Metals Vs Crystals

Greetings.

I've been exploring sins beta 2 for some time now and I find the game to be very nicely done.

There is one particularly aspect, however, that is a bit off in my views and that is the production and use of the 2 side resources, metals and crystals.

Most things require both, more metals than crystals, a few require only metals, but... there is way too much metal or way too less crystals or both.

I do not mean asteroids, those are more or less equal, but I always found myself with an overabundance of metal and a chronic dependency on crystals. So much that metals has just become the trash resource to sell to the black market for credits, cause I've never be out of metal, I run out much much sooner of credits or crystals.

I would suggest to tone down the metal production (or tone up the metal costs) and to tone up the crystals production(or tone down the costs) a bit so that you could have deficiencies of both and you would not have a "trash" resource.

Of course my experience is limited, but that is what I found out so far.

I'm not trying to take over your thread but its also worth mentioning the price per unit on the black market (selling) is exactly the same for both :/ this doesnt really make sense because as you point out you get WAY more metal than crystals.

Those damn crystals are driving me and the comps down, i say we axe crystal use for units and jack it up for research (err, well okay keep the crystal costs on cruisers and capital ships)

Has anyone else been FORCED to spam scouts early on like me ?

I like how rare crystals are. Arctic Worlds are keypoints, and Sins is the first RTS in which a trade-resources feature is actually used instead of ignored by the vast majority of players.

The amount of crystal will be tweaked in the next patch.

I just think, is it feasible to have multiple colors for crystal? It's CRYSTAL we're talking about here, so only one color ... don't you feel something missing?

I happen to like the fact that one resource is more scares than the other. It makes for some interesting gameplay decisions and really forces the player to think about what they are going to build. It certainly makes ice worlds very valuable. I think it would be interesting though if it were possible that the galaxy be generated in such a way that sometimes metal was the scares resource, or even credits.

is the slot option also being tweaked in the next patch?

e.g.: so that you can build a trade port AND a research station AND a refinery? (4 slots is just not enough! )

I was playing a game the other night where I had actually enough crystal all the time. But I did capture two ice planets 30 minutes into the game, so I'm not sure.

You need to focus on crystal mining and always build crystal extractors first and stuff. I never had to buy crystal the entire game (I even sold it!).

ICE planets is prolly why...

haha. turns out what happened was I got no terran planets at all, but i got two ice planets (one only 2 jumps away, the other 3). the other computer had a whole lot more terran planets tho.

Its not that i want them to increase the amount of crystal gathered, i just want it axed or lowered from many ships, since it is a HUGE pain when making a fleet.

I'm fine with the crystal limitations, as I'm an acute early-expander and I usually get to the terran planets AND the Ice planets first.
but I definately agree that metal is in a way over-abundance. I constantly find myself with way more metal than credits, and I'm quite loath to sell it because I KNOW that the instant I sell it the metal will all dry up and I'll be left wishing I hadnt.

...
hey, why are you spamming the scouts? you should be spamming the cobalt; its far more powerful and hardy than the scout, and not a lot more expensive...

I actually quite like it. It forces you to think more strategically. Just hope you dont end up in a galaxy of 27 planets with 9 other computer players.
