Er, what on Earth is a Swordfish, satthukaraoke? I have been playing this game for months (and was in the beta prior to that, even) and I can't think of any unit with that name...unless you mean the UEF Broadsword T3 Gunship, or some unit from a mod...

Oh yeah, Broadsword, for some reason I keep calling it Swordfish

STRATEGIC ZOOM, which is the most revolutionary RTS idea since the minimap, in my opinion...and really freakin' huge maps!

These things are not exactly news to someone who had played pretty much about any RTS game up to date. Huge map: play Cossack, American conquest series. Strategic Zoom: several RTS already did that especially space combat (Haegemonia spring to mind). Multiple fronts: played Metal Fatigue and the Earth series before, Cossacks also have good multi front battle if you play big enough.

Of course, to its credit Supcom has some interesting combination, but frankly the only element worth mentioning is its huge scale.

I think it is ludicrous to expect Supreme Commander to somehow be balanced at released, or even after several patches. When there are so many units, and such wide, open maps, almost anything can happen...it is also impractical to have one overpowered team (which was the Aeon before version 3251) and one underpowered team (probably Cybran, again, before version 3251).

To be clear, what I'm worry now is that there are too MUCH concern over balance that it's making the distinction between fraction fading. Why? I'm pretty sure using the logic people are using now, then the Core in TA would have to be nerfed to death to achieve a "balance" with the arm. The Core in TA techniquelly takes the arm in, chew it up and spit it out much more comparing to what Aeon did in the beginning, but that's what makes fun.

Like I said, my problem was not with the original game, I was fine with it. What I worry is the direction the developer is taking right now which seem to equalize every fractions, and if this trend continues, it's bye bye for me.

They are balanced, I think, but to make them less common, they are extremely expensive to build...a nuclear missile silo costs about as much as a massive army composed of T3 units, and a missile costs about as much as a...battleship, maybe? All I know is that there are ways to counter nukes (why, anti-nukes, of course! ), so they aren't like some other super weapons in many RTS games (think of Red Alert 2, or Generals, or Company Of Heroes...there are probably many more, too...).

Nukes are humongous in this game. If you were to play at a normal RTS zoom mode, the blast radius would be at least 2 or 3 times larger than your screen, possibly more, depending on the game.

Now I know what you mean, satthukaraoke, but I still think differently than you, lol. I suspect that this new stand-alone will improve things, because it offers the potential for new wacky (but practical) units that vary drastically from side-to-side, and it even introduces a completely new faction (which is hopefully playable in skirmishes/multiplayer). Plus, once you get a few total conversions out there (and the tools with which to make them...*paitence thinning*... ), you can have more radical gameplay forms, etc.

LMAO!! I love how it says USA through out the flight.

Lol that one's great, though I hate how the player can't seem to keep the camera on the explosion very well

There have been on average 30-40 active threads on here EVERY day, so its hard to sometimes keep track of them all....

You're forgetting who you're talking to, nothing happens on the internet without me seeing.

woot! goodbye korea.

speaking of which, is that a real map? because it certainly looks like a mod (and whoever did taht has way too much time on their hands)

I have it, I think it came in a patch, couldn't tell ya which though, there have been a lot.

It is a fan-made map called World Domination (version 2.0). He probably used the unofficial map editor to carefully place the silos down for no cost, and later built the missiles one-by-one, or just used some other modification. Either way, it is a pretty awesome result.

Hang on, I'll find the download.

Voila!

The sheer number of units cannot be effectively replicated in other RTS games. Do you own Supreme Commander, TheGreatEmperor? If you have ever played on big land maps, and you manage your economy effectively, it is not hard to build up small armies in the 100s in just a few minutes...of course, the trouble comes when you have to spend them all in a clash with another army...then, the carnage ensues...

I dont own it, but I have played it, and each time it didnt impress me. On any map that was large you would eventually grind down to spaming high teir units and super units and trying to outmanuever your enemy gained little real tactical advantage(however it did look cool havin small robot dudes drop into the battle). In the end it was dots fighting dots because to manage your armies well you had to zoom out almost all the way. They did do a very nice zoom effect though so I didnt mind it. But it wasnt a game worth getting for me, but I guess that is what I get for being a DOW junky.

lol. I'm having trouble adapting to Company Of Heroes right now, being I'm so used to the strategic zoom feature...

COH > SUPCOM
WWII games have never impressed me, they make a ton of promises, but in the end they are simply the same old same old with better graphics.
Well, Company Of Heroes has awesome graphics, that is quite true...the gameplay is entertaining, to say the least, but it is not truly revolutionary in the RTS market, I believe. It took what a lot of games already had, put in stunning visuals, and perfected the tried-and-true RTS formula.

I am expecting lots of negative comments after me saying that.

COH > SUPCOM

DOW 40K >>> COH

But, we are forgetting one little detail.

...SupCom > Dawn Of War > Company Of Heroes > SupCom > Dawn Of War...

Ahahaha! The infinite loop rages! Wow, I'm getting so off topic...

Oh no, DOW 40K > Supcom.

Hell, at least most of the factions play differently
Reply #45 Top
in feats of pure immersion, I think Supcom wins.

I shall take a photo of my saluting farewell to a nuked force (from atop a mountain far, far away)
C'mon, how many games let you launch dozens of nukes on a whim....SupCom is the best RTS game I've played so far.
Yeah, the scale rocks...but how often do you even have 12 nuclear silos in one multiplayer game? Lots of cool things you can do in the game aren't practical unless you have sandbox mode, and the map editor to spawn enemy units...

Think of it like Lord Of The Rings...you can have two large armies fight each other in the plains outside your base, and just when the 'goodies' are winning, the Mumakil...*cough*Monkeylords...come in and storm through your guys, stepping on them in the process...*fantasizes*

DOW 40K >>> COH

No, no, no.

DOW + COH = DOW 2 = THE GREATEST GAME EVER!!!!
I dunno, I like DOW and stuff but sometimes I feel like the maps are too small.

I'm a casual fan of the series (after I quite Homeworld2 for good). Hope this would be better

original was pretty good, hope they'd improve the gameplay though (quite a few glitches)
