Planetary Defenses

I've been playing for quiet a while and was really wishing for more defenses. So I started thinking and wondered if it would be possible insert a planetary defense upgrade to the planet menu. You upgrade everything now, except for defenses, but it would be great it you could build defense satellites that would attack ships that get too close, like pillagers and siege frigates. It would give you another way to defend your planet from pirate attacks as well as make it a little harder to destroy an opponents planets.

It is only logical that people would never leave their planet in the hands of just a few turrets out in space, something closer would be get. Maybe you could have different stages of planet defense. One could be gauss cannons, the other gauss and missiles, the other something else, like more fighter and bomber generation. It would just give the game another get dynamic. As of now, the planets are really vulnerable.

What do you all think about it?

I go along with Liddell Hart theory that speed and mobility are the cornerstone of military tactics and static defence should never be able to stop a good balanced fleet.

Static defenses are ALWAYS going to be lesser than a good fleet, They can be overun with bombers or taken out from a distance with missle units.

But a bit more variety would be nice, wouldn't yar agree? I'd like things like Missle cannons, Flak turrets and laser beam thingies to place out in space, or heck maybe a fort on an asteroid?

They shouldn't be able to stop a fleet, but it simply be nice to spice things up a bit.

Why not? Gauss cannons suck, they at least need a torpedo counterpart or something.

Hmm maybe tactical warheads launched from the planet itself.

hey ive been reading ur comments and yea maybe instead of orbit focused wepon systems maybe the planet defences shud be ground based, and just maybe there shud be like a 3 tier alert system,I really like any idea like this:)

Liddell Hart wasnt dealing with remotely similar situations...

mobility is nice as a supplement to hard defences when you have a static target for the enemy. but you shouldnt forget raw power (rather use mobility to cover its ass)

I dont think so, I think they are good as are, but the system could use some more fluid adjustments, such as standardized ground defences and a lower tactical cap (right now I'm capable of completely solidifying certain targets to almost beyond scratching with a group of repair stations and a bunch of gauss cannons covered by flak frigs)
