Schod Schod

should the cruisers have guns?

should the cruisers have guns?

lets see...

take a step back and do some straightforward analysis.

Frigates are obviously the military meat. they provide both the stomach and the muscle of the TEC armada, their focus is on damage and elimination of enemy weaponry.

Capital ships are about providing powerful backup and damage, including the marza incendiary shells and the Kol railgun. ships such as the dunov and the akkan provide backup while the sova is purely fighter support. these ships are meant to become the powerful forward weaponry of your battlefield meant to eliminate, enhance or protect key ships or broad forces.

the role of Cruisers is pretty damn obvious. their abilities are far more mundane than the powerful capital ships, however their relative cost allows far more of them to be produced making them perfect to spread ship enhancements over large forces.

I've really had it up to here

with the whining that "cruisers suck".
yes, they arent exactly offensive based. but if you are fielding them as forward forces meant to provide a stronger arm than your frigates, or a more mobile force than the cap ships, you are getting what you deserve!
if you use the cruisers correctly you will find that they are quite the godsend. just dont mistake what their purpose is and you'll find out how really good they are.

they are far from perfection, but when used correctly they are well worth the investment.

I was wrong and you are right. I looked it up. They were about 8 knots faster on average and were specifically designed to be faster. They had larger engines just to accommodate that feature.

I didn't know that.

Did a bit more research and they were only 4 knots faster in the "dreadnought" era which is when they were built. Which is closer to what I thought the difference was... I knew they were a little faster but didn't think it was much.

Still they were designed to be faster and were given extra large engines for the purpose. So you're still right... I'm just not as completely clueless as I thought I was...

I think that they should just split crusiers to light (more specialist, less pawerful) and heavy (more powerful than best crusier now). and this is all

The one thing that I don't quiet get in this game is the distances are not being exploited. One thing that is really neat about the concept of space battles is that real ones would happen at extreme range. And would have to use some kind of lightspeed weapon (or faster if possible) or guided missile. Tactically furthermore the ability to dodge or hide would probably be better defense then any kind of armor. If we can put a nuclear warhead into a basketball sized sphere then any missile could be a nuclear warhead... and nothing but crazy impossible armor is going to do crap against that. So what you'd want to do is dance around the enemy... not give them a target. It would probably be more akin to submarine warfare... only the "torpedoes" would travel perhaps tens to hundreds of thousands of miles before finding their mark...

At any real range, light speed weapons become difficult to use because the enemy is likely to move out of its path before it arrives. Which is why missiles, in some form or another, are the "primary" weapon of most "serious" sci-fi tales.

and nothing but crazy impossible armor is going to do crap against that.

You'd be surprised. I don't understand the details myself, but nuclear weapons are a lot less effective in space, without atmosphere to amplify their effects. Of course, given the sheer power any space borne weapon is going to have, armor's role is going to change from negating damage to absorbing damage. Instead of making the vehicle capable of deflecting and ignoring incoming fire, its just going to put itself in the fire's way first -- your armor will blow up so that the rest of your ship doesn't.

Well yea. But would this be fun? I don't doubt that it would be fun for some of the more hardcore gamers, like me . But conventional wisdoms seems to say, that your usual gamer can't be bothered to understand more complexity then pong and won't read the users manual anyway, thus rejecting everything that takes more then 5 seconds to learn.

they could still noob 40 ships right at an enemy and pound on the keyboard like monkeys and win if they put it on easy... that's what easy mode is for... hell... that's what normal mode is for... then on hard you change the game mechanics a little bit and let people shadow dance around each other.
