Sins Beta 2 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 2.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 2 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock(dot)net along with a detailed description as outlined above. If Sins generates its own crash report, please follow the instructions on the dialog that pops-up (if you send in a Sins-generated report, you don't need to send in a SmartException one).

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 2 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=155665

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Another few - technical I guess:

Creating Shipgroups with the right CTRL-... does not work,
this is a GER keyboard with ENG Layoutmapping under WinXP

I have some Game-Endscore charts where the Listing for "Frigates" goes from -120 some to 191 - and two factions have negative scores... Savegame available;

Maybe feature maybe Bug:
A game that has been going for more than 24h switches to x-24h;

Another one (thought only a small graphical glitch that shouldn't happen too often):
When Credits go beyond the 1mio mark, the text/score slightly overlaps into the icon
- but that won't happen tooo often.

Bug or Feature?
Navigating any ship in the gravwell of a STAR does not really work - move-orders can only be given my selecting ships insystem as targets, otherwise Jumps will be assumed.

Cheers

Unsure if this is a tech problem, but for most of my last game the fighters/bombers I had grouped with my no. 1 fleet (love the fleet grouping options) would not attack any one, even when I specifically ordered said attack. I eventually realized that this was occurs because the entire fleet, fighters included, was set to weapon range only (to prevent my ships from dying in front of cannons). Either fighters/bombers shan't have this option, or, at the least, it should prohibit following my attack orders.

During those hours that they wouldn't fight, I could move them, but they still wouldn't attack in the new position.

I also don't think fighters/bombers should be able to fleet up themselves, rather fleet their carriers. I have tried many time to move my ships out of harms way (still in system), while still wanting my bombers to attack, and every time I need to reorder their attack. This way my fleet can move, my bombers can bomb, and when my fleet jumps, they will still dock up.

Fighters and bombers not workin when set to weapons range is a known bug i believe.

Grab your fleet while its jumping or preparing for a jump to avoid fighter troubles.

I have proposed in the past the fighters and bombers shouldnt be drag selectable if theres any ships in the selection, i think it disappeared down the black hole of the forums tho

I have noticed a couple issues, both to do with clicking. If any objects are near where your mouse click for placing an orbital structure is, it will default to auto placement, even if your placement was valid. This is irritating, since then i have to hunt down and scuttle the auto'd module.

I have also experienced that ships at some systems and especially at stars will take clicks in the gravity well to mean that i want them to jump to some planet not in the gravity well. Dey is crazy. Rotating camera is usually enough to reissue a valid order.

I've noticed some very tiny graphic glitches when playing. once I saw a metal asteroid icon for a split second in an undiscovered territory, later I scouted the territory to find it was a dead asteroid.

also I've seen various objects vibrate on screen until zoomed away from and back in.
these arent huge issues, but they ruin continuity in game.

Hi I'm having the same problem as uglycow, the game freezes and I have to use task-manager to get out of the game and then back into the game where upon the game unfreezes. One interesting thing that I've noticed is that when I've used TM to get out of the game, Vista displays an error message that the display drivers had temporally stopped working and that they are ok now. Next time I encounter that message I'll write it down word for word and post it here.

My system specs are,

AMD Atholon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4600+ 2.40 GHz
2 Gigs Ram
Nvidia 7950 GT
Onboard Soundcard
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit edition.

Hope this helps,

Regards

Raven

It seems you are not the only one who's ever gotten that error, it has to do with the Nvidia drivers and Vista... You're just the first to see that error while playing Sins

What driver version are you using?
I've just downloaded and installed the very latest nvidia driver. As I haven't had a problem with the driver in the past with other applications, I hope I wont have that problem now with my other applications. Driver version is 158.24.

Its Vista, of course you will have problems

MULTIANNA , what Nvidia drivers are you using with VISTA ? Might help if Raven-sb tries the same ones...

Well I don't want to make this thread go off topic by debating the virtues or lack there of of Vista, but I do have to say that this is the first and only problem I've had with the OS since I picked it up when it was released. Every application and game I've run has worked great, even those that other's have said they've had problems with under Vista. Anyway I'll continue to test Sins under the new Nvidia drivers and report back any problems I encounter.

I just had a random crash (not a big deal, it happens in any game) but it got me to thinking:

It would be nice if there were a quicksave button (unless there already is ) and an autosave feature which saves over itself ever 10 minutes or something. This crash made me lose over an hour of gameplay because I forgot to keep saving.

Ok I can confirm that the freezes occur with the Nvidia drivers 158.24 Interestingly enough no other application on my system is effected by this, only SOSE Beta 2. I was able to run Beta 1 with no problems.

I'm not exactly sure if this is a technical or gameplay problem, but it seems that when I killed one of the computers the game registered them as dead and gone, but their ships remained and were able to take an asteroid from another computer, and when they did this, they were considered alive again.

autosave is in the game, but you have to edit a file to activate it... i forget which file it is too

Reproducible crash bug: Selecting individual fighters/bombers and then assigning them to a fleet will cause the game to crash.

The research tickers no longer work. If you don't know what I mean it's those tickers on the left side of the research window.

I have Vista and even if I change the security settings for c:\documents and settings\ it still denies me access to that. All the allow boxes are checked down the line for "everyone", "(me)", and "system", but the operating system will still not allow me to even view anything in that folder. I do have administrative access on my computer and I do have it so is shows all hidden and system files. So at the moment there is no way for me to tell if the autosave is even working and I certainly can't change it even if I were able to see the file.

How come this file isn't put in the regular documents folder with every other game?

Microsoft no longer allows game files, or any program-generated files, to be placed into My Documents. Everything from here on out goes into the Application Data directory.

MazonDel - What video card do you have on that PC?  I get this as well on my home PC with a Radeon X850, but don't on my work PC's Radeon X1900.  Ironclad's been unable to replicate this also last I heard, so any details you can provide would be awesome.

The repair bays "repairing" incomplete structures bug is still present in beta 2.

This has been reported already but I'll mention it again anyways. Hoshikos will chase trade ships (or any other ship) through phase space to use their repair ability on them.

When you click on a ping notice on a planet that you haven't explored yet the camera moves there and darkens around the edges... it almost seems intentional but it kinda freaked me out when it happened the first time.

Probably known, but empires' culture "lines" remain long after said empire is defeated. Moreover, can I get a quick clarification of culture. I think it helps with the tax inefficiency from planets far from capital, but unsure how exactly (what advantages/disadvantages) and if thats all. Also, is the inefficiencies from distance or number of jumps?
Culture provides a tax bonus and a hull repair bonus or conversely a tax penalty and hull repair penalty. Tax inefficiency (aka Allegiance) decreases with number of jumps.
culture still confuses the heck outta me...

Yes, there's a 'fog' effect when you try to look at a system you don't have any sensor coverage on.
