Sins Beta 2 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 2.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 2 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock(dot)net along with a detailed description as outlined above. If Sins generates its own crash report, please follow the instructions on the dialog that pops-up (if you send in a Sins-generated report, you don't need to send in a SmartException one).

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 2 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=155665

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Haha. Running windows on a mac is no different that running windows any p.o.s. box you can pick up at dell.

The entire reason bootcamp is needed is because the BIOS has to be emulated--Windows does not support EFI.

Yes, this is correct and so far there has been no impact to any other software I have run. If you think the problem is relating to the emulation of the BIOS and not worth looking into then by all means disregard my post. Windows will go EFI eventually and I guess at that point you can look into it.

Looking forward to beta 3.

srry to bugg you but i recently purchased the beta money takin form my account i have reciept but no email sent to me regarding the download link i tried contacting sales but no reply:( plz suggest sumtin?

What you're seeing is a temporary hold on the funds put in place by your bank, not by us. This should clear in a couple of business days.  It's just your bank making sure you have the money to pay for the charge when it goes through.  Your card will be charged when Beta 3 is released in September and you'll receive another email then with a serial number.

Conserning saved game location Vista 64.
I run my os files on a raptor 35GB hdd.
The auto saves in a large game quickly built up about 5 gigs of saved games files, which would be fine for my 500 gb gaming drive, but not for my smaller os drive.
I suggest a save file location manager in the options menu.

BTW

System:
4gb 800 mhz ram
core 2 duo 2.40
8800 gtx
Vista 64
Intel DG965WH mainboard

Played with sins for about 15 hrs so far, no crashes or stalls, Ran game 1600x1200 max options and it ran perfect. Have some gameplay ?'s/sugestions but will post later

More info:

Current save location is:
Local disk\user\username\AppData\Roming\Iron Clad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\
Ugh.

If it was in save games directory i could at least move it...

Such is the new requirement to use the Games for Windows logo.

As kryo stated, the save location is now dictated by Microsoft and cannot be changed by us.

K, drifting ships.

I thought this was fixed but these ships didn't attack back (they just stood there for 2 minutes and then jumped). This was a hard AI so I don't get why they didn't do anything.

Also, these three scouts were not in phase jump, they were just outside the gravity well. After destroying 1 the other two jumped.

"Failed to convert HUDICON_ABILITY_PHASEDISRUPTIONTECH to an enum value"
I can still start a game, though I haven't built a phase jump inhibitor. Also, based on only one try, the game lagged for a few seconds when I clicked to build my first capital ship.

Yes, I did do a complete re-install.

Arrow keys dont work at random and when used they make a sound, like if you were clicking a botten.

First star in the empire tree is cut off by 1/3

botten = button

I think this is technical. When you start a game, you have to choose single/multi player. Then, if you want to load a saved game after you've chosen single player, the next screen has you choose single/multi player again. It's kind of redundant.

Does this in both the older version of b2 and the 8/30 patch. Is there a bugfix/feature list for the patch, BTW?

Ah, I see, I think. I'm not sure why one would want to play a multiplayer game save as a single, that kind of defeats the purpose of multiplayer. Unless the AI plays a stronger game than some humans.

Found the release notes, thanks. Does the explore REALLY do anything? Out of 5 planets I haven't found anything, yet. Seems like a waste of credits.

Absolutely There are a number of useful artifacts waiting to be discovered. You are taking a risk, but it could pay off!

insane slowdown found

When i zoomed into a fleet that was in phase space the FPS got very low, even if i zoomed out from it. It stopped when they exited phase space, and the FPS went back to normal.

A) Did you make any changes to icons, or to when ships change to icons? It feels different somehow, more confusing.

B) I can't right click to get rid of the building "painter" -- I have to hit escape, if I right click I set a new rally point for the system instead.

C) The text from the whisper bar needs to get enlarged (at 1280X1024, at least) to be more legible, its so small its hard to read. Or at least (edit: It might not actually be the size), its not spaced right or something. I have to lean in to read it, and even then its difficult.

i agree on those 2 points.
C) im running at 1680x1050 and its unreadable.

Fleet movement is worse then before, now fleets cant jump at times, as they are stuck between eachother (looks like there butts are clued togehter ). Savegame can be sent if needed.

From the changelog:
-Pathfinding now calculates the best path based on travel time instead of distance, so it will now factor in the travel time across a gravity well in relationship to the travel time in phase space, creating smarter routes.

Now they take 5 (or 4 i forgot) jumps instead of 2. Im not 100% if its faster, as the 2 jump way they have to travel inside a suns grav well. The 2 jump looks faster, but as i said im not 100% sure

The sun is a major slowdown - they will usually avoid it. Send the save games with descriptions and we'll take a look at them

How about adding a countdown timer to remote sensors, so I know when they're gonna lapse?

And, on the AI front, the sensor in question is observing an enemy planet about to undergo pirate assault. The AI has a largish fleet, sitting in a nice, pretty orbit around the edge of the gravity well, as if it had just jumped in or something (though the angle is totally wrong for any of the existing phase wells, and the formation way to spread out for normal jump formations, but you get the idea). Either the enemy fleet is doing something really weird and useless, and that needs fixing, or (not sure if this is better) its aware of the incoming pirate assault on that system (and has been for a while) and has the fleet waiting to intercept... but hasn't bothered to place the fleet in an advantageous position for combat, i. e. carriers to the rear near either the planet or the "escape" jump points, close up ships on the jump point, LR ships sitting off it ready to help out.

Edit: And explain to the pathing AI that heading through enemy held systems to get from friendly system to friendly system -- or from star to friendly system -- is a really bad idea unless its absolutely necessary. Edit edit: This is really important... I managed to stop *my* fleet before it got blown up, but the AI is gettings its fleets buttocks wiped by taking a shortcut through my space. Bad idea.

Edit: And while its a minor bug, weapons fire (especially planetary bombardment) still "stacks" up graphically if you forget to pause when you minimize the game to answer some chat window, or browse the forums to mention some really annoying bug.

If you select all ships in a sector using the small bar that's next to it when you zoom out, you can add allied ships (ie - not yours) to a number group.

I think the shortest-time travel method needs some tweaking.

it needs more of a bias towards less jumps.

I was going to take a screenshot to display a problem with the jump system, but i discovered the save is crashing.

Woo.zip

Woo!.sav causes SINS to simply stop working ( have to ctrl-alt-del).
The autosave included works normally.

DXdiag for my vista install:
dxdiag.txt

anyways.. the jump problem:

I'm trying to send ships from the asteroid staging base to attack the practically undefended Terran planet to the west, Rodari. Red route is what the game chooses. It goes through a heavily defended terran planet. Yellow route is what I did. Not only does it avoid defenses, but the routes are close enough together than my ships only have to turn in place to make the second phase jump.

I get this too... tried reinstalling twice. I also tried deleting the sound, but that just makes it crash.

My arrow keys make the sound, but still work for scrolling.

I have a technical issue thats REALLY annoying... and save game persistent!

In one system of my empire, many of my buildings / ships have gotten bugged so that the distance from which they stop being displayed as icons is not the point at which the models start showing up -- I have to zoom in even further than that. Which is, for obvious reasons, a really nasty bug.

Edit:

Oh, and do porous / dense core actually change the gravity well of the "effected" planets?

Yep. I had a porous asteroid and the entire build radius was the size of a single gauss cannon's range.
