3 intergalactic superpowers: the Democratic Federation, Greater German Reich, and the Soviet Union. These three factions wage war amongst themselves even as a greater threat, the Scinfaxi, threaten them all.

Story

While Dawn of Victory started out loosely based on Harry Turtledove’s “Worldwar” and “Colonization” book series, since then, the backstory has expanded to the point where it has taken on a life of its own.

For centuries an alien race known as the Scinfaxi had been the dominant power in the Orion region of space, their slow but steady expansion brought them into contact with dozens of other races, each one conquered and exterminated to provide the resources and material necessary to support the continually expanding empire.

 

In the 14th century, the first Scinfaxi probes reached Earth: it was surveyed, catalogued, and the plans were meticulously laid for its capture and assimilation. However, the Scinfaxi concept of time was very different from humanity's, and so when the first ships of the conquest fleet arrived in 1943, they were stunned to see Terran society had progressed to an industrial state in an unimaginable sliver of time. The initial landings took humanity by surprise, as the Scinfaxi advanced upon every continent.

It was in this darkest hour that what once divided humanity now brought it together, as the old prejudices were put aside and every free nation on Earth united against the alien aggressors. The tide turned in 1945 when the Soviet Union detonated an atomic bomb on its own soil, destroying a Scinfaxi landing site.

 

With the total conquest of Earth impossible without destroying everything of value, the Scinfaxi retreated to the Southern hemisphere, content with half the planet. Decades went by with no contact from the Scinfaxi, but as humanity grew bolder, the aliens' plans accelerated. As spacecraft from the last free nations made landfall, and eventually colonized new worlds, the Scinfaxi slowly began to advance. City after city was lost until, in a final act of desperation, the various Terran factions agreed to pursue a literal "scorched earth" policy, sacrificing their remaining positions to nuclear bombardment and quarantining the planet.

 

Humanity has expanded to the stars, and dozens of planets and moons now belong to the remaining Terran nations. There has been almost no contact with the Scinfaxi, and the former nations of Earth have become so complacent with their apparent safety that the old prejudices have returned and they once again war amongst themselves. The Scinfaxi are still expanding however, and it is only a matter of time before they decide to stamp out the potential usurpers; if humanity is allowed to advance another hundred years, it may be human soldiers landing on Scinfaxi worlds. The dawn of victory is approaching: the only question is which side will claim it.

It seems like we've definitely hit our stride for the last couple months. Hopefully, with summer coming, we can get a lot done and update on a more constant basis.

Hey, neat idea! Have you thought about using Red Alert 2 unit voices for the Soviets? Or the classic HM2 song? Cause I can definitely look at the Migs and hear them say "We will bury them!"

OK, seriously, what about the sounds, voices and music in the mod? How much thought have you given it?

We'll make our own assets. Sounds, voices, music etc are very very low priority at this point as opposed to gameplay. We have some offers for voice acting though so they should be good.

This mod is still looking awesome (I've just been looking at this thread from time to time, not posting). Any ETA? I wish I knew the main story better... I just know the basics of it.

I actually haven't seen much of the NATO side but what i have seen intrigues me. Are they gonna be included in the update at all or are you guys still pushing or a Soviet/German release?

From what I have seen around the sight, the focus is on the Germans and the Soviets. The DF (Democratic Faction) and the Scinfaxi seem to be taking the backseat.

First release is very much pushing Soviets/Germans, then DF and possible Scinfaxi, then the minor ones. It's a matter of both priority and historical accuracy, the Soviets and Germans have had a border war well before the Scinfaxi came along. So each release should be staggered so that it follows the story. :)

ETA is sometime at the end of this year, but it may well be earlier or later. There's no real way to estimate this sort of thing and I hate timed release dates.

I am looking forward just to updates through the summer, and the hints that they will happen more often with everyone having more time. I seriously hope so. This game looks to be the greatest thing ever crafted.

We will see more updates right? Of Glorious Germany? I could care less about the communists.

Excellent, The Greater German Reich will soon fill the skies!

Seriously though, I love all your guys updates, just wish they happened more often.

Also, I'm sure you can't give many details. But have you found a way to increase the number of ships? Not physical amounts, but the limit on say 5 different capitals, or 4 different cruisers?

Hey, I want updates on the Democratic Federation, me being a fan of freedom here, unlike Einlanzerous, who is a fascist pig. (Just Kidding! ...... I hope). Anyways, how are the factions going to be different from each other? Its kinda hard to have a Soviet Union in space without geniuses to make it happen, and everyone knows Communism is brutal on smart people (they tend to disappear). The Federation will probably revolve around elite troops and excellent equipment and weaponry, with the Germans being heavy and slow and the Feds being quick and damaging. Communists will most likely be a spam fest, as they basically were during WWII (anyone seen Enemy at the Gates)? So basically, I think the Federation will use elite, well-trained troops to apply hurt in critical places using tactics, the Germans will blitzkrieg everything in their path, and the Soviets will never run out of cheap piles of junk to throw at their opponents, but that's just me. As to the Scinfaxi, they are an even more painful steamroller than the Germans, with a horrible early game and hideous research speed to slow them down but the biggest, most powerful late-game known to man.

And that's my 2 cents.
