buying your enemies' ships...

i wanted to try a REALLY quick game, so i set all the ais to intelligent with a small galaxy for my second game. i had massive boosted diplomacy skill. in the diplomacy screens i get the "they consider us gods" and the "these are not the droids you're looking for" report.

anyway, by horse trading i traded a few techs to the one race, to get more techs from another race, and then sold them all to the minors. eventually in the middle game, my one sector empire was at 9000+ in the treasury at one point. eventually war was declared by the neighboring drengins. after a short time they wanted peace. so i gave it to them. then i was mischieveous and saved the game, then bought all their battlecruisers ships AND a few of their transports. so i conquered their outermost planet. then they asked for peace again. so i did that, then bought the frigates they had bought in the next planet, and attacked them again. i didn't have enough troops so i couldn't take their planet.

i did the same with the arceans, and eventually they gave me a small gift of money. (about 60) it was funny because the map was about 70% arcean yellow. the other nations except the drengins gave me small bits of $$ too, because i had the biggest military fleet i think.

should there be a tonnage limit to how many ships you can buy from another empire, especially the one you were at war with the turn before? even if i was diplomatically talented and got rich?

the ships themselves were parked right over the enemy planets. most were able to fight except a few that had to autopilot in stasis back to my one sector empire. even the transports were full.

I don't think any Empire should be selling large percentages of their ships to another. Each A.I. including you should have an option to set how many ships they are willing to sell or trade at any given time. This limit could be determined by an algorithm for the A.I's that determines just how many ships they can get rid of and effectively still be able to defend their empire or support their overall goals. Other factors in this alogorithm should include how aggresive you've been in the past, if you were recently at war with them and what you did with the ships you got from them during your last exchange if there was one, i.e. did you attack them or someone else not long after.

I also think there should be some limits to how many ships you can buy... It makes no sense for an empire to hand over all their ships to their worst enemy... especially twice...

I don't know, I think it kind of funny that a smooth talking emperor might be able to hoodwink a couple of races into doing this not once but twice ... seems like there's a story there somewhere.

Have you tried the same strategy at higher AI intelligence levels yet?

at higher levels they reject the trade and will even ask why so you can attack me again?
also everything changes depending on your diplomacy skills and thos of the race you're trading with.

(Hint) trading diplomacy teachs is very good in the short run but not so good in the long run
